Rupert Sheldrake: Encyclopedia - Rupert Sheldrake

Dr. Rupert Sheldrake (born 1942) is a controversial British biologist and author. He developed a hypothesis of morphogenetic fields, and has produced related research and publications, on topics such as animal and plant development and behaviour, telepathy, perception and metaphysics. He has a popular public following, particularly because of his books aimed at the general reader, but he is shunned by many in the scientific establishment, who often consider his work as bordering on New Age thinking. Taking science "as a set of methods ...

Rupert Sheldrake: Encyclopedia II - Rupert Sheldrake - New Science of Life controversy
In 1981, Sheldrake trailed his hypothesis of formative causation in an article in New Scientist magazine. The piece was provocatively headlined: "Scientific proof that science has got it all wrong". An editorial introduction admitted that, to modern science, an idea such as Sheldrake’s was "completely scatty", but justified its publication on the grounds that first, "Sheldrake is an excellent scientist; the proper, imaginative kind that in an earlier age discovered continents and mirrored the world in sonnets," and secondly, "the science in his ideas is goo ...

Rupert Sheldrake: Encyclopedia II - Rupert Sheldrake - Later work

In more recent work Sheldrake has developed his ideas further and also conducted experiments (documented in subsequent books) on phenomena - particularly telepathy-related - which he believes could be explained by morphogenetic fields. Some of these experiments have apparently produced striking results, though many scientists remain unconvinced. Sheldrake encourages such experiments to be carried out by ordinary people, and many have been, including some conducted by BBC TV's popular science programme Tomorrow's World, and investigati ...

Rupert Sheldrake: Morphogenetic fields and Rupert Sheldrake

A morphogenetic field, according to biologist Rupert Sheldrake, is a biological and potentially social equivalent to an electromagnetic field that operates to shape the exact form of a living thing and may also shape its behaviour and coordination with other beings. This morphogenetic field provides a force that guides the development of an organism as it grows, making it take on a form similar to that of others in its species.

Rupert Sheldrake: Morphogenetic fields according to Robert Gilman, Terence Mckenna and Rupert Sheldrake

According to its founder, the biologist Rupert Sheldrake, a morphogenetic field, is an equivalent to an electromagnetic field that carries information only, not energy, and are available throughout time and space without any loss of intensity after they have been created.

Morphogenetic fields are created by the patterns of physical forms. They help guide the formation of later similar systems where a newly forming system "tunes into" a previous system by having within it a "seed" that resonates with a similar seed in the earlier form.

Morphogenetic fields can be used to describe how the human consciousness is shared. The Morphogenetic fields therefore play the main role in the idea that humanity at one point in time will go thru a dramatic collective shift in consciousness. A shift that will happen when the critical mass for a shift is reached, or in other words, when a certain number of spiritually awakened individuals are reached.

Rupert Sheldrake: : Morphic fields can now be measured scientifically!

In the laboratory of Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) at Princeton University/USA, research on the topic "mind-machine-interaction" has been ongoing since the late 1970s. As far back as the late 80s, extensive studies proved that diodes with white noise might be used as an interface between man and machine. Since 1998, worldwide about 50 such diodes with white noise have been measuring not only the consciousness of individuals but also the global consciousness of mankind within a study called "Global Consciousness Project". The results have been published and indicate synchronized reaction of all diodes to incidents of worldwide interest such as the war in Iraq, Lady Diana’s funeral or the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001 on the World Trade Centre in New York.

Rupert Sheldrake: Encyclopedia - Willing game

The willing game was an unusual telepathy-related parlour game popular in Britain towards the end of the 19th century. In the game, one person (let's call them P) leaves the room. The others agree on some object or simple action for P to identify or perform. P comes back into the room, and everyone else has to remain silent and still, but they think hard in order to try to 'will' P to do the agreed thing. P then tries to guess what is being willed, an ...

Rupert Sheldrake: Encyclopedia - Hundredth Monkey

The "Hundredth Monkey" is the name for a supposed phenomenon in which a particular learned behaviour spread instantaneously from one group of animals, once a critical number was reached, to all related animals in the region or perhaps throughout the world. Largely due to popularisation of this story, the "Hundredth Monkey" phenomenon is now thought by many to occur in human populations with respect to ideas and beliefs in general even thoug ...

Rupert Sheldrake: Encyclopedia - Extra-sensory perception

Extra-sensory perception, or ESP, is the name given to any ability to acquire information by means other than the five canonical senses (taste, sight, touch, smell, and hearing), or any other sense well-known to science (balance, proprioception, etc). Because the definition of sense is vague, the precise definition of extra-sensory is as well, but the term is generally used in reference to humans, to imply sources of information unknown to modern science. Telepathy, from the Greek τηλε, tele, "distant", and πάθεια, patheia, "feeling", is the claimed innate ability of humans and other creatures to communicate information from one mind to another, without the use of extra tools such as speech or body language. Considered a form of extra-sensory perception or anomalous cognition, telepathy is often connected to various paranormal phenomena ...

Rupert Sheldrake: Encyclopedia II - Morphogenetic field - Research background

British biologist Rupert Sheldrake posited a theory of morphogenetic fields that has become well-known for the criticism and skepticism directed towards it by prominent members of the scientific community. Sheldrake trained as a plant physiologist and became interested in the way that living things took on their form. In particular, he was interested in how what began as a single cell that split into identical copies eventually changed to take on s ...

Rupert Sheldrake: Encyclopedia II - Novelty Theory - Criticisms

There are several criticisms of Novelty Theory. Most contend that it is a sophistry based on a form of irrational scientism with pseudo-scientific premises and reasoning. One criticism in this vein is that Novelty is not defined in natural units. Another is that the supporting, corroborative arguments are based on subjective historical analysis. McKenna was adept at this, and Rupert Sheldrake complained that the theory required his personality for its demonstration. Another criticism is that the ...

Ganzfeld experiments have received widespread attention in recent times, and some believe they provide strong experimental evidence. Other experiments have been conducted by controversial biologist Rupert Sheldrake, who claims strong results. Many writers and artists who did not use the word "integral" to refer to their theories nonetheless are considered by theorists to act, think or theorize in an integral way. These include contemporary thinkers like Jurgen Habermas and Rupert Sheldrake, and historical figures like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Gandhi. The following writers contributed essential ideas to integral theory: James Mark Baldwin, American psychologist who described the Baldwin effect. Pierre Teilhard ...
