| | | | | | supermarkets: Encyclopedia II - Filling station - Service stationsIn the US, a filling station that also offers such services as oil change and mechanical repairs to automobiles is called a service station. Until the 1970s the vast majority of gas stations were service stations; now only a minority are. This kind of business provided the name for the U.S. comic strip Gasoline Alley, where a number of the characters worked.
In the UK, a 'service station' refers to much larger facilities, usually attached to motorways (see Motorway service area (UK)) or major trunk routes, which provide ...

Filling station - Payment methods.
In small towns and rural areas, gas stations generally allow customers to pump gas first and pay afterwards. Due to the higher incidence of crime in large urban areas (especially driving away without paying), customers must generally pay first and then pump fuel.
Modern gas stations have pay-at-the-pump capabilities – in most cases credit, debit and ATM cards are normally accepted. At some stations, cash is also taken at the pump, although change must be collected by going to a cashier window which is often bulletpro ...

| | | | supermarkets: Encyclopedia II - Arcade game - Game designArcade games often have very short levels, simple, easy to grasp controllers, iconic characters, and rapidly increasing difficulty. They are designed as quick bursts of adrenaline-fueled thrills, as opposed to most console games, which feature more in-depth gameplay, and stronger storylines. This is due to being coin-operated, where you are essentially renting the game for as long as your game avatar can stay alive. Games on consoles or the PC can be refered to as an "arcade game" if it shares these qualities, o ...

The accounts include profits both before and after partnership bonuses. While the partnership bonus takes the place of the dividend which might be paid if John Lewis was a limited company, on the basis of the tax charges disclosed in the accounts, it appears that most or all of it is accepted as tax deductible remuneration by the Inland Revenue. Profit figures before and after the partnership bonus are both shown, but arguably neither of ...

| | | | supermarkets: Encyclopedia II - Filling station - Differences in fuel dispensersIn Europe, the customer selects one of several color coded nozzles depending on the type of fuel required. The filler pipe of unleaded fuel is smaller than the one for leaded (substitute) ones. The tank filler opening has a corresponding diameter. This is to prevent filling the tank with the wrong fuel. | | | | supermarkets: Encyclopedia II - Filling station - Smoking static electricity and mobile phone useIt is forbidden to use open flame and, in some places, a mobile phone on the forecourt of a gas station. This is because of the risk of igniting gasoline vapor. The safety issue with mobile phones, however, is disputed. | | | | supermarkets: Encyclopedia II - Government-business relations in Japan - Small BusinessJapan's streets are lined with small shops, grocery stores, restaurants, and coffeehouses. Although supermarkets and large discount department stores are more common than in the 1980s, the political muscle of small business associations was reflected in the success with which they blocked the rationalization of the country's distribution system. The Large-Scale Retail Store Law of 1973, amended in 1978, made it very difficult in the late 1980s for either Japanese or foreign retailers ...
