Staircase: Encyclopedia II - Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument - Controversy

The Monument was declared in September, 1996 at the height of the 1996 presidential election campaign by President Bill Clinton (Democrat), and was controversial from the moment of creation. The declaration ceremony was held at Grand Canyon National Park in the adjacent state of Arizona, and the Utah congressional delegation and state governor were notified only 24 hours in advance. This was seen by many as a transparent political ploy to gain votes in the contested state of Arizona. That November, Clinton won ...

Staircase: Faith: Staircase to God

Yours faithfully - A letter ends there. However, faith is the beginning of the human quest for self-discovery and the Absolute. Faith can be neither forced nor taught; it is an experience that transcends trust, reason, belief and ideology.

Belief in religious scripture confines the mind; the trust we repose in an individual, too, is a limiting factor. The intellect can only too often weave a cobweb of theories, and reason can cause mistrust, taking us away from discovering the great scope and depth of an infinite power that's faith, that can otherwise serve as an effective spiritual guide.

Staircase: Feng Shui and Stair Cases

Feng Shui and Stair Cases

First, we must understand what a staircase is before we can know how it affects us. Staircases are made up of many steps, each protruding out as a potential source of danger. When we are not careful, it is easy to stumble or hurt ourselves on the steps. Staircases are also vertical shafts that penetrate through each floor, making a "hole" in the building, especially in high rises. In feng shui, staircases are known as a source of sha chi or potentially harmful or degenerating energy. Therefore, in order to understand what effect it has on us, we must know the residents' birth elements and where the staircase is located. Different people and different stair locations have different effects.

Staircase: Encyclopedia - Current issues in teaching

Teaching is a unique job. Teachers are generally university-educated, yet are unionized employees who are not considered professionals in the conventional sense. Finally, though a school usually employs many teachers, the teachers themselves may not actually spend much time together. This can lead to feelings of isolation from one's peers, and is a problem exacerbated should one not get along with his or her students. Throughout history, the intellectual challenges of pedagogy have been compounded by many societal issues. Because teac ...

A baluster (through the Fr. balustre, from Ital. balaustro, from balaustra, "pomegranate flower" [from a resemblance to the post], from Lat. balaustium, from Gr. balaustion) is a small moulded shaft, square or circular, in stone or wood and sometimes in metal, supporting the coping of a parapet or the rail of a staircase, an assemblage of them being known as a "balustrade". In County of Allegheny v. ACLU 492 U.S. 573 (1989), the U.S. Supreme Court considered the constitutionality of two recurring holiday displays located on public property in downtown Pittsburgh.
