Silvana Mangano: Encyclopedia II - Sicily - History

The autochthonous peoples of Sicily, long absorbed into the population, were tribes known to Greek writers as the Elymians, the Sicani and the Siculi or Sicels. Of these, the last were clearly the latest to arrive on this land and were related to other Indo-European tribes of southern Italy, such as the Italoi of Calabria, the Oenotrians, Chones, and Leuterni (or Leutarni), the Opicans, and the Ausones. It's possible, however, that the Sicani were originally an Iberian tribe. The Elymi, too, may have distant origins outside ...

Silvana Mangano: Encyclopedia II - Flo Sandon's - The beginnings

Her musical career began in 1944, during the war, when she debuted in a Red Cross charity show. Her stage name Sandon's came by chance - it was an oversight by the illustrator who prepared her first record cover. Celebrity came in 1952 thanks to the movie Anna directed by Alberto Lattuada and starring Silvana Mangano, Vittorio Gassmann and Raf Vallone. Flo Sandon's did not appear in the movie itself, but she performed two songs of the movie sound track, T'ho voluto ben and El negro Zumbon. Both were great hits. Nat King Cole liked so much T'ho voluto ben that a few years later he reco ...

Silvana Mangano: Encyclopedia II - Cinema of Italy - 1990 to Today

A new generation of directors has helped return Italian cinema to a healthy level since the end of the 80's. The sign-bearer for this renaissance is Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, for which Giuseppe Tornatore won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1990. This victory was followed two years later by another, when Gabriele Salvatores's Mediterraneo won the same prize. ... ...

Silvana Mangano: Encyclopedia II - Sicily - Sicilian people

The position of Sicily as a stepping stone of sorts in the center of the Mediterranean Basin has lent it strategic importance throughout history, resulting in an endless procession of settlers and conquerors. Of these, the earliest seem to have had the greatest demographic impact. Genetic research suggests that colonists from southern Europe (especially mainland Italy and Greece) have been most important in the peopling of Sicily: The tree allows a division of the populations into two main groups. We find Northern A ...
