Stress (physics): Encyclopedia II - Emotional detachment - First sense: inability to connect

Emotional detachment in the first sense above often arises from psychological trauma and is a component in many anxiety and stress disorders. The person, while physically present, moves elsewhere in the mind, and in a sense is "not entirely present", making them sometimes be seen as preoccupied or distracted. Still, it is often not as outwardly obvious as other psychiatric symptoms; people with this problem often have emotional systems that are in overdrive. They have a hard time being a loving family member. They avoid activities, pl ...

Stress (physics): Encyclopedia II - Panic attack - Causes

Panic disorder has been found to run in families, and this may mean that inheritance plays a strong role in determining who will get it. However, many people who have no family history of the disorder develop it. Heredity, other biological factors, stressful life events, and thinking in a way that exaggerates relatively normal bodily reactions are all believed to play a role in the onset of panic disorder. Often the first attacks are triggered by physical illnesses, a major life stress, or certain medications. PTSD patients also show ...

Stress (physics): Encyclopedia II - Essential tremor - Symptoms

Essential tremor (ET) generally presents as a rhythmic tremor (4-12 Hz) that is present only when the affected muscle is exerting effort (i.e., it is not present at rest). Any sort of physical or mental stress will tend to make the tremor worse, often creating the false impression that the tremor is of somatic origin. It is typical for the tremor to worsen in "performance" situations, such as when making out a check at a checkout stand. This is due to the increased stress in such situations. ...

Stress (physics): Massage Bodywork Dictionary on BIOENERGY

BIOENERGY

Developed and taught by Polish healer Mietek Wirkus, bioenergy is a form of energy healing. The therapist uses a combination of noninvasive, light physical touch with manipulation and repatterning of the higher energy bodies and chakras using only the hands. The objectives are release of physical symptoms associated with disease and stimulation of the relaxation response to relieve stress and tension.

Stress (physics): Encyclopedia II - Endurance - Endurance exercise

Endurance exercise consists of performing low- to medium-intensity exercise for very long periods of time. E.g., jogging or running several miles to hundreds of miles; cycling dozens of miles to thousands of miles; swimming hundreds of yards to dozens of miles. Physical endurance is differentiated from other forms of physical stress in that in endurance exercise fatigue of the muscles and cardiovascular system do not force the effort to end. The need for sleep, the buildup of non-recyclable waste chemicals, the depletion of convertibl ...

Stress (physics): Encyclopedia II - Betrayal - Betrayal trauma

Betrayal trauma occurs when people or institutions that are depended on for survival violate human trust. An example of betrayal trauma is childhood physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. The term was first used by Professor J.J. Freyd in 1991, and today most mental health professionals accept betrayal trauma as a possible alternative diagnosis to traditional post traumatic stress disorder. [Prof J.J. Stress (physics): New Age Spiritual Dictionary on Solar plexus chakra

solar plexus chakra The third chakra, located just above the navel, is the center of intuition, emotion and power. This chakra influences the adrenal glands profoundly affecting the sympathetic nervous system, muscular energy, circulation, heartbeat, digestion, and mood. Excessive use and over-abuse of adrenaline due to constant stress produces various physical and psychological symptoms including ulcers, nervous disorders and chronic fatigue. The symbolic form of this center is a circle and its color is yellow.

Stress (physics): Encyclopedia II - Glycemia - Physiological regulation

Glycemia is controlled by several physiological processes. It tends to fluctuate to higher levels after meals, due to the gastric and intestinal absorption of carbohydrates of low molecular weight present in the diet or broken down from other kinds of foodstuffs, such as starches (polysaccharides); and to lower levels with usage by cell metabolism, particularly after stress, temperature regulation and physical exhertion. Another input to glycemia levels is neoglucogenesis, whereby glycogen stored in the liver and skeletal muscles, or aminoac ...

