Sthapatya Veda: Encyclopedia II - Hindu temple architecture - Design and History

The Magadha empire rose with the Shishunaga dynasty in around 650 BC. The Ashtadhyayi of Panini, the great grammarian of the 5th century BC speaks of images that were used in Hindu temple worship. The ordinary images were called pratikriti and the images for worship were called archa (see As. 5.3.96-100). Patanjali, the 2nd century BC author of the Mahabhashya commentary on the Ashtadhyayi, tells us more about the images. Deity images for sale were called Shivaka etc., but an archa of Shiva was just called Shiva. Patanjali mentions Shiva and ...

Introduction to Hinduism

Statistically, there are over 700 million Hindus, mainly in Bharat (India), and Nepal. Hinduism is referred to as Sanatana Dharma, the eternal faith. Hinduism is not strictly a religion. It is based on the practice of Dharma, the code of life. Since Hinduism has no founder, anyone who practices Dharma can call himself a Hindu. He can question the authority of any scripture, or even the existence of the Divine.

Sthapatya Veda: Encyclopedia II - Vaastu Shastra - Conclusion

Vaastu Shastra evolved as a compilation of planning principles for a healthy living based on the knowledge base of the time (similar to Western treatises such as Vitruvius') and was not meant to be absolute. Its current popularity stems from its focus on a wholesome approach to space and form. Vastu was earlier used in the design of Hindu homes, but became less prominent in the industrialization period during and following the colonial British Raj. But it is used extensively in temple design, and so survived in the clans of temple designers ...

Sthapatya Veda: Encyclopedia II - Vaastu Shastra - Mandalas- types and properties

The form of the Vaastu Purusha Mandala is basically a square but there are various types of mandalas depending on the way in which the basic square is divided. In each case, the square is subdivided into smaller squares by lines running parallel/ perpendicular to the sides. Each side of the square can be divided from 1 to 32 divisions. Thus, the number of squares in the Vaastu Purusha Mandala may vary from 12 to 322, i.e from 1, 4, 16, 25 and so on to 1024. Each of the ...

Sthapatya Veda: Encyclopedia II - Vaastu Shastra - Mandala in site planning and architecture

The mandala being a metaphysical plan is put to use in site planning and architecture through a process called the Pada Vinyasa. Pada Vinyasa is a method whereby any site can be divided into uniform grids/modules or padas. Mandalas have certain points known as marmas which are vital and vulnerable energy spots on which nothing should be built. They are determined by certain proportional relationships of the squares and th ...

Sthapatya Veda: Encyclopedia II - Vedic City Iowa - History

The idea for Vedic City, a centralized location to hold group transcendental meditation, was conceived in 1991. This idea evolved into a full township centered on the principles and teachings of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, including Maharishi Sthapatya Veda design. Sometimes referred to as Vastu architecture, it aims to design buildings that promote happiness and energy. Notable aspects of this principle include the gold kalash on the roof of each building and that all structures face to the east. Financial and infrastructure needs led Vedic City to seek formal approval as a city from the state. It was incorpora ...
