Sly Stone - Early career. Sylvester Stewart was the second of five children. After the family moved from Dallas, Texas to Vallejo, California (near San Francisco), he and his brother Freddie and their sisters Rose and Vaetta formed "The Stewart Four" as children, performing gospel music in the Church of God in Christ and even recording a single in 1952. All of the Stewart children except oldest sister Loretta would later adopt the surname "Stone" and become ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Rolling Stone - History

It was founded in San Francisco in 1967 by Jann Wenner (who is still editor and publisher) and music critic Ralph J. Gleason. Initially the magazine identified with and reported on the hippie counterculture, though it distanced itself from the underground newspapers of the time, embracing more traditional journalistic standards and avoiding the radical politics of the underground press. Rolling Stone did make a mark for its political coverage in the early 1970s, however, through the unique "gonzo journalism" of Hunter S. Thompson. The magazine also helped launch the careers of Cameron Crowe, ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Stone Age - Human development during the Stone Age

The Stone Age covers an immense time span, and during this period major climatic and other changes occurred, which affected the evolution of humans. Humans themselves evolved into their current morphological form during the later period of the Stone Age. See also: Human evolution Stone Age - Palaeolithic. The Old Stone Age period runs from about 2 million years ago to the end of the Pleistocene, 10,000 years ago. For areas with an early neolithisation, the Palaeolithic in ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Kidney stone - Treatment

Stones less than 5 mm in size usually will pass spontaneously, with diclofenac usually proving effective pain management. However the majority of stones greater than 6 mm will require some form of intervention, especially so if the stone is stuck causing obstruction and infection of the urinary tract. In many cases non-invasive Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy may be used. Otherwise some form of invasive procedure is required; with approaches including retrograde ureteral, percutaneous nephrolithotomy or open surgery, and using laser, ultrasonic and mechanical (pneumatic, shock ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Stone Age - The Stone Age in popular culture

As a slang term, "Stone Age" can be used to describe a modern civilization or group of people that live in relatively primitive conditions, even though its use is often a misnomer. The phrase "bomb them back into the Stone Age" implies a fierce attack that utterly destroys its target's infrastructure, forcing its survivors to revert to primitive technology in order to survive. The image of the caveman is commonly associated with the Stone Age. For example, the 2003 documentary series showing the evolution of humans throu ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Pictish stones - Purpose and meaning

The purpose and meaning of the stones are still unknown, but they probably served as a indicator for clans, lineages, or kindreds. It is possible, though there is no associated interrment, that they honored individuals as a kind of grave stone. The symbols could also have been some kind of pictographic system of writing. The symbols on the symbol stones appear to have a meaning, though no one is sure what it is. There are several groups of Pictish "symbols". All the symbol stones are differentiated by having symbols from one group of ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Philosopher's stone Fullmetal Alchemist - Using a Stone

The Philosopher's Stone could have infinite potential uses for an Alchemist. The State Alchemist Tim Marcoh had researched it for the Military, and was terrified to discover how the military had started using the Red Stones to improve the military efficience of the Alchemists involved in the conflict, rendering them almost invincible. He then used the imperfect Philosopher's Stone only as a way to help the sick. It was hinted that even those unskilled in Alchemy, like Father Cornello could perform amazing feats like the transmutation of chim ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Stoning of the Devil - Incidents

The stoning of the devil ritual is the most dangerous part of the pilgrimage because sudden crowd movements on or near the Jamarat Bridge can cause people to be crushed. On several occasions hundreds of participants have suffocated or been trampled to death in stampedes. The bridge has been expanded in recent years to accommodate the ever-growing number of pilgrims who perform the Hajj every year, but because of the sheer size of the crowds the ritual is nearly impossible to control. An important step in managing crowds, mentioned above, is the ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Seer stone - Seer Stone in Mormonism

In historic Mormonism, a seer stone is a stone or crystal used by a prophet for receiving revelation from God. Joseph Smith, Jr., founder of the Church of Christ/Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints reported that in 1827, in response to prayer, he was visited by an angel who revealed the location of a set of ancient records engraved on gold plates, buried on a hillside. He followed the directions to the location, and located a st ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - The Sword in the Stone - The revisions

The version appearing in 1959 in the tetralogy was substantially revised, partly to incorporate events and themes that White had originally intended to cover in a fifth volume (which was finally published after his death, as The Book of Merlyn). To this end, the revised version includes several new episodes and leaves out some of the episodes that had appeared in the original (notably Merlyn's battle with Madam Mim which appeared in the Disney film). However, many critics considered that the revised version was actually inferior to the original. Some publishers carried on using the original version, at least whe ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Oliver Stone - Other Work

