Sri Aurobindo | A Wisdom Archive on Sri Aurobindo | | Sri Aurobindo A scholar of India's spiritual-philosophical tradition, Sri Aurobindo also developed an original philosophy, which contained an evolutionary dimension. Humanity's destiny, according to him, is to evolve towards a higher state of consciousness that would fundamentally alter life, as we know it. To accomplish this, Sri Aurobindo synthesized various traditions of ancient spirituality and offered the instrument of integral Yoga. This prophet of the New Age not only predicted the perfectibility of the human condition but also assured that the day is not far when man's Supramental consciousness achieves its fullest fruition on earth. | |

| Resources on Sri Aurobindo | | | | Sri Aurobindo Revolutionary, poet, yogi, spiritual teacher, visionarySri Aurobindo was all this and much more. A leading member of the so-called 'extremist' group in India's struggle for independence from British rule, he was thrown into Calcutta's Alipore jail in 1909 for 'terrorist activities'. It was here that he had his first spiritual experiences and, in his own words, "it was no longer by its (the jail's) high walls that I was imprisoned; no, it was Vasudeva who surrounded me".
This marked the beginning of a new path in Aurobindo's life, which would later lead to Pondicherry and creation of the Aurobindo Ashram there, climaxing in a decisive spiritual realization in 1926. This phase also introduced the Mother, the yogi's 'regent and shakti' and the administrative brain behind the Ashram at Pondicherry.

 | | | Sri Aurobindo: Encyclopedia II - Sri Aurobindo - Aurobindo's influence
Sri Aurobindo comes at a very crucial moment in the history of thought when Marxist materialism, Nietzschean nihilism and Freudian vitalism were popular and fashionable. Besides, phenomenology and existentialism had their run along-side him. On the whole, along with the new-fangled science and Theosophy, these new philosophical formulations fermented enough confusion among the elite. In a way, the disparate positions arrived at in Western thought find their synthesis in Sri Aurobindo's philosophy. By aligning them with the ancient Indian wisdom, he comes up with an integral visio ...

 | | | Sri Aurobindo: Paris to Pondicherry: Journey of Discovery ''All life is yoga,'' said Sri Aurobindo, referring to the work done not for the satisfaction of one's desires or ego but as an offering to the Divine, which is actually a powerful means of yoga. This is how the Mother explains the profundity of Sri Aurobindo's vision: ''There is an ascending evolution in nature which goes from the stone to the plant, from the plant to the animal, from the animal to man. Because man is, for the moment, the last rung at the summit of the ascending evolution, he considers himself as the final stage in this ascension and believes there can be nothing on earth superior to him. In that he is mistaken…." (See also: Mirra - The Mother, Spiritual Guidance, God and Religion, Peace on Earth, Peace of Mind, Love and Happiness, Life and Beyond, Body Mind and Soul)

This would be a Divine Life on Earth characterised by knowledge, truth, substance and ene ...

 | | | Sri Aurobindo: Limitless Love Is Free Of Bondage Detachment is not renunciation. It is a re-orientation of attitudes and lifestyles. It is a creative endeavour that involves a shift in consciousness. Free-flowing consciousness helps us reach a state of creative calm. According to Sri Aurobindo , when one withdraws from the turmoil of outer life, the evolving consciousness becomes centred and observant like a detached witness or sakshi . The witness state, sakshi bhav , is a continual disassociation from worldly desires and sense-identification. It is a state of neutrality that goes beyond body and mind to communicate with the spirit. (See also: Love and Happiness, Life and Beyond, Body Mind and Soul)
