Ethics in the Bible - The Divine command theory of ethics.
One familiar answer to the question of "Why is x morally right" (or wrong) is, "Because God says so." But why should we obey God?
It is easy to think of reasons as to why (assuming God exists) it might be prudent to obey God, out of fear of divine punishment. However, this is obviously a very different matter from ethics. We do not say that the emergence of a powerful ruler (e.g. Hitler) determines what is right and wrong in the moral sense. ...

| | | | Sodom: Encyclopedia II - Sodom and Gomorrah - Jewish viewsClassical Jewish texts do not specifically indicate that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because inhabitants were homosexual. Rather, they were destroyed because the inhabitants were generally depraved and uncompromisingly greedy. Rabbinic writings affirm that the primary crimes of the Sodomites were terrible and repeated economic crimes, both against each other and outsiders.
A rabbinic tradition, described in the Mishnah, postulates that the sin of Sodom was related to property: Sodomites believed that "what is mine is mine, and wh ...

Whore of Babylon - Protestant Reformation.
Some pre-Reformation writers and most of the Reformers themselves, from Martin Luther (who wrote On the Babylonian Captivity of the Church), John Calvin, and John Knox (who wrote The First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women) identify the Roman Catholic Church with the Whore of Babylon. This opinion influenced several generations in England and Scotland when it was put into the 1599 edition of the Geneva Bible. As a tradition, it co ...

| | | | Sodom: Encyclopedia II - Thrash metal - Beginnings1981 is seen by some fans as a critical year, though others cite earlier influences on the genre: The first riff of Black Sabbath's "Symptom of the Universe" (1975) is possibly one of the first thrash riffs, though their "Into the Void" and "Children of the Grave" (both 1971) were influential as well. Some point to another early example, Queen's "Stone Cold Crazy" (1974) (from their Sheer Heart Attack album), which was unusually heavy and fast for its time (and indeed for Queen as well), and ultimately covered many years later by Meta ...

| | | | Sodom: Encyclopedia II - Vampire fiction - Films and televisionVampires have been a film staple since the silent days. The Vampire (film) (1913, directed by Robert G. Vignola), also co-written by Vignola, is the earliest vampire film. The landmark Nosferatu (1922 Germany, directed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau) was an unlicensed version of Dracula based so closely on Bram Stoker's Dracula, the estate sued and won, with all copies being destroyed. (It would be painstakingly restored in 1994 by a team of European scholars from the five surviving prints.) By 2005, Dracula had been the s ...

| | | | Sodom: Encyclopedia II - Miss Marple - PersonalityWhen we first meet Jane Marple she is very much the stereotypical spinster of the last century — blue-eyed and frail, wearing a black lace cap and mittens, and constantly knitting. She is also a gleeful gossip and not especially nice. The first Marple novel, The Murder at the Vicarage sees a markedly different Marple to the one who would appear in later books, as she modernized and became nicer over the years.
A Murder is Announced (1950), Agatha Christie's fiftieth novel, is regarded by some as the best Miss Marple novel, a ...

| | | | Sodom: Encyclopedia II - Jahwist - Contrast with the ElohistThe Jahwist's story begins much earlier than the Elohist's, in fact, it begins at the beginning. It also includes general creation stories, such as that of creation itself, the flood, and the badly truncated, an ...
