Selfless: Encyclopedia - Selfless Service
Selfless Service is a commonly used term in Sant Mat and Surat Shabd Yoga as well as other spiritual disciplines and in world religions such as Sikhism. The concept is similar to the Christian ideal of Charity as a form of love or devotion for one's fellow man. Because God is perceived as residing in the heart of others, serving other people (and in particular helping them to find God by way of a spiritual teacher) is considered an essential devotional practice. "Service before Self" was a motto by Sant Kirpal Singh which described this practice. A ...

Selfless: Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Selflessness

Selflessness The attribute of the atman, the essential self or selfhood; on the upward arc of evolution we strive to wean our lower or personal self from attachments to objects of personal desire and to achieve the universality of feeling which pertains to this divine essence (atman).

Without the altruistic intuition, no society, whether of animals or humans, could hold together. Instead of regarding selflessness as a lofty and difficult goal to be attained by climbing, we can regard it as an original "home" from which we have wandered.

Selfless: Beware the Minefield of the Mind

Selfless action is the outward expression of selfless love. When the heart is filled with love, it expresses itself in the form of unselfish action. One is a deep inner feeling and the other its outward manifestation.

Without deep, unconditional love, selfless actions cannot be performed. In the initial stages of our awakening, the actions we perform in the name of selflessness are not selfless, because the love we feel for ourselves is present in everything we do and say.

Selfless: Selfless Service And Sacrifice

After having won the Mahabharata war, King Yuddhishthira, the eldest of the Pandavas, performed the Ashvamedha Yagna in which he gave away his riches to the deserving.

Just then a half-golden mongoose sneaked in and began rolling all over the ground. It then looked at its fur and seemed disappointed. The mongoose said sadly, "Ah! This is no sacrifice."

Selfless: Selflessness Can Be A Huge Burden

If you are disappointed today about something, it does not mean that it is a permanent condition. There is always a tomorrow to look forward to.

If you refuse to be optimistic or hopeful for the morrow, you will find yourself getting dragged into a whirlpool of despair, which is in itself a generator of unhappiness.

Is there a secret, a magic formula for happiness? If there is, does it lie inside you or outside? Logically, it has to be inside you.

Selfless: Karma Yoga

Karma Yoga - The Yoga of Action

Karma yoga joins both the physical and mental aspects of Hindu philosophy to produce a single concept. It believes that the present relies on the past and that in turn, with your actions, you can alter the future. Selflessness is a primary requirement for karma practice. Steering your actions towards the good Ð saying good, thinking good, doing good will all facilitate selflessness. Acting this way eliminates egoistic and negative behaviour and enables you to influence your destiny.

Selfless: The Miraculous Venus Transit

The Venus Transit of June 8, 2004, is being heralded as the astronomical event of the year, but the profound significance of this celestial alignment will far transcend the expectations of orthodox astronomy.

Selfless: Illumined Teacher

Hindu Quotes: Illumined Teacher

Some realize the Self within them through the practice of meditation, some by the path of wisdom, and others by selfless service.

Others may not know these paths; but hearing and following the instructions of an illumined teacher, they too go beyond death.

Selfless: Climb the Mountain of Spiritual Awareness

Hindu Quotes: Climb the Mountain of Spiritual Awareness

For aspirants who want to climb the mountain of spiritual awareness, the path is selfless work; for those who have ascended to yoga the path is stillness and peace. When a person has freed himself from attachment to the results of work, and from desires for the enjoyment of sense objects, he ascends to the unitive state.

Selfless: Realize the Self

Hindu Quotes: Realize the Self

Every selfless act…is born from Brahman, the eternal, infinite Godhead. He is present in every act of service. All life turns on this law … Whoever violates it, indulging his senses for his own pleasure and ignoring the needs of others, has wasted his life. But those who realize the Self are always satisfied. Having found the source of joy and fulfillment, they not longer seek happiness from the external world. They have nothing to gain or lose by any action; neither people nor things can affect their security.

