Military history of Canada - World War I.
On August 4, 1914, Britain entered WWI by declaring war on Germany. The British declaration of war automatically brought Canada into the war, because it was still part of the British Empire. However, the Canadian government had the freedom to determine the country's level of involvement in the war. Canada eventually sent five divisions to fight on the Western Front.
In the later stages of the war, the Canadian Corps, like the Australian Corps, was regarded as among ...

| | | | Seven Years War: Encyclopedia II - Military history of Canada - Multilateralism and peacekeepingSoon after the end of the Second World War, the Cold War began. As a founding member of NATO and a signatory to the NORAD treaty with the US, Canada committed itself to the alliance against the Communist bloc. Canadian troops were stationed in Germany throughout the Cold War, and Canada joined with the Americans to erect defences against Soviet attack, such as the DEW Line. As a middle power, Canadian policy makers realized that Canada could do little militarily on its own, and thus a policy of multilateralism was adopted whereby Canada woul ...

| | | | Seven Years War: Encyclopedia II - Johann Hartwig Ernst Count von Bernstorff - PreludeEver since the conclusion of the Great Northern War, Danish statesmen had been occupied in harvesting its fruits, namely, the Gottorp portions of Schleswig definitely annexed to Denmark in 1721 by the Treaty of Nystad, and endeavouring to bring about a definitive general understanding with the House of Gottorp as to their remaining possessions in Holstein. With the head of the Swedish branch of the Gottorps, the crown prince Adolphus Frederick, things had been arranged by the exchange of 1750; but an attempt to make a similar arrangement with the chief of t ...

| | | | Seven Years War: Encyclopedia II - Military history of Canada - Conflicts with the United StatesWith the French threat eliminated, Britain's eastern seaboard colonies became increasingly restive. The American Revolution largely arose from their resentment of paying taxes to support a large military establishment, when there was no obvious enemy. This was augmented by further suspicions of British motives when the Ohio Valley and other western territories previously claimed by France were not annexed to the existing British colonies, who regarded these as just fruits of war, but were reserved for the British Crown. The American Revoluti ...

Military history of Canada - First Nations.
The first conflicts between Europeans and Native peoples may have occurred around 1006, when parties of Norsemen attempted to establish permanent settlements along the coast of Newfoundland. According to Norse sagas, the native Beothuk (called skraelings or skraelingars by the Norse) responded so ferociously that the newcomers eventually withdrew and gave up their original intentions to settle. Among later European settlers, the First Nations developed a reputati ...

Military history of Canada - Canadian militia.
With Confederation in place and the British garrison gone, Canada assumed full responsibility for its own defence; Britain undertook to send aid in the event of a serious emergency, and the Royal Navy continued to provide oceanic defence. Small professional batteries of artillery were established at Québec and Kingston. In 1883, a third battery of artillery was added, and small professional schools of cavalry and infantry were created. These were intended to provide ...

| | | | Seven Years War: Encyclopedia II - Tsushima Island - GeographyTsushima is considered a single island by the Japanese government, with an area of 696.26 square kilometres. Aso Bay (浅茅湾) is a deep sound in the center of Tsushima, which nearly divides the land of island into two parts connected by a narrow Isthmus. The northern area is known as Kamino-shima, and the southern island as Shimono-shima. Both sub-islands have a pair of mountains: Shimono-shima has Mount Yatachi (矢立山), 649 metres (2,130 feet) high, and Shira-dake, 512 metres (1,680 feet) high. | | | | Seven Years War: Encyclopedia II - Tsushima Island - Demographics and CultureThe population of the islands is about 41,000, consisting mainly of ethnic Japanese, with minority Filipino and Korean populations.
Professor Cho Kyeung-dal suggests that the local culture has experienced an intermingling of Japanese and Korean traditions over time, due in part to Tsushima's proximity to Korea. For example, Korean songs such as "Arirang" (or "Ariran") and "Chingu" are popular in the Tsushima Island. This has led to the creation of these unique festivals not found elsewhere in Japan, such as the Arirang Festival, established in 1964. Other features of ...

Tsushima Island - Early history.
Archeological evidence suggests that Tsushima was already inhabited by settlers from the Korean peninsula and Japan from the Jomon period to the Kofun period. According to the Sanguo Zhi, a Chinese historical text, a thousand families in Tsushima founded the Tsuikai kingdom (対海国). These families exerted control over Iki Island, and established trading links with Yayoi Japan. Since Tsushima had almost no land to cultivate, islanders earned their living by fishing and trading. Japanese mythology states that Tsushima was one of the eight original islands created ...

| | | | Seven Years War: Encyclopedia II - Second Anglo-Dutch War - The WarThe first encounter between the nations was, as in the First Anglo-Dutch War, at sea. The war started with the Battle of Lowestoft, where the English gained a great victory and ruled the seas for over a year. They failed to take advantage of this however. The Spice Fleet from the Dutch East Indies managed to return home safely, France (Louis XIV) and Frederick III of Denmark took the side of the Republic and for every warship the English built, the Dutch wharfs turned out seven.
