Subdivisions of Scotland: Encyclopedia II - Scottish Assembly - History

A devolved Scottish Assembly that would have some form of legislative powers in jurisdiction over Scotland was a long-held political priority for many individuals and organisations. The drive for home rule first took concrete shape in the nineteenth century, as demands for it in Ireland were met with similar (although not as widespread) demands in Scotland. Scottish Assembly - 19th Century. In 1853 the National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights was established. This body was close t ...

Scottish Parliament - Constitution and powers. Parliament was reconstituted as a body that deals with matters that have been devolved to it by the UK Parliament. The Scottish Parliament has the power to pass laws and has limited tax-varying capability. Another of its jobs is to hold the Scottish Executive to account. The "devolved matters" over which it has responsibility include education, health, agriculture, and justice. A degree of domestic authority, and all fore ...

Subdivisions of Scotland: Encyclopedia II - Local government of Scotland - History

Between 1930 and 1975 local government in Scotland was organised on the administrative county system (including four counties of cities), with subdivisions based on large burghs, small burghs and parishes. The four cities and the burghs had their own councils. Parish councils were abolished in 1930, under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929, and then people who lived in a parish which was not a burgh only had representation at county level. In 1975, the Conservative government of Edward Heath introduced a system of ...

It is believed that the first group of humans in Scotland appeared around 8,000 years ago. A group of permanent settlers began building villages on Scottish soil around 6,000 years ago. Subdivisions of Scotland: Encyclopedia II - Dunfermline and West Fife by-election 2006 - Campaign

The Courier reported on January 23 that leaked minutes of a meeting on January 11 at Westminster revealed that "senior Scottish Liberal Democrats do not believe their party has any chance of winning the Dunfermline and West Fife by-election", and that "their aim is to beat the SNP rather than topple Labour". This suggestion was backed up on January 27 by a poll in the Daily Telegraph that put the Lib Dems at 13% UK-wide (down 10% ...

Subdivisions of Scotland: Encyclopedia II - Scotland referendum 1979 - Results

The referendum was held on March 1, 1979. The result was a narrow majority in favour of devolution. However, because of the low turnout the percentage of the electorate that voted yes was less than 40%, so the condition in the Act was not met. The electorate were asked to vote yes or no: 'Do you want the provisions of the Scotland Act to be put into effect?' Even though the majority voted Yes, the government rejected the referendum because the condition that 40% of the electorate should vote Yes was not met. The Scotl ...

Subdivisions of Scotland: Encyclopedia II - Wigtown - History

Wigtown was made a royal burgh in 1469 although a settlement here existed long before this. The burgh is mentioned in an indenture of 1292, and the fact that the sheriffdom was in existence at the time of the Larges campaign of 1263 suggests that the burgh may also have been recognised as such during the reign of Alexander III. The royal burgh was granted to Sir Malcom Fleming by David II in 1341. Wigtown later passed to the Earls of Douglas and was restored to its former tenure as a royal burgh as a result of the forfeiture of the Do ...

Subdivisions of Scotland: Encyclopedia II - Sewel motion - Background

The Scotland Act 1998 devolved many issues relating to legislation for Scotland to the Scottish Parliament. The UK Parliament maintains Parliamentary sovereignty and may legislate on any issue relating to the United Kingdom, with or without the permission of the devolved assemblies and parliaments. However, this could present a potential conflict between the different legislatures. The motions are named after Lord Sewel, then a minister in the Scottish Office, who announced the policy in the House of Lords during the passage of the Sc ...

Subdivisions of Scotland: Encyclopedia II - Dunfermline - History

The history of Dunfermline goes back to a remote period, for the Culdees had an establishment here. The name comes from Dùn Phàrlain, which may mean either, "The Fort of Partholan" or "Fort of the crooked Glen" in Gaelic. It is not known who the exact Partholan was, but there was a hero of the name, sometimes referred to as "The Celtic Atlas". It is also the basis of the surname "MacFarlane" (MacPhàrlain). The town's increased fame and prosperity date from the marriage of Malcolm Canmore and his queen Margaret, which took pl ...

Subdivisions of Scotland: Encyclopedia II - Sewel motion - Use and application

There are two uses for a Sewel motion: It is used when the UK Parliament is considering legislation extending only (or having provisions extending only) to England and Wales, and the Scottish Parliament, being in agreement with those provisions, wishes for the UK Parliament to extend them to Scotland. This saves the need for separate, similar legislation to be passed by the Scottish Parliament. It is also used when Westminster is considering legislation applying to Scotland but which relates to both devolved and reserved matters, where it would otherwise be necessary for the Scottish Pa ...

Wigtown lies less than a mile from the town of Bladnoch, a village with a distillery producing malt whisky of the same name. The river Bladnoch can be fished for salmon and has historically been well known as one of Scotland's finest rivers producing Spring fish. The river Bladnoch meets the river Cree in Wigtown Bay, meandering through a large area of salt marsh which has been designated as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR). Wigtown Bay is the largest LNR in Britain, and is home to a wealth of wildlife (particularly birds). Some people come to a ...
