Oceanography Dictionary - sound
Definition and meaning of sound:
sound - a longitudinal pressure wave produced by the vibration of molecules in an elastic medium, which can be a liquid, solid, or gas. As the molecules are set in motion, they radiate outwards, colliding into other molecules (compression), then move apart farther than their equilibrium distance (rarefaction), travelling in this manner until they stimulate a sound receptor organ, such as an ear or tactile organ. The receptor translates the mechanical energy of the pressure wave to electrochemical energy of a nervous system, which stimulates a hearing or tactile sensation in the receiving organism

Hindu -
Hinduism Dictionary on Sound
sound: Shabda. As the darshana, or "seeing," of the Divine is a central article of faith for Hindus, similarly, hearing the Divine is spiritually indispensable. The ears are a center of many nadis connected to inner organs of perception. Gurus may when imparting initiation whisper in the ear of disciples to stimulate these centers and give a greater effect to their instructions. During temple puja, bells ring loudly, drums resound, conches and woodwinds blare to awaken worshipers from routine states of consciousness. Meditation on inner sound, called nada-anusandhana, is an essential yoga practice. Listening to the Vedas or other scripture is a mystical process. Traditional music is revered as the nectar of the Divine. See: Aum, nada, Siva consciousness.

 | | | Sound: Encyclopedia II - Music theory - SoundMusic theory describes how sounds, which travel in waves, are notated, and how what is sounded, or played, is perceived by listeners. The study of how humans interpret sound is called psychoacoustics, while the cognitive aspects of how perceived sounds are interpreted into musical structures is studied in music cognition. In music, sound waves are usually measured not by length (or wavelength) or period, but by frequency.
Every object has a resonant frequency which is determined by the object's composition. The different frequencies a ...

 | | | Sound: Encyclopedia II - Impedance matching - SoundSimilar to transmission lines, the impedance matching problem exists when transferring sound from one medium to another. If the acoustical impedance of the two media are very different, then most of the sound energy will be reflected, rather than transferred across the border.
Sound transfer from a loudspeaker to air is related to the ratio of the diameter of the speaker to the wavelength of the sound being reproduced. That is, larger speakers can sound louder and deeper than small speakers. Elliptical speakers act like large speakers le ...

 | | | Sound: Encyclopedia II - Iced Earth - SoundIced Earth's music is often described as Iron Maiden combined with 80's thrash metal. The most distinctive element of the band's sound is the stuttering right-hand gallop of rhythm guitarist Jon Schaffer, which sounds something like the 'eighth-note, two-sixteenth-notes' gallop made famous by Iron Maiden's bass player/songwriter Steve Harris (in such songs as "Run to the Hills", "The Trooper", and "Caught Somewhere in Time"), sped up tremendously and varied rhythmically. Overtop of this gallop are typically laid strong melodic hooks, sometim ...

 | | | Sound: Encyclopedia II - Super Street Fighter II - SoundSuper Street Fighter II featured an entirely updated soundtrack using Capcom QSound, sporting applied acoustics making for crisper music. Stereo sound was also implemented.
Several character voices were added, giving each character a unique knock-out cry, as opposed to the generic male and female audio samples of previous games.
Special attacks' audio samples no longer changed in frequency to denote the attack button used in executing the attack. With the old system, if Ryu executed a slow fireball, his voice would be ...

 | | | Sound: Encyclopedia II - Movie projector - SoundRegardless of the sound format, any sound represented on the film image itself will not be the sound for the particular frame it occupies. All optical sound formats must be offset from the image because the image is projected with intermittent motion. If the sound head on the projector was adjacent to the gate, the sound would be a jerky start-stop-start-stop and so on. Therefore the sound head requires continuous motion and will be located a certain number of frames before or after the gate.

 | | | Sound: Sangeet Marga - Path To Moksha
According to the Hindu view of creation, it was sound and not light that appeared first. In Vedic parlance it is called Nada Brahma or the Sound Celestial. Vedic rishis believed that the evolution of the Brahmand or universe was caused as a result of Bindu Visphot or an atomic explosion, that produced infinite waves of sound, which represent cosmicascent and expansion. The sound was a monosyllable: Om . Since Om is related to the beginning of the universe, Hindus consider it the most sacred syllable with which Vedic mantras commence.

 | | | Sound: The Divine Music Within UsDivine music, when you experience it,
brings with it intense and lasting bliss. How can one who has heard this divine
melody describe it to one who has not? Anyone who attempts to describe it would
have to use pale analogies. If we think of the most beautiful music we have
ever heard in this world, it still does not compare with the music known as the
Voice of God.
The divine music is playing within us all
the time. We dont hear it because no one has shown us the way to listen to this
inner music.

scriptures of ancient India - The VedasThe
Vedas
The Vedas
are the Divine scriptures of ancient India and in modern times can be traced as
least as far back as 12,OOO B.C. a lthough it is generally accepted tat the
Vedas appear at different times of the cosmic creation forte benefit of human
society. They are considered to be the revelations of the Divine nature, and
its relationship within and without us. "Mantra" is the term used to
mean Divine sound vibration or the word of God. There are teachings of mantras
(hymns), teachings of ritual, theology, and philosophy at the root of all the
vedic sciences. The point of all is the knowledge of the soul called "atma
vidya", being our real "self" and separate and distinct from the
material body , and the material world which surrounds us.

 | | | Sound: The Wavelength Of Celestial Sound
In most religious scriptures, Shabd or the Word is referred to as the creator of the universe. It is a current from the ocean of pure consciousness that is characterised by ethereal and sublime sound vibration. It is the all-pervading manifestation of God, the radiant sound current, and it is the connecting link between God and His creation. All the powers of nature depend on and work through Shabd.

 | | | Sound: The Healing Powers Of Ancient Chants
The sages who gave us the ancient Vedic mantras and hymns were evolved beings who had either attained or come very close to a state of pure consciousness. In their meditations they heard perfect words and sounds - sublime mantras, sacred wisdom arising from within. They passed this sacred wisdom on to their disciples by singing it. In those days all the scriptures were sung, and the rishis and sages understood that chanting the sacred word was an offering to God for the well-being of the earth and all its creatures. They knew that the human voice chanting sacred mantras has healing power and that these pure sounds actually replenish the universe, create harmony, and keep the universe healthy.
