Spirit World Dictionary

WITCHES CRADLE: A method of torturing Witches during the Renaissance and Middle Ages by binding the Witch in a garment or sack and suspending them from the limb of a tree. The continual rocking and swinging caused a profound disorientation and hallucinations and induced confessions. Used in a more contemporary context as a sensory deprivation technique to alter states of consciousness.

Dream: I am being menaced by a spirit

Description: You are being berated by someone who is deceased. You may feel terrified, guilty, resentful or abandoned. There are a number of variations to this jarring but rare dream theme. It may range from mild admonishment to an outright curse, or a sense of being haunted.

Frequency: Dreams of being menaced by a sprit are unusual. Some people have them occasionally, others only in dire conditions. They typically occur when you feel guilty, responsible for a death, ambivalent about the deceased, or extremely anxious about an impending or recent death.

Usual meanings: You feel alarmed, questioning whether you have done all that you could. You may question whether you are responsible for what occurred or could have done more to help. You may be questioning whether you did the right thing, feeling guilty or that you are being punished for something.

Questions to ask yourself:

• What happens during your dream?
• What is/was your relationship like with the person in the dream?
• What are your emotions in the dream?

TANGING THE BEES: Also tinging the bees. An act performed to cause bees that were swarming to settle. Examples from East Anglia include beating on a metal dustpan with the house key while in the immediate presence of swarming bees.

LIFTING: Additionally known as Faring Forth the Fetch, Traveling and being Oot and Aboot (transvection) and refers to the spiritual soul travel when the practitioner leaves their body and travels into other relative dimensions and worlds -- this form of reality is most often experienced by the Fetch.

GUISING:  Dressing in masqued/masked costumes for ritual use (traditionally incorporating sacred animals and other historical figures such as the Fool and Mari Lwyd) -- a derivative of *disguising* - normally seen at Misrule and Roodmas tides, those who dress in such a manner are known as Guisers or Guizards.

VERDELET: Also the Man in Green, Robinet, Robin Hood. French term for the aspects of the dual natured Horn God who represents both the primal nature of fertility that is seen as green and growing bright half of the year as well as the the obverse nature of the Man in Black or Harlequin who is a harbinger of the shadowy nature of decrease and death during the icy and freezing dark half of the year.

WHIST: Uncanny, silent, quiet, still, hushed, making no sound, or free from noise or disturbance. Also melancholy, sorrowful, cognate with wist as in wistful. Filled with a particular yearning or eldritch desire.

Spirit or Specter

• To see spirits in a dream, denotes that some unexpected trouble will confront you. If they are white-robed, the health of your nearest friend is threatened, or some business speculation will be disapproving. If they are robed in black, you will meet with treachery and unfaithfulness.
• If a spirit speaks, there is some evil near you, which you might avert if you would listen to the counsels of judgment.
• To dream that you hear spirits knocking on doors or walls, denotes that trouble will arise unexpectedly.
• To see them moving draperies, or moving behind them, is a warning to hold control over your feelings, as you are likely to commit indiscretions. Quarrels are also threatened.
• To see the spirit of your friend floating in your room, foretells disappointment and insecurity.
• To hear music supposedly coming from spirits, denotes unfavorable changes and sadness in the household.

GREY MAGIC: The noble art of obfuscation -- not revealing certain things about one's self or one's magical praxis in order to always keep those who may have thought they had a good indication who you were and what you were about unsteady and uncertain. Robert Cochrane claimed this gave him an advantage over those folks who assumed they had a definite bead on his character.

Anima (Latin) Air, wind, breath; secondarily life, soul, spirit, mind. A distinction, not generally observed, has been made between anima and animus, where animus is very close to the mentality or manas of theosophical terminology and anima is equivalent to the theosophic usage of prana.

Because equivalent to prana, it exists on seven planes, from the atman to the physical; and consequently there is an anima for every class of celestial being, anima not being limited only to human beings, beasts, and other beings having bodies of material substance. From anima came "animal," a being with a living personal soul. The vegetable and mineral kingdoms do not have it; but the earth has, and the earth was called an animal in consequence.

There was in classical times a distinction between three souls of the defunct: anima (pure spirit) went to the heaven world, while manes went to the nether regions, and umbra hovered on earth (IU 1:37). Anima is spoken of as pure spirit because the essence of prana is indeed spirit, as it is derivative directly form the atma-buddhic monad, although colored on the lower planes by its intimate connection with the personal ego or manes.
