Spirituality in Business: Working With Devotion

You may know people who are "devoted to their work" - meaning that they are dedicated to their careers and their jobs. If this comes from the ego, it means that they experience self-gratification from what they do. The reasons could be many: perhaps the power they enjoy, perhaps the use of their talents, perhaps the difference they make through their work. There's nothing wrong with this type of devotion and certainly it has contributed to the betterment of our world in many ways.

However, if our devotion to our work only remains at this self-gratifying level, we are missing a huge opportunity for spiritual growth. So come with us as we explore this path of devotion as a spiritual practice at work.

Spirituality in Business: Waking Up Spiritual Wisdom

In all major religions, the path of spiritual wisdom ( jnana yoga) is the awakening of consciousness to see the inherent Divinity in all beings - which literally means to be aware of the "substance behind the form." As the Christian mystic Meister Eckhart once wrote:

Whoever has God truly as a companion is with Him in all places... When a person keeps their gaze fixed upon God, all things become God for him or her.

Imagine the difference it could make in the quality of your work, and in the satisfaction you derive from your work, if you were steeped in this unitive consciousness that Divinity resides in all of creation.

Spirituality in Business: Bless Outside For Happiness Inside

"May all beings be happy" is a beautiful blessing that SN Goenka, a great teacher of the Buddhist Vipassana meditation, expresses throughout his teachings. This prayer was originally sung by the ancient spiritual masters of India and is still sung around the world even today.

In the moments of singing or saying these words in a spiritual context, they seem so full of meaning for us, and our hearts truly wish for happiness for all beings. But then, as we engage in the everyday world of work, it's not so easy to maintain the spirit of this blessing for all people. It's all too easy to become agitated and impatient, and to have negative rather than positive thoughts towards others.

Spirituality in Business: See, Savour, And Serve The Divine Through Your Work

In recent articles, we've spoken of three different pathways that people commonly choose for growing spiritually through their work: the paths of action, devotion, and wisdom. The path of wisdom leads us to work with the awareness that Divinity is in everyone and everything.

As the Sikh's book Adi Granth says:

God dwells in everything, God shines in every heart. Wherever I look, there is God; no one else is seen.

Spirituality in Business: Hosting Conversations That Matter

Every leader knows that it's vitally important to stay in touch with those whom they lead and others who are impacted by their leadership (i.e., the stakeholders of their organisation). But how is it possible to stay genuinely aware of the things that are most meaningful to these people, especially if they have diverse and often differing views?

Spirituality in Business: Attune Your Work With Righteousness

In this article, we will explore righteousness, the second of five human values (truth, righteousness, peace, love, and non-violence) found in all spiritual traditions. "Righteousness" is one of the most common translations of the Sanskrit word "dharma," which in essence means to act in accord with divine law, moral principles, and the unity of all life.

Righteousness, from a spiritual basis, is acting in harmony with the Divine nature that is inherent in yourself and all creation. This spiritual basis of righteousness is well expressed by Dena Merriam, Vice-Chairperson of Ruder Finn, an internationally prominent public relations firm:

Spirituality in Business: Love Is The Ultimate Power

When love comes from the heart, it is the motivator, energiser and strengthener that gives you the power to speak boldly and act courageously - all the while respecting the people and conditions you find yourself in.

One day, this statement from Sathya Sai Baba really caught our attention:

There is no power more effective than Love.

Spirituality in Business: Conquer Your Inner Enemy

Harming others is never necessary for success. As we are aware of the Divinity that is in everyone, we can face our own tendencies to cause harm, even subtly, and discover non-violent ways of responding to our work situations.

Have you ever experienced...

Being in a tough competition with someone for a promotion you really wanted?

Having someone oppose your strongly-held point of view?

Struggling with another company to get or keep a customer?

Spirituality in Business: Journalists Need A Loving Detachment

There's this story about a writer who drifted into journalism. Sent to a distant island to cover a civil war, he happily lazed around in a beach house, watched spectacular sunrises and breathtaking sunsets, and occasionally heard the distant 'musical' rumble of guns.

He faithfully recorded all this, and was promptly sacked for missing the 'big story'. But while he was an utter failure as a journalist, wasn't he an astute observer of the relative truth of the waking state?

Spirituality in Business: Your Creator can be Your Best Friend

Two men went into a mango garden. One man started counting the mango trees and the number of fruit each bore and approximate value of the orchard.

The other man went straight to the owner and making his acquaintance was invited by him to pluck and taste the fruit.

One was busy in counting and calculating, the other was enjoying the delicious fruit. Ramakrishna Paramhansa would cite this example to show the difference between the man of dry academics and the man of devotion.

Spirituality in Business: Learn to Let Go, Adapt to Change

Today, dealing with change is perceived as a huge challenge. In fact, 'change management' has become a major preoccupation of leaders in all walks of life, including in government, business and institutions.

Employees too are grappling with changes in the work place. More than ever before, the number of people individually striving to learn more and grow at a personal level is increasing by leaps and bounds. So they have to learn to adapt themselves to changing situations. Most of us are fairly quick at learning, at cultivating new tastes and fashions. Yet, our first reaction to change is always tinged with suspicion and caution, and in some cases, resistance.

Spirituality in Business: Encyclopedia - 20th century

The 20th century lasted from 1901 to 2000 in the Gregorian calendar. Common usage sometimes regards it as lasting from 1900 to 1999. The 20th century is also sometimes known as the nineteen hundreds (1900s). However, a number of arguments have been used to justify the common usage. One advanced by Stephen Jay Gould is that the first decade had only nine years, thus contradicting the definition of decade equaled 10 years. Another argument is that the astronomical year numbering system for years does have a year zero, the ...
