Satori: Encyclopedia II - Eastern philosophy - Syntheses of Eastern and Western philosophy

There have been many modern attempts to integrate Western and Eastern philosophical traditions. German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was very interested in Taoism. His system of dialectics is sometimes interpreted as a formalization of Taoist principles. Hegel's rival Arthur Schopenhauer developed a philosophy that was essentially a synthesis of Hinduism and Buddhism with Western thought. He anticipated that the Upanishads (primary Hindu scriptures) would have a much greater influence in the West than they ha ...

Satori: Encyclopedia II - Chan - History

According to tradition, the school was founded by the semi-legendary Indian or Persian monk Bodhidharma who, according to the Anthology of the Patriarchal Hall (952 CE), arrived in China c. 527 CE and taught at the Shaolin Monastery. Bodhidharma was believed in some versions of his legend to be the twenty-eighth patriarch in a lineage that extended all the way back to Shakyamuni Buddha. Bodhidharma is recorded as having come to China to teach a "separate transmission outside of the texts" which "did not rely upon textuality." His insight was then transmitted through a series of Chinese patriarchs, the most famous of whom wa ...

Satori: Encyclopedia II - Zen - Zen in Japan

The following Zen schools still exist in Japan: Rinzai, Soto, and Obaku. Originally formulated by the eponymous Chinese master Linji (Rinzai in Japanese), the Rinzai school was introduced to Japan in 1191 by Eisai. Dogen, who studied under Eisai, would later carry the Caodong, or "Soto" Zen school to Japan from China. Ikkyu revitalized Zen in the 15th century and greatly developed the tea ceremony. Obaku was introduced in the 17 ...

Satori: Encyclopedia II - Zen - Zen and Buddhism

Zen is a branch of Buddhism and as such is based on and deeply rooted in the Buddha's teachings. It is also very much the child of China and has some teaching derived from Confucianism and Taoism. The Zen branch calls itself the Buddha Heart School and traces its lineage back to the Buddha, with the Flower Sermon being the first transmission of the Dharma. It's common for daily chanting to include the lineage of the school, reciting the names of all "dharma ancestors" and teac ...

Satori: Encyclopedia II - Zen - Radical teachings

Some of the traditional Zen fables describe Zen masters using controversial methods of 'teaching', which modern Zen enthusiasts may have a tendency to interpret too literally. For example, though Zen and Buddhism deeply respect life and teach non-violence, the founder of the Zen Rinzai school, Linji said: "If you meet the Buddha, kill the Buddha. If you meet a Patriarch, kill the Patriarch." A contemporary Zen Master, Seung Sahn, has echoed this teaching in saying that in this life we must all 'kill' three things: first we must kill p ...

Satori: Encyclopedia II - Keanu Reeves - Biography

Reeves gained the notice of the critics in 1986's River's Edge, but his first major film role was in 1986, in the hockey movie YoungBlood, starring Rob Lowe. Reeves's first popularly successful film was Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, in 1989. Indeed, and perhaps unfortunately for Reeves, much of his subsequent portrayal in the press has been influenced by his comically airheaded character Ted in that film. His work in diverse roles span from small independent movies such as My Own Private Idaho to ma ...

Satori: Encyclopedia II - Existence of God - What is God? Definition of God's existence

What does it mean to assert "God exists"? In this context, the term "God" has typically been used to mean the monotheistic concept of a singular Supreme Being. One common definition of God assumes some combination of qualities such as omnipotence, omniscience and benevolence. This definition is not the only possible definition of "god". Many polytheistic religions have given the name "god" to several beings, all of whose existence is posited by these faiths. Mythologies affirm that these gods have various agendas, can tr ...

Satori: Encyclopedia II - Keanu Reeves - Trivia

Unlike many actors of today, Reeves is known to defer salaries if it means getting another actor for the film. He deferred his salary for The Devil's Advocate so Al Pacino could be cast, and The Replacements for Gene Hackman. Reeves once managed a pasta shop in Toronto. (Source: The Book of Useless Information, page 18, published 2002.) He is reportedly fond of chess, motorcycles, ice hockey, a ...

