Hinduism Dictionary on Spiritual unfoldment
spiritual unfoldment: Adhyatma vikasa. The unfoldment of the spirit, the inherent, divine soul of man. The very gradual expansion of consciousness as kundalini shakti slowly rises through the sushumna. The term spiritual unfoldment indicates this slow, imperceptible process, likened to a lotus flower's emerging from bud to effulgent beauty. Contrasted with development, which implies intellectual study; or growth, which implies character building and sadhana. Sound intellect and good character are the foundation for spiritual unfoldment, but they are not the unfoldment itself. When philosophical training and sadhana is complete, the kundalini rises safely and imperceptively, without jerks, twitches, tears or hot flashes. Brings greater willpower, compassion and perceptive qualities. See: adhyatma vikasa, kundalini, kundalini, awakening, liberation, pada, sadhana, sadhana marga, San Marga, tapas.

| |  |  |  | Spiritual Awakening: Mythology Reveals Power of Descent
Studying the myths of various cultures leads to a better understanding of their social and religious underpinnings. By turning the myths inwards, inviting them into our lives and learning their language of imagery and symbolism, we learn more about ourselves. In almost every culture, the metaphor of descent serves as a powerful, sacred and mythic image for women. One of the earliest such accounts is the story of Inanna, the Sumerian goddess and Queen of the Upper World. She was worshipped in Sumer from the third millennium BCE (before the common era) to the first millennium BCE.

| | | | | |  |  |  | Spiritual Awakening: Spiritual Evolution Is The Key To Salvation
In a conversation with his consort Parvati, Shiva is believed to have said that through self-knowledge, one can attain salvation. People are born as human beings due to their past good samskaras, but to attain liberation they will have to attain self-knowledge. In ancient times, Parvati symbolised the spirit of enquiry. She would pose questions to Shiva, and Shiva's answers provided deep insight into the nature of spirituality. Parvati's questions are collectively known as the Nigama shastra. Shiva's answers are philosophical; they are also of great practical value.

| |  |  |  | Spiritual Awakening: Wisdom about AngelsI've
got my Guardian Angel watching over me;
Yet
I must still step carefully.
I've
been given the choice to decide;
But
if I'm not careful I just might slide.
The
same holds true for my spiritual walk.
I
must take time with Jesus daily; and talk.
Cause
if I'm not careful I could fall down;
Then
my feet won't be on solid ground.
So I
will live my life prayerfully;
And
take each step through life carefully.
Then
I'll be sure to keep
My
Guardian Angel
Watching
over me !

Critics of these programs, however, often hold that this reliance is ineffective, and offensive or inapplicable to atheists and others who do not believe in a salvific deity. Proponents of twelve-step programs argue that many atheists have been helped by the progr ...

|  |  |  | Spiritual Awakening: Spiritual Insight in Tagore's Works
One of Rabindranath Tagore's most memorable poems begins with the line: The world is insane with violence, every day there emerges a new kind of cruel conflict. He goes on to pray to the Almighty to instil love and wisdom into a world afflicted with myriad ills. This reflects the core of Tagore's spiritual humanism. Stressing the need for spiritual freedom, he referred to the uncontrolled excesses of passion that upset our balance and obscure the underlying harmony between the individual and universal spirit. This malady, which he called 'sin', distorts our freedom in the realms of matter, mind and spirit.
