Spiritual Inspirations: Pick Up The Phone, It Might Be God Calling

All my life, I have believed that there is a necessary interaction that occurs between a person and the Divine. This interaction does not come only to prophets, Bodhisatvas, and other great spiritual masters, it comes also to us: ordinary people in our ordinary lives. A beautiful little article by Christina Baldwin about our ability to be connected to the divine.

Spiritual Inspirations: Getting Inspired By Spiritual Masters

In Buddhism, the striving is to awaken insight within oneself, through one's own efforts. A guru is then someone who embodies a possibility, our own potential. He offers the inspiration one can realistically aspire to and in time lifts the veils of ignorance over one's true enlightened nature. The guru teaches and demonstrates the path. The onus remains on us to make the effort, with the guru's help, to acquire the skilful means to make the journey.

Spiritual Inspirations: Be Cool, Draw Energy From Spiritual Devotion

Have you seen how peacefully a child sleeps in the lap of his parent, even in a noisy, crowded local train? The hustle-bustle disturbs everyone, but not the child, due to his implicit faith in the protection of his parent.

All of us strive diligently to overcome our many fears: financial, familial, social, academic and physical. However, the necessary security measures like insurances, helmets, buzzer alarms and health check-ups fail to free us from a disconcerting sense of insecurity within us. Why?

All fear originates in an unbalanced, unrealistic material conception of life. The material aspect of our life has its importance; we need to feed, clothe, house and provide for ourselves and our loved ones.

Spiritual Inspirations: Psychic Perception, Spiritual Insight, and Inspiration

Above the rational mind and below the soul realm is an intermediary plane of consciousness that I call the intuitional. It is very difficult to characterize this realm, because it transcends mental concepts but is still not a realm of being like the soul. The intuitional plane is the "highest" or most subtle and universal part of the created worlds. Although God and souls are the truly creative agents of the universe, we could say that the process of creating begins with the intuition and then moves to concepts, feeling responses, images and shapes, and finally physical manifestation. Thus intuition is a key to initiating creativity.

Spiritual Inspirations: Beyond The Placid, Winding River

"If there be a heaven on earth, it is this, it is this, it is this!"

These words are inscribed over the entrance to the Hall of Special Audience, in the royal gardens of the Red Fort of Delhi, built by Emperor Shah Jehan in the 17th century.

Spiritual Inspirations: Enemies as Spiritual Teachers

Buddhist Quotes: Enemies as Spiritual Teachers

If you can cultivate the right attitude, your enemies are your best spiritual teachers because their presence provides you with the opportunity to enhance and develop tolerance, patience and understanding.

Spiritual Inspirations: Climb the Mountain of Spiritual Awareness

Hindu Quotes: Climb the Mountain of Spiritual Awareness

For aspirants who want to climb the mountain of spiritual awareness, the path is selfless work; for those who have ascended to yoga the path is stillness and peace. When a person has freed himself from attachment to the results of work, and from desires for the enjoyment of sense objects, he ascends to the unitive state.

- Bhagavad Gita 6:3-4

Spiritual Inspirations: The Dalai Lama on Religion & Spirituality

Buddhist Quotes: The Dalai Lama on Religion & Spirituality

I believe there is an important distinction to be made between religion and spirituality. Religion I take to be concerned with belief in the claims to salvation of one faith tradition or another--an aspect of which is acceptance of some form of meta-physical or philosophical reality, including perhaps an idea of heaven or hell. Connected with this are religious teachings or dogma, ritual, prayers and so on.

Spirituality I take to be concerned with those qualities of the human spirit--such as love and compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness, contentment, a sense of responsibility, a sense of harmony, which bring happiness to both self and others.

Spiritual Inspirations: Decline of the Family

Hindu Quotes: Decline of the Family

When a family declines, ancient traditions are destroyed. With them are lost the spiritual foundations for life, and the family loses its sense of unity. Where there is no sense of unity, the women of the family become corrupt; and with the corruption of its women, society is plunged into chaos.

- Bhagavad Gita 1:40-41

Spiritual Inspirations: OM is the Supreme Symbol of the Lord

Hindu Quotes: OM is the Supreme Symbol of the Lord

OM is the supreme symbol of the Lord.

OM is the whole, OM affirms; OM signals

The chanting of the hymns from the Vedas.

The priest begins with OM; spiritual teachers

And their students commence with OM.

The student who is established in OM

Becomes united with the Lord of Love.

- Taittiriya Upanishad

Spiritual Inspirations: A Spiritual Revolution

Buddhist Quotes: A Spiritual Revolution

My call for a spiritual revolution is thus not a call for a religious revolution. Nor is it a reference to a way of life that is somehow other-worldly, still less to something magical or mysterious. Rather, it is a call for a radical re-orientation away from our habitual preoccupation with self towards concern for the wider community of beings with whom we are connected, and for conduct which recognizes others’ interests alongside our own.

Spiritual Inspirations: Not Touched by Time

Muslim Quotes: Not Touched by Time

God, the supreme being, is neither circumscribed by space, nor touched by time; he cannot be found in a particular direction, and his essence cannot change. The secret conversation is thus entirely spiritual; it is a direct encounter between God and the soul, abstracted from all material constraints.

- Ibn Sina, "Kitab al-Najat"

Spiritual Inspirations: An Antidote to Self-Grasping

Buddhist Quotes: An Antidote to Self-Grasping

Anything that acts as an antidote to self-grasping is Dharma practice. Whereas, even though we may engage in a great variety of practices that may appear to be spiritual, if they do not act to destroy our self-grasping, they are not Dharma practice.

Spiritual Inspirations: Life is Too Short to Learn Everything

Buddhist Quotes: Life is Too Short to Learn Everything

There are too many things in this world to be learned, and life is too short to learn everything, so we should complete that which we have begun rather than dabbling in many things.

- Geshe Ngawang Dhargyey, "Advice From a Spiritual Friend"
