Sylvia and Gerry Anderson: 1999: Encyclopedia II - Space: 1999 - Series Flaws and Criticisms

One of the major criticisms of the show was its scientific accuracy. Generally the writers seemed to have very little understanding of astronomy, which might arguably be useful for a series set in space. (Isaac Asimov was quick to point out that any explosion capable of knocking the Moon out of its orbit would actually blow it apart, and probably send billions of tons of debris crashing down onto Earth as well. Harlan Ellison was also equally quick to point out that any explosion on the far side of the moon capable of knocking it out of its orbit would not send it hurtlin ...

Sylvia and Gerry Anderson: 1999: Encyclopedia II - Space: 1999 - Motion picture releases

Four films were culled together from various episodes of the series in the 1970s and 1980s. One aim was to provide content for new US and European Cable TV and Satellite TV stations (and, potentially, for theatrical release which occurred in several European countries). A fifth film, Spazio: 1999, was created specifically for theatrical release in Italy. These films (with the exception of Spazio: 1999) were released to home video years before any episodes were officially available in that format. Spazio: 1999See also:

Sylvia and Gerry Anderson: Encyclopedia II - Captain Scarlet - Puppets

Whether the puppets of the various Anderson series were modelled on real people, and who those real people were, is the subject of some question. Gerry and Sylvia Anderson have claimed that they asked the puppet designers to give the puppets rough resemblances to specific celebrities of the day. Some of the puppets, however, appear to be quite clearly modelled instead on the actors who provided their voices; chief puppet artist Mary Turner admitted that Thunderbirds' Lady Penelope was modelled after Sylvia, a revelation the latter cla ...

Sylvia and Gerry Anderson: Encyclopedia II - Tokusatsu - The Legacy of Eiji Tsuburaya

Eiji Tsuburaya (1901-1970) is perhaps the most famous tokusatsu kantoku in Japan, and is responsible for bringing the famous characters Godzilla and Ultraman to life. While he wasn't the first FX artist, he fought to make special effects in Japanese cinema truly special. When doing movies and TV shows involving giants (be it monsters, superheroes, aliens, etc.), Eiji's techniques usually involve expert miniature work, and the monster is usually either a stuntman in a full monster costume (a process later dubbed "Suitmation") or a mari ...

Sylvia and Gerry Anderson: Encyclopedia II - Tokusatsu - Suitmation technology

Suitmation (スーツメーション) is the term used in Japan to describe the process in tokusatsu movies & TV used to portray a monster using suit acting. It is not known exactly where the term originated from; Some people in Japan (possibly staff members at Toho) coined the term to differentiate the suit work from Ray Harryhausen's celebrated Dynamation (stop-motion) technique. The term was at least used to promote the Godzilla suit from The Return of Godzilla. < ...

Sylvia and Gerry Anderson: Encyclopedia II - 21 number - In human affairs: age 21

21 had been the age of majority in England and Wales before that age was lowered to 18 with the coming into force, on 1 January 1970, of the Family Law Reform Act 1969. In the United States, 21 is the minimum legal age requred to drink alcohol. It is also the age at which it is legal to gamble and have sex with a prostitute in Nevada. In most states, a person who is 21 or over may also rent a car. 21 was the age for voting in the majority of states ...

Two mad scientists, Dr. Clayton Forrester, played by Trace Beaulieu, and his sidekick Dr. Laurence Erhardt, played by Josh Weinstein, launch Joel Robinson (Hodgson), a janitor working for the Gizmonics Institute, into space and force him to watch truly horrible B-movies. They do this in order to measure how much bad movie-making it takes to drive a person crazy, and to pinpoint the perfect B-movie to use as a weapon in Dr. Forrester's scheme of world domination. (The sycophantic TV's Frank, played by Frank Conniff, replaced Dr. Erhardt in the second season pr ...

Sylvia and Gerry Anderson: Encyclopedia II - Tokusatsu - Famous Tokusatsu Monsters and Superheroes

Whereas Godzilla has become a worlwide household name, Ultraman and Kamen Rider are considered the two greatest influential model Japanese superheroes to this very day. All three characters have created countless sequels and imitations, few of which rival their popularity (the Sentai Series, for example, is an offshoot of the Henshin Hero genre started by Kamen Rider). Metal Heroes (specifically Space Sheriffs) became a basis for the RoboCop movies. Toho and Daiei are well known companies in the Daikaiju category of tokusatsu. ...

Sylvia and Gerry Anderson: Encyclopedia II - Tokusatsu - Japanese Fan Films

As pop-culture fandom in Japan grew and grew in the 1980s, a fan-based group called Daicon Film, now called Gainax, was formed by Hideaki Anno, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Takami Akai, and Shinji Higuchi. Besides their celebrated anime sequences, they also produced a series of tokusatsu shorts, usually parodies of monster movies and superhero shows, which have gotten lots of favorable media coverage. These productions included Patriotic Task Force Dai-Nippon (1983), Swift Hero Noutenki (1982), Return of Ultraman (1983) and The Eight-Headed Giant Serpent ...

Sylvia and Gerry Anderson: 1999: Encyclopedia II - Space: 1999 - The Basic Plot

The show involved the plight of the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha following a calamity on September 13, 1999. When a huge nuclear waste dump on the far side of the Moon detonates in a massive series of nuclear explosions, it sends the Moon hurtling out of Earth's orbit and into deep space at colossal speed. The Moon in effect becomes the "spaceship" on which our heroes travel, looking for a new home. A "space warp" conveniently serves to explain how it is the Alphans manage to meet so many alien civilizations instead of spending most of their time driftin ...

The rights of the show were sold to ITC Entertainment, Lew Grade's production company which co-produced all the Anderson shows from Thunderbirds onwards. The tokusatsu technique has been copied around the world, thanks to the popularity of Godzilla films. One could say that this is the highest form of flattery. Tokusatsu - Famous Examples. In 1961, England made its own Godzilla-style film, Gorgo, which used the same "suitmation" technique as the Godzilla films. That same year, Saga Studios in Denmark made another Godzilla-style giant monster film, Reptilicus. This film's monster was brought to life using a marionette on a miniat ...

Sylvia and Gerry Anderson: Encyclopedia II - Tokusatsu - Confusion of the term outside Japan

There is currently a misconception in countries outside Japan (including the United States, to an extent) that the term tokusatsu refers mainly to Japanese superhero TV shows (including - but not limited to - the Ultra Series, Kamen Rider Series and Super Sentai Series). Of course, this is not true, as the term has always been used in its native country to describe Japanese live-action special effects ...

Sylvia and Gerry Anderson: 1999: Encyclopedia II - Space: 1999 - Concepts And Plot Points

The concept of travelling through space encountering aliens and strange worlds is similar to Star Trek and Lost In Space, although the crew were obviously more influenced by 2001: A Space Odyssey (except in terms of scientific accuracy). The latter, in fact, was dictated by the Andersons and series financer Lew Grade, which explained the series' look-and-feel of the Stanley Kubrick classic. Th ...
