Spiritual Beliefs Dictionary: Nature Of God

Dictionaries usually describe God as the Supreme Being. Since we cannot put God on a table for a thorough investigation, God and his nature is still seen by some as belonging to a belief system.

Scholars, who believe in the theory of evolution, naturally think that this system of belief must also have undergone its own evolution. They say that ' animism ' (a belief in souls) slowly developed into ' polytheism ' (the belief in many Gods) and from there developed into a belief of one God.

Spiritual Beliefs Dictionary: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Zombie

Zombie

In Haitian and West African folk belief, a soulless corpse reanimated by a Voodoo preist, known as a bocor. A zombie moves listlessly in a trancelike state and does the bidding of the bocor. The term is apparently derived from Nzambi, a West African deity.

Most cultural anthropologists working in Haiti discount stories about zombies. Some researchers, however, claim that the stories are true and that a bocor's victims are administered a powder containing a powerful neurotoxin derived from the puffer fish. The powder is alleged to paralyze the victim into a deathlike state. The bocor later revives the victim. Pharmacologists who have tested samples of the alleged powder found little or no poison in them.

Zombie was originally a python god of certain West African tribes, and its worship was carried to the West Indies with the slave trade, and still somewhat survives in Voodoo ceremonies in Haiti and some of the southern states of the USA.

Spiritual Beliefs Dictionary: Spiritual Theosophical Dictionary on Sesha

Spiritual Beliefs Dictionary: Spiritual Theosophical Dictionary on Spiritualism

Spiritualism. In philosophy, the state or condition of mind opposed to materialism or a material conception of things. Theosophy, a doctrine which teaches that all which exists is animated or informed by the Universal Soul or Spirit, and that not an atom in our universe can be outside of this omnipresent Principle - is pure Spiritualism.

As to the belief that goes under that name, namely, belief in the constant communication of the living with the dead, whether through the mediumistic powers of oneself or a

so-called medium - it is no better than the materialisation of spirit, and the degradation of the human and the divine, souls. Believers in such communications are simply dishonouring the dead and performing constant sacrilege. It was well called "Necromancy" in days of old. But our modern Spiritualists take offence at being told this simple truth.

Spiritual Beliefs Dictionary: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Tachyon

Tachyon

A theoretical particle, or wave which travels faster than the speed of light. Tachyons exist in a theoretical world where objects have negative mass and time goes backwards.

Tachyon energy is used to scan "subspace", among other things, on the sci-fi fantasy program, Star Trek Voyager. So far, there is no empirical evidence for the existence of tachyons. "If they do exist, tachyons would be extremely difficult to utilize under our current understanding of physics," says NASA scientist Tom Bridgman.

Despite being theoretical and, if real, difficult to utilize, and if utilized, of unknown value, tachyons are the main ingredient in a feature line of New Age products that range from beads, belts and shoe inserts, to sweatbands, power pillows, massage oils and vials of tachyon water. A few enterprising New Agers claim that they know tachyons exist and they have harnessed its power.

Native American Spirituality

The religious beliefs, practices, and rituals associated with Native Americans.

Early Native American beliefs, though diverse, often shared common religious ideas. Many believed in a ÒGreat Spirit,Ó that nature in all of its forms possesses spirits, and that all life is interconnected.

Seasons and moons often were viewed as marking times of evocation for spirits and prosperity.

Some New Age believers promote revival of Native American spirituality, seeing obvious parallels with their own views.

Spiritual Beliefs Dictionary: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Spiritual Gifts

Spiritual Gifts

According to Christian doctrine, special abilities given by God to worthy believers. Every Christian has at least one

Following is a list of the gifts arranged in two groups.

  • The first are gifts that require supernatural intervention and are possessed only by true Christians.
  • The second are gifts that do not require supernatural intervention. Even non-Christians can have the second group of gifts.

A further issue is whether or not the gifts are still in use today. Some believe they ceased with the apostles and the completion of the writings of the Bible) and they are no longer needed for the building up of the body of Christ (Eph. 4: 12). Others believe the gifts are still in use but not in the pure apostolic sense. In other words, they are still in use but not in the same way possessed by the apostles. Instead, they are available to the believer if and when God decides it is beneficial to use them.

The first group of spiritual gifts are: Salvation, Word of Wisdom, Word of Knowledge, Faith, Healing, Miracles, Prophecy, Distinguishing of Spirits, Tongues, and Interpretation of Tongues.

The second group of spiritual gifts are: Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Giving, Leading, and Showing mercy.
