Spiritual Dictionary on Spells
Spells: Spells are magical rituals. Magical rituals may also be spells (though there are many different types of rituals). A spell, then, is an act of magic in which energies are raised, “programmed” with a magical need (such as love or money) and directed to do their work. A few spells are secret; most are not. Secret spells aren’t more effective than their non-secret cousins. Any spell will work, provided that it’s been properly written, and provided that it’s properly performed. Spells usually consist of gathering together the needed items, charging them with power, and using them in some fashion. Herb spells are among the easiest to master. In this guide, I’ll use the words “spell” and “ritual” interchangeably. Also See: spell (See also: Spells, Magic, Shamanism, Paganism, Wicca)

SPELLS SPELLS Incantations or invocations intended to produce an external event for good or evil (for example, ABRACADABRA). To be most effective, they should be spontaneously created to suit the person or situation for which they are intended. Stock mantrams, over-used clichés, etc. (such as "Rain, rain, go away" or "May all your troubles be little ones" or "Go to Hell!") are generally useless. Spells too numerous to list involve quite bizarre mantras, sacrificed animal parts and extremely complicated rituals. With the egg of a black hen or the eye of a wolf buried during the full moon, secrets will be revealed, enemies punished and wealth increased. Curious substances and strange behavior of that sort are intended to conceal the genuine knowledge underlying enchantments. A good source for such spells can be found in Volume II of Christian's Histoire de la Magie, 1870. (See also: SPELLS, Magick, Mysticism, Mysticism Dictionary, Body Mind and Soul, )

 | | | Spell: Encyclopedia II - Spelling reform - Indonesian spelling reformsIndonesian underwent spelling reforms in 1947 and 1972, after which its spelling was more consistent with the form of the language spoken in Malaysia (i.e. Malay).
The first of these changes (oe to u) occurred around the time of independence in 1947; all of the others were a part of an officially-mandated spelling reform in 1972. Some of the old spellings, which were more closely ...

 | | | Spell: Encyclopedia II - Spelling reform - Portuguese spelling reformsThe original medieval spelling of Portuguese was mostly phonetic, but, from the Renaissance on, many authors who admired classical culture began to use an etymological orthography. In the early 20th century, however, spelling reforms in Portugal and Brazil reverted the orthography to phonetic principles. Subsequent reforms have aimed mainly at three objectives, with variable success: to eliminate the few traces of redundant etymological spelling that remained, to reduce the number of words marked with diacritics, and to bring the Brazilian spelling standard a ...

 | | | Spell: Encyclopedia II - Spelling reform - English spelling reformEnglish spelling contains many irregularities due to a number of factors. The large numbers words assimilated from other languages is one of them; an even greater cause is the fact that English began to be widely written and printed during the Middle English period. While English spelling was relatively systematic during the Middle English period, the shift to modern English involved undergoing a Great Vowel Shift and many other changes in phonology. The older, etymological spellings have been retained despite major shifts in phonology.
