Lao-tze (Chin.). A great sage, saint and philosopher who preceded Confucius.

Idol. A statue or a picture of a heathen god; or a statue or picture of a Romish Saint, or a fetish of uncivilized tribes.

BODDHISATTVA

A saint who has forgone Nirvana and reincarnates in order to help mankind.

Murti: A representation of God or deity that has been sanctified by worship. A murti can be symbolic; a recognizable human figure, as in the image of a saint.

Ramdas (Raamdhaas). Maratha 17th century saint; author of work on religious duty; guru of the great King Sivaji.

Paramarshis (Sanskrit). Composed of two words: parama, "supreme", and Rishis,

or supreme Rishis - Saints.

Shaberon (Tibet, Tibetan). The Mongolian Shaberon or Khubilgan (or Khubilkhans) are the reincarnations of Buddha, according to the Lamaists; great Saints and Avatars, so to say.

Siddhas (Sanskrit). Saints and sages who have become almost divine also a hierarchy of Dhyan Chohans.

Tirthankara (Sanskrit). Jaina saints and chiefs, of which there are twenty-four. It is claimed that one of them was the spiritual Guru of Gautama Buddha. Tirthankara is a synonym of Jaina.

Jana-loka (Sk. The world wherein the Munis (the Saints) are supposed to dwell after their corporeal death (See Puranas). Also a terrestrial locality.

Hillel. A great Babylonian Rabbi of the century preceding the Christian era. He was the founder of the sect of the Pharisees, a learned and a sainted man.

Absorption of one god or cult by another, as many of the early Xtian saints and holidays were taken from paganism.

A “great soul,” a saint who has broad intelligence by dint of his full Krishna consciousness.

LHA

Tibetan gods. Also, a term for the highest spirits. Saints and yogins are sometimes respectfully addressed as "lhas". (See LOA).

Mahayana, Greater Vehicle Buddhism

A later, “heterodox” version of Buddhism which incorporates many Paleopagan deities from throughout Asia as Buddhas or Saints.

intercessory prayer:

1. Type of petitionary prayer wherein the petitioner is not the object or intended beneficiary of the request.
2. In Roman Catholicism, prayer in which one asks a saint or similar deceased person to intercede with God.

Nimbus (Latin). The aureole around the heads of the Christ and Saints in Greek and Romish Churches is of Eastern origin. As every Orientalist knows, Buddha is described as having his head surrounded with shining glory six cubits in width; and, as shown by Hardy (Eastern Monachism), "his principal disciples are represented by the native painters as having a similar mark of eminence". In China, Tibet and Japan, the heads of the saints are always surrounded with a nimbus.

Mahar Loka (Sanskrit). A region wherein dwell the Munis or "Saints" during Pralaya; according to the Puranic accounts. It is the usual abode of Bhriga, a Prajapati (Progenitor) and a Rishi, one of the seven who are said to be co-existent with Brahma.
