The original provincial regiments (landskapsregementen) were raised by splitting the old grand regiments, forming 20 infantry (actually 21 as Smålands regemente was split into Kronobergs and Jönköpings regemente) and eight cavalry regiments as written in the Swedish constitution of 1634. The first building on this site was a fortress with a core tower built in the 13th century by Birger Jarl to defend Lake Mälaren. Carl Gustaf was the youngest of five children and the only son of Sweden's Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla. His father's death in an airplane crash outside Copenhagen, Denmark on January 26, 1947 left the nine-month-old Carl Gustaf second in line for the throne, behind his grandfather, Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf.
