Stress Release: Encyclopedia II - Fracture mechanics - Griffith's Crack Theory: Strain Energy Release Rate G
Fracture Mechanics was invented during World War I by English aeronautical engineer, A.A.Griffith, to explain the failure of brittle materials. Griffith was faced with the problem that theoretical calculations showed that the stress at the tip of a sharp crack approaches infinity. Accordingly, any structure containing a crack should fail, no matter how small the crack or how light the load. To solve this dilemma, Griffith developed a thermodynamic approach. He assumed that growth of a crack requires creation of surface energy, which is suppl ...

Stress Release: Encyclopedia II - Fracture mechanics - Griffith's Crack Theory: Stress Intensity Factor K

Griffith’s work was ignored for over twenty years until a group under G.R. Irwin at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory took it up during World War II. Their problem was that naval materials, e.g. ship-plate steel, are not perfectly elastic but undergo plastic deformation at the tip of a crack. Eventually a modification of Griffith’s theory emerged from this work; a term called stress intensity replaced strain energy release rate and a term called fracture toughness replaced surface energy. Both of these terms are simply related to the energy terms that Griffith used:

Stress Release: The Supreme Refuge

Buddhist Quotes: The Supreme Refuge

They go to many a refuge,

 To mountains, forests,

 Parks, trees, & shrines:

 People threatened with danger.

 That's not the secure refuge,

 Not the supreme refuge,

 That's not the refuge,

 Having gone to which

 You gain release

 From all suffering & stress.

- Dhammapada, 14, translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.

Stress Release: Understanding Meditation

Much of the world today confuses meditation with a lot many exercises that are geared to relaxing the mind or releasing stress. Meditation is not music therapy and nor is it rhythmical dancing, though these can and do have their own inherent benefits.

Simply put, as Paramahansa Yogananda described it, "meditation really is a scientific technique of concentration on God." And while there are paths and ways that take you into the sublime lake of meditation, once you get into it, meditation really can be the one golden Light that will dissolve the darkness of incarnations.

Stress Release: Meditation - a Stress Buster

Meditation serves as a medicine for stress and provides sound mental health.

Stress can create havoc in our lives as it can lead to mental and heart ailments. In order to deal with it scientifically and practically, we must first identify the various factors that cause stress.

Swami Vishvas Ji explains: "Stress is a mismanagement of time! When we spend too much time in the past or future, it steals away our lovely present moments. A preoccupied mind can never be at rest. Traveling into the past or future can help us learn from past mistakes or set goals and visions for the future. But if we make the past or future our permanent home - the problem begins!

Stress Release: Dharma In Other Religions

All other religions also lay stress on Dharma. Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Islam are all remarkably alive to its value. Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Kant, Swedenborg and Spinoza are all striking examples in the interesting history of Western philosophy for the high pedestal on which they have placed morality, duty and righteousness, and adored them all as the only means to the attainment of the goal of life. Each religion lays greater stress on certain aspects of Dharma.

Stress Release: Encyclopedia - Corticotropin-releasing hormone

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), also called corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) or corticoliberin, is a polypeptide hormone involved in the stress response. It is produced by the hypothalamus and stimulates corticotropic cells of the anterior lobe of the pituitary to produce ACTH and other biologically active substances (for example β-endorphin). CRH is also synthes ...

Stress Release: Encyclopedia - Myofascial Release

Myofascial release refers to the manual technique for stretching the fascia with the aim to balance the body. Fascia is located between the skin and the underlying structure of muscle and bone, it is a seamless web of connective tissue that covers and connects the muscles, organs, and skeletal structures in our body. Muscle and fascia are united forming the myofascia system. Injuries, stress, trauma, and poor posture can cause restriction to fascia. Since fascia is an interconnected web, the restriction or tightness to fascia a ...

Stress Release: Encyclopedia - Coral bleaching

Coral bleaching results when the symbiotic zooxanthellae (single-celled algae) are released from the original host coral organism due to stress. The corals that form the structure of the great reef ecosystems of tropical seas depend on these symbiotic photosynthesizing unicellular algae called "zooxanthellae" that live within their tissues. When the zooxantheallae are expelled, the coral loses its pigment, leading to a bleached or completely white appeara ...

Stress Release: Encyclopedia - Corticosteroid

In physiology, corticosteroids are a class of steroid hormones that are produced in the adrenal cortex. Corticosteroids are involved in a wide range of physiologic systems such as stress response, immune response and regulation of inflammation, carbohydrate metabolism, protein catabolism, blood electrolyte levels, and behavior. Glucocorticoids such as cortisol control carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism and are anti-inflammatory by preventing phospholipid release, decreasing eosinophil action and a number of o ...

Stress Release: Encyclopedia - Darkness on the Edge of Town

Darkness on the Edge of Town is a rock album by Bruce Springsteen, released in 1978 (see 1978 in music). Recovering from legal troubles and the stress of the breakthrough success of Born to Run, Springsteen released a defiantly anti-commercial album, Darkness on the Edge of Town. Sales were not as high as Born to Run, but the album still did better than was expected. The extroverted optimism which was a hallmark of Born to Run was absent with a vengeance from Darkness o ...

Stress Release: Encyclopedia - Earthquake

An earthquake is a sudden and sometimes catastrophic movement of a part of the Earth's surface. Earthquakes result from the dynamic release of elastic strain energy that radiates seismic waves. Earthquakes typically result from the movement of faults, planar zones of deformation within the Earth's upper crust. The word earthquake is also widely used to indicate the source region itself. The Earth's lithosphere is a patch work of plates in slow but constant motion (see plate tectonics). Earthquakes occur where the stress resulting from ...

Stress Release: Encyclopedia - Acute stress reaction

Acute stress reaction is a psychological condition arising in response to a terrifying event. "Acute Stress Response", was first described by Walter Cannon in the 1920s as a theory that animals react to threats with a general discharge of the sympathetic nervous system. The response was later recognized as the first stage of a general adaptation syndrome that regulates stress responses among vertebrates and other organisms. The onset of a stress response is associated with specific physiological actions in the sympatheti ...

Stress Release: Encyclopedia - Tension

Tension may mean: In physics, tension is a force on a body directed to produce strain (extension); it can be considered to be negative compression. It is measured in according units (newton, dynes, pounds-force, etc). Tension is the dominant static force acting on such objects as a vibrating string or a stretched rubber band. Hooke's law states the relation between the stress on an object and the resultant increase in its length. The modulus of elasticity of a spring or elastic string can be use ...
