Stress for working women is multi-dimensional. A normal working day means she works three shifts: at home, doing the morning chores before leaving for office, then at work in the office, and then again at home, helping children with their homework and doing the evening chores and putting together the family meal. A meditation teacher gave a brief introductory lecture about the need to keep one's mind focused with the help of pranayama breathing. "Meditation", she emphasised, "helps to make one become peaceful inside; this sense of peace would then spread to other members of your family and also in your workplace."

| | | | Spiritual Growth: Ten Soldiers of Mara - Obstruct Nibbana
Conquering Mara is a big challenge. Consider Mara an evil 'being' out to delude humanity - a personification of one's mental impurities. Sayagyi U Ba Khin, the renowned Vipassana meditation teacher of the twentieth century, explained the 10 biggest obstructions on the path to total inner purification. "You have to be very careful", he said. "You have to stand firm and face many difficulties, so that you can know true anicca (Pali word for impermanence) from your own experience". The Buddha describes these difficulties in Padhana Sutta:

| | | | Spiritual Growth: Waiting For Life To Reveal Itself
Nothing worthwhile in life is sudden. As a poet said, we wait for birth. We wait for love. We wait for life to reveal its meaning to us year after year, experience by experience. Waiting is the law of life and the measure of love . 'Waiting' is a common Biblical theme. Simeon, who was waiting for Israel to be saved, and the prophet Anna, both find a lifetime of waiting for the Messiah worthwhile when Jesus is presented to them in the Temple.

| | | | Spiritual Growth: Ramakrishna's Steps To Self Knowledge
Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa's advice to house-holders is: "A little spiritual discipline is necessary in order to know what lies within. The painter first draws the outlines and then fills in the details and colours at leisure. The moulder first makes the image out of clay, then plasters it, gives it a coat of whitewash, and last of all, paints it with a brush. All these steps must be undertaken successively." This is Ramakrishna's first 'commandment'.

| | | | | | | | | Spiritual Growth: The Truth Beyond Success and Failure
It does not matter to a man of awareness whether he is successful or unsuccessful, well-known or absolutely unknown, powerful or just a nobody. To a man of awareness, these dualities don't matter at all, because awareness is the greatest treasure. When you have it, you don't want anything else. You don't want to become the president or prime minister of a country. Those who pursue power suffer even in success - they live in the eternal fear that they might lose it. At first they suffered because they were not successful; now after being successful, too, they are suffering because of a feeling of insecurity.

| | | | | | Spiritual Growth: Find the Oneness Beyond Duality
It is very easy to advise others. Only the one who suffers knows the extent of the pain. At the same time there is no difference between one person'spain and another"s, whether that person is rich or poor. No philosophy, sermon or concept will help relieve that suffering immediately. It is useful, however, to remember that at the core of any pain-causing conflict there is duality. We are part of a cycle that contains both pain and pleasure, creating a split between mind and body, delaying the healing process. Duality is all-pervasive; it is present in everything around us. Even that oft-quoted line from Shakespeare reflects this: "To be or not to be".

| | | | | | Spiritual Growth: Limitless Love Is Free Of Bondage
Detachment is not renunciation. It is a re-orientation of attitudes and lifestyles. It is a creative endeavour that involves a shift in consciousness. Free-flowing consciousness helps us reach a state of creative calm. According to Sri Aurobindo , when one withdraws from the turmoil of outer life, the evolving consciousness becomes centred and observant like a detached witness or sakshi . The witness state, sakshi bhav , is a continual disassociation from worldly desires and sense-identification. It is a state of neutrality that goes beyond body and mind to communicate with the spirit.

| | | | | Spiritual Growth: Self-awareness Can Bring Happiness
The very concept of God has given rise to many theological disputes and religious warfare. In fact, God is an enduring in-depth experience in the midst of ever-changing mental and sensate experiences - God is the inexhaustible source of love, harmony and peace. Happiness is sought by everyone. But the search is not focused in the right direction. We waste precious time seeking happiness in the mirage of objects, places and people; in relationships and ideologies; in possessions and wanton indulgences.

| | | | | Spiritual Growth: Metta Bhavna For Good Health
Metta Bhavna is a Pali word meaning meditation of loving kindness. The Buddha taught this meditation in Metta Sutta to 500 monks to cure them of their ailments and to protect them from evil spirits. Metta Bhavna is also practised to purify our mind of defilements like anger, jealousy, hatred and self-pity. We cannot stop the suffering of the world. We can only stop it in our mind, because we know our minds and we generate anger, hatred, and jealousy in our own mind. The only way we can still our minds is by practising Metta Bhavna.

| | | | Spiritual Growth: Nehru's Letter To Children
Dear Children, I like being with children and talking to them and, even more, playing with them. For the moment I forget that I am terribly old and it is very long ago since I was a child. But when I sit down to write, I cannot forget my age and the distance that separates you from me. Old people have a habit of delivering sermons and good advice to the young.
