| | | | Spiritual Philosophies: Encyclopedia II - Spiritual evolution - Occult Concepts of Spiritual EvolutionTheories of Spiritual Evolution are important in many Occult and Esoteric teachings, which emphasise the progression and development of the individual either after death (Spiritualism) or through successive reincarnations (Theosophy, Hermeticism).
Spiritual evolution - Spiritualism.
In the 19th century Anglo-American Spiritualist ideas emphasise the progression of the soul after death to higher states of existence, in contrast to the ...

| | | | Spiritual Philosophies: Encyclopedia II - Spiritual evolution - German IdealismThe nineteenth century German philosophers inherited Kant’s overwhelmingly influential ontological framework, which had distinguished between things-as-they-appear (or phenomena) from things-as-they-truly-are (noumena). To this was added ideas about evolutionism which were beginning to be prevalent in different realms like science (Jean-Baptiste Lamarck) and literature (Goethe). The confluence of these ideas resuted in German Idealism—the phi ...

Spiritual evolution - A Common Vision.
Although contemporaries, Sri Aurobindo and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin did not meet, or even seem to have been aware of each other's work. Nevertheless there are amazing similarities between the two in their respective evolutionary philosophies. (see e.g. Bruteau 1974, Sethna 1973). Both describe a progression from inanimate matter through life and mind to a future state of Divine consciousness, not as an otherworldly realisation but a consumation and Divinisation of the coll ...

Spiritual evolution - The Cyclic Cosmos.
Mircea Eliade has suggested that in many pre-modern cultures one finds the concept of the Fall and a "nostalgia for paradise". However for those cultures that have a cyclic cosmology, the concept of a progressive deterioration of the universe (as in the Hesiodic, Hindu, and Lurianic cosmologies of a degradation from a Golden Age to an Iron Age or Kali Yuga might be balanced by a corresponding ascent to more spiritual stages and a return to paradisical conditions. This is what one finds in Buddhist and especially Jain cosmologies. ...

| | | | Spiritual Philosophies: Encyclopedia II - Spiritual evolution - Surat Shabda YogaSurat Shabda Yoga cosmology depicts the whole of creation (the macrocosm) as being emanated and arranged in a spiritually differentiated hierarchy, often referred to as eggs, regions, or planes. Typically, eight spiritual levels are described above the physical plane, although names and subdivisions within these levels will vary to some extent by mission and Master. (One version of the creation from a Surat Shabda Yoga perspective is depicted at the Sant Ajaib Singh Ji ...

| | | | Spiritual Philosophies: Encyclopedia II - Spiritual evolution - New Age ideasNew Age thought is strongly syncretic and based on a superficial but creative interpretation of previous spiritual and esoteric traditions, especially Eastern thought, Theosophy, and popular (mis)interpretations of science. A common theme is the evolution or the transcendence of the human or collective planetary consciousness in a higher state or higher "vibratory" (a metaphor taken from G. I. Gurdjieff) level.
Among the better thinkings of the "New Age", David Spangler's communications speak of a "New Heaven and a new Earth", while Christopher Hills refers (perhaps influenced by Sri Auro ...

| | | | | | | | Spiritual Philosophies: Encyclopedia II - Meaning of life - Religious beliefsIt is often suggested that religion is a response to humanity's need to simply stop being confused, or to the fear of death (and the concomitant desire not to die). By defining a realm outside of life (the spiritual realm), these needs are fulfilled by providing a meaning, purpose, and hope for our otherwise pointless, directionless, and finite lives. Most people who believe in a personal God would agree that it is God "in whom we live and move and have our being". The notion here is that we ought to seek a higher authority who will give our ...

| | | | Spiritual Philosophies: Encyclopedia II - Sri Aurobindo - Aurobindo's evolutionary philosophyThese philosophical and cosmological themes are applied to Sri Aurobindo's vision of cosmic and human evolution. He argues that mankind as an entity is not the last rung in the evolutionary scale, but can evolve spiritually beyond its current limitations, moving out of an essential Ignorance born of creation, to a future state of Supramental existence. This would be a Divine Life on Earth characterised by knowledge, truth, substance and ene ...

| | | | Spiritual Philosophies: Encyclopedia II - Sri Aurobindo - Aurobindo's influenceSri Aurobindo comes at a very crucial moment in the history of thought when Marxist materialism, Nietzschean nihilism and Freudian vitalism were popular and fashionable. Besides, phenomenology and existentialism had their run along-side him. On the whole, along with the new-fangled science and Theosophy, these new philosophical formulations fermented enough confusion among the elite. In a way, the disparate positions arrived at in Western thought find their synthesis in Sri Aurobindo's philosophy. By aligning them with the ancient Indian wisdom, he comes up with an integral visio ...

| | | | Spiritual Philosophies: Encyclopedia II - Sri Aurobindo - Contribution to Hindu philosophyOne of Aurobindo's main philosophical achievements was to introduce the concept of evolution into Vedantic thought. Samkhya philosophy had already proposed such a notion centuries earlier, but Aurobindo rejected the materialistic tendencies of both Darwinism and Samkhya, and proposed an evolution of spirit rather than matter.
He rejects the Mayavada of Advaita Vedanta, and solves the problem of the linkage between the ineffable Brahman or Absolute and the world of multiplicity by positing a transitional hypostasis between the two, whi ...
