San Juan: Encyclopedia II - Dominican immigration to Puerto Rico - Danger

Travelling illegally from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico can be as dangerous, if not more dangerous, as travelling from Mexico to the United States through the Sonora desert, for example. "Yolas" are extremely small boats made of wood, and sometimes, in order to make more profit, trip planners and ship captains put hundreds of people together in boats that are very unfit for such large amounts of travellers. Most illegal trips to Puerto Rico from the Dominican Republic begin in cities located at the Eastern ...

Chinatowns in Latin America - History. The first Chinese immigrants to Mexico were Philippine-born and brought by the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade. With the rise of anti-Chinese sentiment in Mexico in the 1930s under President Lázaro Cárdenas, many Chinese Mexicans — including individuals of mixed Chinese and Mexican descent — were forced out of Mexico and deported to China. Today, there are, fascinatingly, several Spanish-speaking Chinese-Mexican enclaves in China's Guangdong Province. Chinatowns in Latin ...

San Juan: Encyclopedia II - Colorado Plateau - Geology

One of the most geologically intriguing features of the Colorado Plateau is its remarkable stability. Relatively little rock deformation such as faulting and folding has affected this high, thick crustal block within the last 600 million years or so. Mountain building thrust up the Rocky Mountains to the north and east and tremendous, earth-stretching tension created the Bas ...

Christopher Columbus was the first European to discover the island in 1493. The island was populated by Taíno Indians prior to this and would be used by pirates as a refuge for more than 3 centuries. In 1875, a black English named Stevens was made the first governor of Culebra by the government of Vieques. The 1950s saw domestic expansion, and the airline began flying heavily between Santo Domingo and other Dominican cities, ...