In 1993, Stone produced a mini series for ABC Television called Wild Palms. In an ironic cameo, Stone appears on a television in the show discussing how the theories in his film JFK had been proven correct (the series took place in the future). Wild Palms has developed a moderate cult following in the years since it aired, and has recently been released on DVD. In 1997, Stone published A Child's Night Dream, a largely autobiographical novel first written in 1966-1967. After several unsuccessful attempts to ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Joss Stone - Biography

Joss Stone was born in Dover, Kent, England in 1987 and spent her teenage years in Devon. She grew up listening to American R&B and soul music performed by such artists as Aretha Franklin; as a result, she developed a throaty style of singing like her idols. At 14, she appeared on Star for a Night on BBC Television singing Franklin's "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman". She told MTV News, "I kind of clicked into soul music more than anything else because of the vocals. You've got to have good vocals to sing soul music and I alway ...

Recently, Stone has directed U-Turn (1997), which he describes as a small film that he would enjoy seeing as a teenager, Any Given Sunday (1999), a film about power struggles within and surrounding an American football team, and Alexander (2004), a biographical film about Alexander the Great. He later said he was stung by the critical pans and poor box office performance of Alexander. Eventually they wrangled themselves out of their contract with Silvertone and signed a large contract with Geffen Records. In late 1994, the Stone Roses released their long-awaited follow-up album, Second Coming. The music was heavily influenced by John Squire's guitar, with a heavy rock sound reminiscent at times of Led Zeppelin. Some of the songs, such as 'Your Star Will Shine' and 'Tightrope' have a English folk-like quality, and a mystical grandeur is present on tracks such as the enigmatic, meandering 'Breaking Into Heaven' and ' ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Sharpening stone - Natural versus artificial Stones

Although there is a certain amount of romance associated with using stone which is found naturally, there are some problems with this. First, over hundreds of years, the best mines have given up much of their best stone. This scarcity causes high prices for a good quality consistent stone. Lesser quality stones have problems of consistency and may have occasional larger pieces of grit or soft spots. With this in mind, and with modern technologies, artificial stones came to the market. There have been a variety of formulations over ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Stone duality - Overview of Stone-type dualities

Probably the most general duality which is classically referred to as "Stone duality" is the duality between the category Sob of sober spaces with continuous functions and the category SFrm of spatial frames with appropriate frame homomorphisms. The dual category of SFrm is the category of locales denoted by SLoc. The categorical equivalence of Sob and SLoc is the basis for the mathematical area of pointless topology, that is devoted to the study of Loc - the category of all locales of which SLoc is a full subcategory. The involved constructions are character ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Chic Stone - Later career

In the late 1970s and 1980s, Stone began a long association with Archie Comics, including its "Red Circle" and "Archie Adventure Series" superhero lines. This lesser-known work includes a story written by future Marvel editor-in-chief Tom DeFalco in Archie's Super Hero Special #2 (Aug. 1979), and Stone's inking fellow Silver Age veteran Dick Ayers on a Black Hood story in Blue Ribbon Comics #11 (Aug. 1984). Stone also worked on the regular Archie teen-humor line. Stone was inking for Marvel as late as The Mighty Thor #321 (July 1982). In the early 1990s, he drew commissioned art in Silver Age K ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Children of the Stones - The Time Circle

One of the more complicated aspects of Children of the Stones is the concept of the “time circle” and the “psychic bubble”. The main premise of this idea is that the village within the stone circle exists in a time rift where the same actions are played out, over and over again, with the end result being that the power of the circle will eventually be released to the outside world. Whenever this is faulted, however, the time circle resets and the same events attempt again to unfold. However, since time is passing in the outsid ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Philosopher's stone - Claims and frauds

The concept of a substance that could turn inexpensive metals into valuable gold naturally attracted the attention of many entrepreneurs of all sorts — learned and amateurish, skeptical and gullible, honest and dishonest. An example that illustrates the spirit of the times is that of Rudolf II (1552-1612). This king of Bohemia, having found himself in financial difficulties, decided to invest heavily in the search for the philosopher's stone. He thus attracted to Prague a large number of alchemists, who were given ample material and financ ...

Stone: Encyclopedia II - Foundation stone - History

In ancient buildings, the foundation stone was placed at the north-east corner of the structure. This was thought to be an auspicious position. Often, the ceremony involved the placing of offerings of grain, wine and oil on or under the stone. These were symbolic of the produce and the people of the land and the means of their subsistence. This in turn derived from the practice in still more ancient times of making an animal or human sacrifice that was laid in the foundations. See also:
