Meaning "the beginning" of creation, and is symbolically illustrated in the book of Genesis of the Hebrew scriptures. The phrase of the title, "Neon Genesis" (neo meaning "new"), may suggest the beginning of a restart and/or re-order of creation, which reaches its climax in The End of Evangelion.
Genesis is never shown in the series or movies, nor is it ever referred to directly. However, it is assumed that this event took place.