Satori: Encyclopedia II - History of Apple Computer - Pre-foundation

Before Steve Wozniak co-founded Apple, he was an electronics hacker. By 1975, he was working at Hewlett-Packard and helping his friend Steve Jobs design video games for Atari. Wozniak had been buying computer time on a variety of minicomputers hosted by Call Computer, a time-sharing firm run by Alex Kamradt. The computer terminals available at that time were primarily paper-based; thermal printers like the Texas Instruments Silent 700 were state of the art. Wozniak had seen a 1975 issue of Popular Electronics magazine on how to build your ow ...

Satori: Encyclopedia II - Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki - Career

While he was young, Suzuki had set about acquiring knowledge of Chinese, Sanskrit, Pali, and several European languages. Soyen Shaku was one of the invited speakers at the World Parliament of Religions held in Chicago in 1893. When a German scholar who had set up residence in Illinois, Dr. Paul Carus, approached Soyen Shaku to request his help in translating and preparing Oriental spiritual literature for publication in the West, the latter instead recommended his disciple Suzuki for the job. Suzuki lived at Dr. Carus’s home and worked wit ...

Satori: Encyclopedia II - Existence of God - Arguments for the existence of God

A dispute arose as to whether there are a number of proofs of the existence of God or whether all are not merely parts of one and the same proof (cf. Dr. C. Braig, Gottesbeweis oder Gottesbeweise?, Stuttgart, 1889). While all such proofs would end in the same way, by asserting the existence of God, they do not all start at the same place. St. Thomas calls them aptly (Summ. theol., I, Q. ii, a.3) Viæ; roads ...

This movement was a reaction against the conservative social norms of the 1950s, the political conservatism (and perceived social repression) of the Cold War period, and the US government's extensive military intervention in Vietnam. It is sometimes discussed as the inheritor of the "Beat Generation" sensibility of the late 1940s and 1950s. Opposition to the war was exacerbated in the US by the compulsory military draft. In one view, the 1960s youth rebellion largely originated on college campuses. The Free Speech Movement at the Univ ...

Satori: Encyclopedia II - André Chénier - Life

He was born at Istanbul, in today's Turkey. His father, Louis Chénier, a native of Languedoc, after twenty years in the Levant as a cloth-merchant, was appointed to a position equivalent to that of French consul at Istanbul. His mother, Elisabeth Santi-Lomaca, whose sister was grandmother of Adolphe Thiers, was a Greek. When André was three years old, his father returned to France, and from 1768 to 1775 served as consul-general of France in Morocco. Satori: Encyclopedia II - Zen - Zen and Western culture

Since the 1930s in the United Kingdom, and at least since the Beatnik movement of the 1950s in the United States, the West has had a growing interest in Zen. Often, it has been diluted or used as a brand name, leading to criticism of Western appreciation for Buddhism. However, there is some genuine interest as well. In Europe, the Expressionist and Dada movements in art tend to have much in common thematically with the study of koans and actual Zen. The early French surrealist René Daumal translated ...

Satori: Encyclopedia II - Existence of God - Arguments against the existence of God

There are many arguments which point out God's logically contradictory definitions, demonstrating his non-existence. For example, can God create a stone so massive he cannot lift it? Both possible answers destroy claims of God's omnipotence. (This is called the omnipotence paradox.) Claims of an omniscient God who stands outside of time and sees all of reality in one glance are destroyed by the fact that there is at least one thing such a being c ...

Satori: Encyclopedia II - Jack Kerouac - Life

Kerouac was born Jean-Louis Lebris de Kerouac, in Lowell, Massachusetts, to a family of Franco-Americans. His parents, Leo-Alcide Kerouac and Gabrielle-Ange Lévesque, were natives of the province of Quebec in Canada. Like many other Quebecers of their generation, the Lévesques and Kerouacs were part of the Quebec emigration to New England to find employment. Jack didn't start to learn English until the age of six. At home, he and his family spoke Quebec French. At an early age, he was profoundly marked by the death of his elder brother Gérard, later prompting him to wri ...

Satori: Encyclopedia II - Jack Kerouac - Career

Kerouac realized his desire to be a writer when he was in his teens, probably influenced by his father, a linotypist with a command of words. His unique style of writing wouldn't emerge until after his college years, after he wrote his first novel, "The Town and the City". He would often write while intoxicated with some substance, usually Benzedrine strips he would purge from over-the-counter inhalers, marijuana, and alcohol. He claimed that they---particularly "Bennies"---enhanced his writing by giving him the tremendous energy that this k ...
