THEOSOPHY

Society founded in 1875 by H.P. Blavatsky and Col. H.S. Olcott. Immediate divine illumination. Spiritual insight is superior to empirical knowledge. Specifically, Theosophy is the revelation of HPB that incorporates Gnosticism, Zoroastrianism, Platonism, Hinduism and Buddhism. Theosophy proposes "four bodies": the physical, the astral, the esthetic and the Self.

Nephesh (Hebrew, Jewish). Breath of life. Anima, Mens, Vita, Appetites. This term is used very loosely in the Bible. It generally means prana "life"; in the Kabbalah it is the animal passions and the animal Soul.

 Therefore, as maintained in theosophical teachings, Nephesh is the synonym of the Prana-Kamic Principle, or the vital animal Soul in man. [H. P. B.]

Brothers of Light. This is what the great authority on secret societies, Brother Kenneth R. H. Mackenzie IX., says of this Brotherhood. "A mystic order, Fratres Lucis, established in Florence in 1498.

Among the members of this order were Pasqualis, Cagliostro, Swedenborg, St. Martin, Eliphaz Lévi, and many other eminent mystics. Its members were very much persecuted by the Inquisition. It is a small but compact body, the members being spread all over the world."

Birs Nimrud (Chald.). Believed by the Orientalists to be the site of the Tower of Babel. The great pile of Birs Nimrud is near Babylon. Sir H. Rawlinson and several Assyriologists examined the excavated ruins and found that the tower consisted of seven stages of brick-work, each stage of a different colour, which shows that the temple was devoted to the seven planets. Even with its three higher stages or floors in ruins, it still rises now 154 feet above the level of the plain. ("See Borsippa".)

Baha'i Faith,The, Bahá‘u’lláh

A Islamic sect, originating in Persia, which has evolved into a major independent religion with approximately five million believers worldwide. Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad, Bahá‘u’lláh and others are viewed as a succession of divine messengers.

A 19th century Persian teacher, the Báb, (or “Gate”) predicted Bahá'u'lláh's coming. Bahá’í advocates a new global order of sexual equality, a one-world economic system to eliminate poverty, and a one-world religion.

Brotherhood of Luxor. A certain Brotherhood of mystics. Its name had far better never have been divulged, as it led a great number of well-meaning people into being deceived, and relieved of their money by a certain bogus Mystic Society speculators, born in Europe, only to be exposed and fly to America.

The name is derived from the ancient Lookshur in Beloochistan, lying between Bela and Kedjee. The order is very ancient and the most secret of all. It is useless to repeat that its members disclaim all connection with the "H.B. of L.", and the tutti quanti of commercial mystics, whether from Glasgow or Boston.

Healtheology: One of the fields of study offered by the American Institute of Holistic Theology, a correspondence school in Youngstown, Ohio. The institute defines Healtheology as a theological science of health, a concept that health and theology have a common ground.

Healtheology encompasses acupressure, angelic healing, aromatherapy, Ayurveda, breathwork, color therapy, crystal healing, herbalism, homeopathy, hypnosis, music therapy, polarity healing (polarity balancing), psychic healing, reflexology, shamanism, shiatsu, Therapeutic Prayer, transpersonal psychology, vibrational healing (vibrational medicine), and yoga. Its theory posits a soul with a threefold purpose: to experience, learn, and express itself. Practitioners are called Healtheologists.

Health Kinesiology (HK, HK system): An energy modality created by psychologist Jimmy Scott, Ph.D. HK is an offshoot of applied kinesiology. Its theory posits the Five Elements (Five Phases), a material layer of the aura, a meridian system, and reflex points for the Five Elements in the area of the navel. Corrective treatments may include crystals, gems, magnets, and homeopathic remedies.

Hellerwork: Combination of massage, movement education, and dialogue invented in 1978 by aerospace engineer Joseph Heller, the first president of the Rolf Institute (see Rolfing). It stems largely from Rolfing and Aston-Patterning. Its theory posits masculine energy and holds that the body is a vehicle, hologram, or channel for life energy through which self-expression can radiate.

Hawaiian Temple Bodywork (lomi ha'a mauli ola): Variation of lomi-lomi that combines prayerful bodywork, music, the hula (a Polynesian dance), and breathing exercises for raising mana.