- Bhagavad Gita 3:15-18

Selfless: Practice of Meditation

Hindu Quotes: Practice of Meditation

These two paths, the light and the dark, are said to be eternal, lending some to liberation and others to rebirth. Once you have known these two paths, Arjuna, you can never be deluded again. Attain this knowledge through perseverance in yoga. There is merit in studying the scriptures, in selfless service, austerity, and giving, but the practice of meditation carries you beyond all these to the supreme abode of the highest Lord.

Selfless: Bhakti Yoga - - Path of Devotion

Bhakti yoga is the yogic pathway to self-realisation by catalysing and channeling your emotions into devotion or love with an attitude of total self-surrender.

Bhakti yoga is based on pure and selfless love, a strong sense of total surrender to the Supreme Intelligence guiding this universe and it comes straight from the heart.

But this attitude of surrender and love does not call for any complacence in action. Rather, your emotional fervor and enthusiasm is productively channeled into a feeling of love for another person, a favorite place, a rewarding type of work and so on and one may also develop a feeling of love for all humanity.

Selfless: Karma Yoga - Path of Action

"As you sow, so shall you reap" is an old and true saying. It points out the law of cause and effect which forms one of the fundamental laws of the Universe."

Karma Yoga is the path of detached action and selfless service. At this point, you may ask, how could action be detached if a goal or mission is to be accomplished!

Now, the secret of right activity is to do the action with full dedication and enthusiasm in the correct manner and mode of operation but you need not anticipate or be anxious about the consequences or result of this action.

Selfless: Krishna The Cowherd - The Perfect Avatar

Lord Krishna's influence on our lives far exceeds that of any other God-incarnate. Krishna is depicted not only as an embodiment of wisdom and selfless action, but also as a humane liberal and practical philosopher with foresight.

Krishna's mysticism and activism have greatly inspired poets, painters, writers, dramatists and dancers. The advice he rendered to a disheartened Arjuna at Kurukshetra - immortalised in the Bhagavad Gita - greatly influenced philosophers and continues to inspire millions of people worldwide.

Selfless: Do Good Naturally, Not Out of Duty

As a teenager I always carried some cotton, antiseptic and a bandage in my pocket. After all, someone could get hurt. One day, I was in a bus. A fellow passenger got hurt. Here was my chance to become a hero, I thought excitedly. Out came my kit. I applied some antiseptic on her bruise and bandaged it.

Another passenger looked at me and said: "Do you know, you have caused this bruise - indirectly." I was taken aback. He continued: "You waited for someone to fall and get hurt so that you could use your medical kit." My take on nishkaama karma, selfless action, had failed.

Selfless: Cosmic Consciousness Is Well Within Reach

Does an enlightened individual need to remain caged in the body? Why not get liberated from the physical? For seven days, the Buddha grappled with this dilemma. In the end, he decided that there was nothing personal about enlightenment - the knowledge should be shared with all for the benefit of humankind. He spent the next 50 years doing just that and all those who listened to him benefited greatly.

It is necessary for all of us to discover truth but once we find it, it should be shared freely with others. This will not only provide more insight, but also foster peace and happiness. The desire to share our discoveries with the world is normally fuelled by greed for either fame or money. Very few are selfless enough to share their discoveries freely for common benefit.

Selfless: Secular and Sacred Equality

Through the years, history shows that despite the existence of the caste system and its abuse by vested parties, the idea of equality has always ruled supreme in the minds of India’s sages. In fact, many of India’s most revered saints and philosophers came from the lowest strata of society.

Few are aware about the sacrifices made by some who, since ancient times, have silently worked to uplift human values.

Today, very few know of the invaluable contributions of the selfless humanists who have worked relentlessly for the uplift of the marginalised classes. The name of B R Ambedkar, however, is still fresh in public memory as the saviour of the Dalits. Atrocities continue to be heaped on the weaker sections, in one form or the other. Many saints and sages have stood by the Dalits and many of them were Dalits themselves. The work done by these saints are the real heritage of the Dalits.
