Sing Dictionary: Origin And Significance Of The Term Hindu

That part of the great Aryan race which migrated from Central Asia, through the mountain passes into India, settled first in the districts near the river Sindhu, now called the Indus, on the other side of the river. The Persians pronounced the word Sindhu as Hindu, and named their Aryan brethren Hindus. Hindu is only a corrupt form of Sindhu.

Virgil's opening line of the Æneid: Arma virumque cano, || Troiæ qui primus ab oris ("I sing of arms and the man, who first from the shores of Troy. . .") displays an obvious cæsura in the middle of the line [this is of course not the middle of the verse, as the writer says, the caesura is the so called penthemimeres (or B1 or masculine caesura). the middle would be after the third (leaving apart, that a hexameter is katalecti ...

In The Sims, Sims sing campfire songs. One is to the tune of "She'll be Comin' 'Round The Mountain". Another is "Halleluia". From the beginning, Sims have been able to listen to Simlish music on their cheap boomboxes, fancy stereos, or over loudspeakers as they shopped. For The Sims 2 expansion packs University and Nightlife, rather than creating unique Simlish music, recording artists cut new performances of their songs with Simlish lyrics. Sing Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - The Beatles - Influences and music

As youths, the members of The Beatles were enthusiastic followers of Elvis Presley, first and foremost, and later, of British rock-and-rollers, notably Cliff Richard and The Shadows, whose stage presence and female following were often cited by the band as one of their inspirations to begin performing publicly. At the height of Beatlemania, John Lennon declared "Before Elvis, there was nothing." In comments recorded for the Anthology TV series all four band members spoke of him in glowing terms, with George Harrison (showing his knack ...

Sing Dictionary: Forgiveness Is A Virtue

Jains feel that the values like love, joy and peace can be achieved only through caring for others, understanding the pain of others and reaching out to other human beings. Anger, confusion, egoism and intolerance cause harm to one's self and to the 'other'. But the negative energies suffocate, choke, distress and disturb. Love should not be in the form of words alone. It should reach out to people who need peace, mercy, joy, comfort, sympathy, food, clothing and medicines. This is love in its active, not passive manifestation, but true love is forgiveness for self sake.

Sing Dictionary: Encyclopedia - Shiva Tandava Stotra

Indian tradition tells us that the intensity of demon-king Ravana's devotion to Lord Shiva drove him to create the Indian raga/melodic system so that he could sing Shiva's praises. In his hymn of praise, the Shiv Tandav Stotra, Ravana describes Shiva's power and beauty. Both the fourth and fifth quatrains of his hymn conclude with lists of Shiva's epithets as destroyer, even the destroyer of death itself. Alliteration and onomatopoeia create roiling waves of resounding beauty ...

Sing Dictionary: Gayatri - Mother Of All Mantras

Prayer is common to all religions. Love for God is universal, the mode or method of prayer could be different since everyone is free to pray to the divine power in their own way. Prayer should be acceptable to all, simple and easy to adopt in daily life. Generally, people follow the path of prayer practised in the family. The Gayatri Mantra and any other prayer should be recited with sincerity and for the love of God. Only then its true benefit can be derived.

Sing Dictionary: Encyclopedia - Dísir

In Norse mythology, the dísir (sing. dís) are a collective of divine female beings of whom little is known with certainty except that they are mentioned in concurrence with death and demise. Dís is believed to correspond to the idisi mentioned in the Old High German Merseburg Incantations as well as to ides, a poetic Anglo-Saxon synonym for "woman." Possibly, it is also etymologically related to the dhísanas, a group of female deities in the Yajur Veda. Dís could be u ...

Sing Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Guqin - Tuning

To string a qin, one traditionally had to tie a butterfly knot (shengtou jie 『蠅頭結』) at one end of the string, and slip the string through the twisted cord (rongkou 『絨剅』) which goes into holes at the head of the qin and then out the bottom through the tuning pegs (zhen 『軫』). The string is dragged over the bridge (yueshan 『岳山』), across the surface board, over the nut (longyin 『龍齦』 dragon gums) to the back of the qin, where the end is wrapped around two legs (fengzuSee also:

Sing Dictionary: Encyclopedia - De Brevitate Vitae

De Brevitate Vitae is a song in Latin that is a popular academic commercium song in many European countries. In many modern Western nations it is sung as an anthem at University graduation ceremonies. The melody is inspired by a medieval hymn by Strada, bishop of Bologna in 1267. Although this sounds very dignified, the song has been adopted by students as a form of prank and the lyrics are in fact pretty cheerful. It has been known as a beer-drinking song in German and Dutch (and also United Kingdom and even Australian) ...

Sing Dictionary: Bhagavata Purana's Eternal Krishna

The Bhagavata Purana and other works tell us stories of how the divine is always trying to break away from its divine fetters. When you are pervasive and omnipresent, how can you have the freedom to play? Being omnipresent, you are constantly watched by those who adore you, worship you and serve you. You need a disguise.

Sing Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Jean-Luc Picard - Personal life and interests

At the outset, a little attention needs to be paid to Picard's "Frenchness" as in fact portrayed by a (very) British actor. One may at least speculate that Paramount was actively intent on pleasing both British and French Trekkers (there are many of both) at one and the same time. Indeed, it seems more than likely that British fans of the show (subconsciously at least) disregard the Frenchness entirely and regard Picard as "one of their own". The makers do little to dissuade them from this, since, while the factual details of J-L P's life-hi ...
