Swan Song Records: Encyclopedia - Presence

Q review (3/5) link Presence is a studio album by Led Zeppelin, released by Swan Song Records on March 31, 1976. This album was conceived after Robert Plant sustained serious injuries from a car accident on Rhodes, Greece, August 5, 1975 which postponed a planned 1975/76 world tour by Led Zeppelin. During his convalescent period in Malibu, California, Plant with Jimmy Page, had written enough material for rehearsals to begin at Hollywood's SIR Studio. The album was recorded within three weeks a ...

Swan Song Records: Encyclopedia II - Stairway to Heaven - History

The band began to write the song during the sessions for Led Zeppelin III at Bron-Yr-Aur, Wales, but it was completed at Headley Grange, Hampshire, and finally recorded at Island Studios, London, in December 1970. It is not entirely clear whether a movie title was an inspiration for the song or the title. The song was first played live at Belfast's Ulster Hall on March 5, 1971 and it was performed at every subsequent Led Zeppelin concert from 1975 to 1980, usually as part of a final encore. "Stairway" was also played at Live Aid in 1985 and the 40th anniversary celebration of Atlantic Records in 1988, and by Jimmy Page ...

Swan Song Records: Encyclopedia II - Stairway to Heaven - Cover versions

Although the song is a popular set choice for cover bands throughout the world, the iconic status and unique structure of the song have precluded the recording of many cover versions by established artists. A few attempts at a straightforward cover have been made over the years, notably by hair metal band Great White. German producer Frank Farian formed the "supergroup" Far Corporation which was the first act to chart with a single release of the song, barely making the charts in the U.S., while becoming a top-10 hit in the UK, reaching numb ...

Swan Song Records: Encyclopedia II - Peter Grant - The Led Zeppelin Era

It was in late 1966 that Simon Napier-Bell asked Grant to take over management of The Yardbirds, who were constantly touring yet struggling financially. Producer Mickie Most had suggested to Napier-Bell that his friend Peter Grant would be an asset to The Yardbirds, but as it eventuated, his arrival was too late to save the band. The experience however did give him ideas, which were put to good use later with Led Zeppelin. Grant's no-nonsense approach to promoters and persuasive presence was influential in The Yardbirds making money from its ...

Swan Song Records: Encyclopedia II - Stairway to Heaven - Music

The song is a multi-movement suite. A quiet introduction featuring acoustic guitar and recorder gradually moves into to a slow electric middle section, before the faster hard rock final section. This style is found in many Zeppelin songs recorded after Stairway to Heaven's release. The guitar part opens with an Am-Fmaj7 chord progression with a chromatic descending bassline A-G#-G-F#-F. John Paul Jones contributed overdubbed wooden bass recorders in the opening section (he used an Organ, and later, a Mellotron to synthesize this arran ...

Swan Song Records: Encyclopedia II - Stairway to Heaven - Controversy

Critics of rock and roll songs (and of Led Zeppelin in particular) have alleged that a backward message is recorded into "Stairway to Heaven." If a portion of the song is played backwards, then supposedly words beginning with "Oh, here's to my sweet Satan" can be heard [1]. Christian fundamentalists and others have interpreted different lyrics from the allegedly-backmasked portion, which most agree to be the lines beginning with "If there's a bustle in your hedgerow...". The theory was primarily advanced by Michael Mills, Jacob Aranza, and Jeff Godwin, sometimes offering detailed analyses of the hidden m ...

Between 1958 and 1963, Grant appeared on a number of movies including A Night to Remember (as a crew member on the Titanic), The Guns of Navarone (a British commando), Cleopatra (a palace guard), and television shows The Saint, Crackerjack, Dixon of Dock Green, and The Benny Hill Show. He was also Robert Morley's double on many of that actor's films. The money he made from these ventures was invested in his own entertainment transport business. As the acting roles dried up, Grant made more mon ...

Swan Song Records: Encyclopedia II - Peter Grant - Church Eulogy

By Alan Callan Dear Helen, dear Warren, today you have conferred upon me a great honour by asking me to speak of your Father, Peter. The honour though is so challenging that the prospect fills me with fear. To begin to do justice to the life of Peter Grant by speaking on a single occasion, may prove to be beyond my abilities. . . please forgive me as I try. The greatness of his life was to see him amongst his peers and witness the love that was given him so freely, the greatness of his life was to experience the friendship that he gav ...
