Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: Encyclopedia II - Spirituality - Directed spirituality
One aspect of 'Being spiritual' is goal-directed, with aims such as: simultaneously improve one's wisdom and willpower, achieve a closer connection to Deity/the universe, and remove illusions or false ideas at the sensory, feeling and thinking aspects of a person. The 'Plato's cave' analogy in book VII of The Republic is one of the most well known descriptions of the spiritual development process, and thus, an excellent aid in under ...

Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: Encyclopedia II - Spirituality - The spiritual and the religious

An important distinction needs to be made between spirituality in religion and spirituality as opposed to religion. In recent years, spirituality in religion often carries connotations of the believer's faith being more personal, less dogmatic, more open to new ideas and myriad influences, and more pluralistic than the faiths of established religions. It also can connote the nature of a believer's personal relationship with God, as opposed to the general relationship ...

Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: Spiritual Values Are Human Values

In February of 2000, we began writing an in-depth programme for working people which explores five human values that are found across all spiritual traditions: Truth, righteousness, love, peace and non-violence. The title is Human Values in the Workplace: Making Spirituality the Inner Context for Your Work.  [1]

We were inspired to write this programme because our collective business experience showed us that these five human values were the fundamental roots of a healthy, vibrant, viable organisation - and of healthy, vibrant, viable individuals.

Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: Living Truth At Work

In this article we will explore truth , the first of five human values found in all spiritual traditions (truth, righteousness, peace, love, non-violence). Most people think of truth as simply being honest. However, the spiritual essence of truth reveals much deeper implications as Sathya Sai Baba, a spiritual teacher explains:

Truth is not merely telling the facts about what you see or hear or know. These are temporal truths. Truth relates to the unchanging reality. It is changeless in all three categories of time: past, present, and future. That is Divinity.

Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: Attune Your Work With Righteousness

In this article, we will explore righteousness, the second of five human values (truth, righteousness, peace, love, and non-violence) found in all spiritual traditions. "Righteousness" is one of the most common translations of the Sanskrit word "dharma," which in essence means to act in accord with divine law, moral principles, and the unity of all life.

Righteousness, from a spiritual basis, is acting in harmony with the Divine nature that is inherent in yourself and all creation. This spiritual basis of righteousness is well expressed by Dena Merriam, Vice-Chairperson of Ruder Finn, an internationally prominent public relations firm:

Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: A Spiritual Revolution

Buddhist Quotes: A Spiritual Revolution

My call for a spiritual revolution is thus not a call for a religious revolution. Nor is it a reference to a way of life that is somehow other-worldly, still less to something magical or mysterious. Rather, it is a call for a radical re-orientation away from our habitual preoccupation with self towards concern for the wider community of beings with whom we are connected, and for conduct which recognizes others’ interests alongside our own.

- His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: Uses of Spirituality At the Workplace

Does the recent interest exhibited in non-fiction titles such as The Soul of Business, A Spiritual Audit of Corporate America, The Stirring of Soul in the Workplace, The Three-Minute Meditation etc in the US point to the possible evolution of the "enlightened corporate sector"?

Do Indian managers, born in a land that has offered "yoga and meditation" to the world corporate sector (to overcome stress), have the "first-mover advantage"? These are the questions that should interest "enlightened" managers in "progressive" Indian corporations.

Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: God & Science: Not Mutually Exclusive

Most traditional religions assert that God is the ultimate Truth, while science, without admitting the existence of any personal God, claims that its motive force is the quest for Truth. Science and religion seldom see eye-to-eye; this is partly because science has played a big role in enhancing our material comforts.

Since religion has always regarded materialistic conquests and gains as being secondary and sometimes even detrimental to our spiritual progress, the spiritually-minded have come to look upon science as a sphere of activity that denies the existence of the Divine.

Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: When the Young Keep the Faith

Have we, as a generation, succumbed to negative thinking? If we have, maybe this explains why more young people today are seeking solace in spirituality despite claims that the younger generation is moving away from traditions and religion.

Modern concepts and changing lifestyles have ensured that spirituality for the young is not confined to mere idol worship - it is more about seeking deeper truths and attaining self-knowledge.

Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: Fuelling a Positive Future

In our last article, we spoke about the art of dialogue and how it can inspire meaningful conversations that lead to aligned action. Another way of fostering communication that creates energy and momentum is appreciative inquiry  [1]  . In an article titled Appreciative Inquiry: A Transformative Paradigm  [2]  , the underlying concepts are explained as:

Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: The keys to integrating spirituality and science

Our scientific understanding has undermined many conventional approaches to spirituality at the very time we most need to strengthen these capacities. The source of the difficulty may hold the key to the solution. Science is widely accepted because it works. It looks at the world as it is searching for the simplest possible description. Discovery of simple descriptive laws has led to enormous power to control the phenomena the laws describe feeding our technical prowess. It was only possible to do this by divorcing science from feeling and values so one could see what is and not what one wants to see.

Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: Corporate Spirituality Encourages Inclusion

If you are a corporate leader and you would like to include spirituality in your organisation's culture, you are not alone.

Business leaders we've met, and management students sometimes ask us if it's really possible to make spirituality an overt and explicit part of an organisational culture - without causing religious conflicts or being inappropriate to an otherwise secular way of operating.

Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: Reverence for Nature Is The Only Way to Save It

Ancient scriptures say we have five sheaths: physical environment, physical body, mind, intuitive sheath or subtle environment, and the Self.

Indian tradition believes in the sanctity of nature. Our rishis perceived the mountains, rivers, Sun, Moon and trees to be sacred. That which is sacred is honoured. Environmental consciousness has been built into our way of life, to become our second nature. But when we start moving away from our nature we begin polluting the environment. Unfortunately, we pollute our rivers and mountains in the name of sacred rituals.

Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: Building A Spiritual Foundation

As you begin to consider the ways to foster a spiritual revolution at work through your leadership, it's natural that you will want to be as inclusive and as respectful as you can with those whom you lead. So, what is the wisest way for a leader to do this?

Before you invite people to return to their spiritual roots and do their work from that foundation, always start by doing your own inner homework first . If you haven't already defined the spiritual view of life from which you lead, take some quiet time to do that now*. As a refresher, here are the two main steps to take:

Spirituality - Spiritual traditions and communities: Spiritual Counsel For Rio Plus Ten

Spirituality and sustainability go hand in hand. Living in a sustainable manner helps in spiritual growth. This week, representatives of more than a hundred countries are congregating in Johannesburg, South Africa, to discuss and perhaps come to an agreement on how to create sustainable living on Planet Earth.

However, none of the information handouts made available so far have given any indication that there will be discussions on the subject of spirituality and its effects on sustainability.