Stress (physics): Encyclopedia II - Facial symmetry - Health and physical attractiveness

It has been proposed that facial bilateral symmetry is a universal determinant of health and therefore of beauty. Facial asymmetries and minor physical anomalies begin to appear early in embryonic development, mainly the first trimester of pregnancy, and can be a sign of instability during this growth. Fluctuating asymmetry (random differences between two sides, as opposed to the deliberate natural asymmetry in some animals) develop throughout the lifespan of the individual and is a sign of the phenotype being subjected to some levels of stress. The ability to co ...

Stress (physics): Encyclopedia II - Tachycardia - Autonomic and endocrine causes

An increase in sympathetic nervous system stimulation causes the heart rate to increase, both by the direct action of sympathetic nerve fibers on the heart, and by causing the endocrine system to release hormones such as epinephrine (adrenaline) which have a similar effect. Increased sympathetic stimulation is usually due to physical or psychological stress (the so-called "fight or flight" response), but can also be induced by stimulants such as amphetamines. Endocrine disorders such as pheochromocytoma can cause epinephr ...

Stress (physics): Holistic Health Therapy Dictionary on Sports massage

Sports massage

The prime purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body's soft tissues during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse, massage can break them down quickly and effectively. Above all, it can help prevent those niggling injuries that so often get in the way of performance and achievement, whether one is an athlete, ardent keep-fitter or a once a week jogger.

This treatment is not just for the sports person: anyone can benefit from sports massage, including people in physically demanding jobs and those not quite so obvious (occupational, emotional and postural stress may produce many similar characteristics to sports injuries).

Sports massage tends to be deeper and more intense. It is based on the various elements of Swedish massage and often incorporates a combination of other techniques involving stretching, compression, friction, toning, and trigger point response techniques similar to Acupressure and Shiatsu. The skilled therapist brings together this blend of techniques, knowledge and advice during treatment, to work effectively with the client to bring about optimum performance and to provide injury-free training and minimise post event injuries.

Stress (physics): Holistic Health Therapy Dictionary on Alexander technique

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE: F. Matthias Alexander created the method after concluding that bad posture was responsible for his own chronic voice loss.

Practitioners use gentle hands-on guidance, verbal instruction, teach simple, efficient ways of moving as a means of improving balance, posture, coordination and to relieve tension and pain.

Besides increasing the physical and psychological performances, this method of psychomotor rehabilitation brings a durable relief to back pain and to the numerous illness bound related to the posture. Its first objective is to change the stereotyped habits. Its addresses those who suffer from stress and from chronic pain, but also to the pregnant women who feel motor difficulties.

Stress (physics): Encyclopedia II - Exact solutions in general relativity - Types of exact solution

Many well-known exact solutions belong to one of several types, depending upon the intended physical interpretation of the stress-energy tensor: vacuum solutions: Tab = 0; these describe regions in which no matter or nongravitational fields are present, electrovacuum solutions: Tab must arise entirely from an electromagnetic field which solves the source-free Maxwell equation ...

Stress (physics): Encyclopedia II - Sunspot - Physics

Although the details of sunspot generation are still somewhat a matter of research, it is quite clear that sunspots are the visible counterparts of magnetic flux tubes in the convective zone of the sun that get "wound up" by differential rotation. If the stress on the flux tubes reaches a certain limit, they curl up quite like a rubber band and puncture the sun's surface. At the puncture points convection is inhibited, the energy flux from the sun's interior decreases, and with it the surface temperature. The Wilson effect tells us that sunspots are actuall ...

Stress (physics): Encyclopedia II - Aikido - Body

Aikido training is for all-around physical fitness, flexibility, and relaxation. The human body in general can exert power in two ways: contractive and expansive (aikidofaq.com). Many fitness activities, for example weight-lifting, emphasize the former, which means that specific muscles or muscle groups are isolated and worked to improve tone, mass, and power. The disadvantage of this, however, is that whole body movement and coordination are rarely stressed. Thus, while muscle size and power may increase, there is no emphasis on the ways in ...
