Shastra: Encyclopedia - Shastra

Shastra is a Sanskrit word used to denote education/knowledge in a general sense. The word is generally used as a suffix in the context of technical or specialised knowledge in a defined area of practice. For example, Astra shastra means, knowledge about "Handling of weapons", Astra means weapons, and Shastra is their knowledge. Extending this meaning, the shastra is commonly used to mean a treatise or text written in explanation of some idea, especially in matters involving religion. In Buddhism, a shastra is often a commentary written at a later ...

Shastra: What is Vaastu Shastra?

Vaastu Shastra is the Indian science of space and architecture and how we may create spaces and environment that supports physical & spiritual health and prosperity.

Vaastu Shastra evolved during Vedic times in India. The concepts of Vaastu Shastra was transferred to Tibet, South East Asia and finally to China and Japan where it provided the base for the development of what is now known as Feng Shui.

Vaastu Shastra is the art and science of designing houses, offices, temples etc that swirl with good energy. Indian Maharajas and Moghul Emperors used Vaastu Shastra when they built their symmetrical palaces, artificial lakes, and geometric courtyards that thirstily absorbed positive energy.

Shastra: Role of Destiny

Vastu Shastra: Role of Destiny

All the defects, blasphemy and curses by sages on the house site should be expiated by performing suitable purification ceremonies and worships before one attempts to start the construction work of a house on such a site. Maya, the celestial architect, had explained the easy ways and means of identifying the nature of the soil. According to Maya, the master of the house who is going to construct the house should with his own hands dig out a square pit one cubit side and one cubit depth at the eastern direction or at the middle of the site (Brahmasthala).

Shastra: The Vaastu Shastras In The Modern Context

The popular abbreviation 'VaastuÕ has somehow come to stay in the social system, particularly in connection with business organisations. With a 15 year background in this field let me try to clarify the subject so that the really mysterious nature of energies and their impact on phenomena on the one hand, and the pseudo mysticism of irrational relationship between cause and event on the other may be better understood.

Shastra: Reinterpreting Vaastu

In India we must be grateful that the core beliefs, theoretical rigour and application of the Vaastu Shastras are still available, though in a depleted form. From the study of texts, dialogues with practitioners and field application of the concepts I have been able to reconstruct the overview of the Vaastu Shilpa Shastras and give a guideline for present day application. There is a great deal of resistance and deep feelings of distrust from the trained designers in the 'modern institutesÕ toward the assumptions and symbolism of the traditional paradigm. It is almost as if they feel threatened that their hegemony would be displaced. Are their fears valid? Is the basis of the Vaastu Shastras questionable in its present day application? Is it a meaningless mumbo jumbo in the 'scientificÕ climate of today?

Shastra: Defective Main Doorways

Vastu Shastra

One of the most important rules to be followed is not to have a marshy land across the maindoorway of the house. Honing such a marshy land across the maindoorway will lead its resident to rain. Allowing the drainage water to flow across the house will lead the resident to poverty. If an assemblage of people is forward talking infront of the house, or if a well is located in front of the house the residents of such a house will suffer from incurable diseases

Shastra: Vasthu in The Vedas

Vasthu in The Vedas

Each Veda has a subsidiary: ayurveda (knowledge of life) for rgveda, dhanurveda (knowledge of tools and weapon) for yajurveda, gandharvaveda (knowledge of arts) for samaveda and sthapatyaveda (architecture) for atharvaveda. In addition, puranas, nyayasastras, mimamsas and dharma sastras (smrtis) are also considered as upangas. Sthapatyaveda which is the subsidiary of atharvaveda is the subject of this discussion. Because it is the subsidiary of Veda, its authority is clear and undisputed.

Shastra: What is Vasthu?

 What is Vasthu?

Human body is under the influence of the nine Planets. In fact it is governed and controlled by all these nine planets. Dwelling place is known as GRAHA, and this graha is under the rule of vasthu, the Omnipotent Devtha (Divine Lord of men's dwelling place.) So there has to be an utmost harmony between the body (which is ruled by Nava Graha) and home (Graha which is under the influence of Vasthu. Vasthu Sasthra is the science which explains the rules of the harmony required.

Shastra: Energy and the Earth

The Vaastu Purusha who is the indwelling energy of the Earth itself, is first propitiated before any building activities are begun. This energy pervades the built space and enhances the life of the occupants. When the texts speak of not harming the energies they are offering guidelines for design, which safeguard the existing environmental patterns.
