Many suicidal people participate in suicidal activities which do not result in death. These activities fall under the designation attempted suicide or parasuicide. | | | Suicide: Encyclopedia II - Harold Shipman - SuicideShipman was found hanged in his cell at 6:20 a.m. on January 13, 2004, on the eve of his 58th birthday, and was pronounced dead at 8:10 a.m. A Prison Service statement indicated that Shipman had hanged himself from the bars of his cell, using bed sheets. Some British tabloids celebrated his suicide and encouraged other serial killers to follow his example. However, the victims' families said they felt "cheated" [4], as his suicide meant that they would never have the satisfaction of Shipman's confession, and answers as to why he had committe ...

Bloor Street Viaduct - A magnet for suicide.
The Prince Edward Viaduct became a magnet for suicide. People could easily jump down off the bridge, as the railings were relatively small and easy to scale; to date, there have been over 400 suicides. This not only posed a risk to the health of the jumpers, but also to the traffic underneath, which were in danger of being hit by a jumper.
With over 400 suicides, the Viaduct second only to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. A 1997 report from the Schizo ...

 | | | Suicide: Hindu view on suicideHinduism and suicide: Hindu view on suicide Hinduism does not approve suicide. Hindus believe that human life is very precious, which is attainted after after hundreds and thousands of births and provides an unique opportunity to each individual to make a quantum jump into higher planes of existence or attain immortality. Even gods and other celestial beings do not have this opportunity unless they come down to earth and take birth as human beings. Read more here: » Hinduism

 | | | Suicide:
Hindu -
Hinduism Dictionary on Suicide suicide: "Self-killing." In Sanskrit, pranatyaga, "abandoning life force." Intentionally ending one's own life through poisoning, drowning, burning, jumping, shooting, etc. Suicide has traditionally been condemned in Hindu scripture because, being an abrupt escape from life, it creates unseemly karma to face in the future. However, in cases of terminal disease or great disability, religious self-willed death through fasting - prayopavesha - is permitted. The person making such a decision declares it publicly, which allows for community regulation and distinguishes the act from suicide performed privately in traumatic emotional states of anguish and despair. Ancient lawgivers cite various stipulations: 1) inability to perform normal bodily purification; 2) death appears imminent or the condition is so bad that life's pleasures are nil; 3) the action must be done under community regulation. The gradual nature of prayopavesha is a key factor distinguishing it from sudden suicide, svadehaghata ("murdering one's body"), for it allows time for the individual to settle all differences with others, to ponder life and draw close to God, as well as for loved ones to oversee the person's gradual exit from the physical world. In the ideal, highly ritualized practice, one begins by obtaining forgiveness and giving forgiveness. Next a formal vow, mahavrata-marana, "great vow of death," is given to one's guru, following a full discussion of all karmas of this life, especially fully and openly confessing one's wrongdoings. Thereafter, attention is to be focused on scripture and the guru's noble teachings. Meditation on the innermost, immortal Self becomes the full focus as one gradually abstains from food. At the very end, as the soul releases itself from the body, the sacred mantra is repeated as instructed by the preceptor. See: death, penance, reincarnation, soul, prayopavesha. | | | Suicide: Encyclopedia II - History of suicide - MilitaryIn ancient times, suicide sometimes followed defeat in battle, to avoid capture and possible subsequent torture, mutilation, or enslavement by the enemy. The Caesarean assassins Brutus and Cassius, for example, killed themselves after their defeat at the battle of Philippi. Insurgent Jews died in a mass suicide at Masada in 74 CE rather than face enslavement by the Romans.
In Roman society, suicide was an accepted means by which honor could be preserved. Those charged with capital crimes, for example, could prevent confiscation of the ...

Cult suicide - Peoples Temple Jim Jones.
In 1978, 914 American followers of Jim Jones died in a mass murder/suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. The dead included 274 children. Alternative theories allege that most of the victims were unwillingly injected with the poison, and some even allege involvement of the CIA. However, an affadavit made by former member Deborah Layton days before the massacre testified to suicide drills called white nights in which members practiced mass suicide by ingesting poison, and in ...

Cult suicide - The Family International.
A less widespread suspicion indicates that The Family International, previously called The Children of God, encourages suicide despite its official rejection of actions like euthanasia. However the Beliefs of the Children of God emphasizes an imminent Second Coming and some deem this a negative sign with regards to suicidal behavior. Also the religion recently gained renewed attention due to the murder-suicide of Ricky Rodriguez. Mr. Rodriguez was a former member, but this ...
