It combines prayer and meditation centered around sequences of reciting the Lord's Prayer followed by ten recitations of the "Hail Mary" prayer; one such sequence is known as a decade. Rosary: Encyclopedia II - Rosary - Rosary beads

A set of Rosary beads usually contains 50 beads in groups of ten (a decade), with an additional large bead before each decade. Some beads have been known to have one hundred or one hundred and fifty. These numbers were chosen to match the number of psalms, or a third or two-thirds of them. The beads were traditionally made from the seeds of the "bead tree", but are now more usually made of artificial materials. In a common form, the beads are true olive seeds; in past times there was a respectable trade in Rosaries made with ol ...

Rosary: The Tradition of Harmonious Living - Karmapa

Karmapa comes from the word karma or karmaka, which means activity. The Karmapas are the first to have realised successive reincarnations. This unbroken succession of masters who have preserved and transmitted the instructions of the Karma Kagyu tradition is referred to as the 'Golden Rosary".

Hence in the Kagyu lineage and practice, the oral teachings and the master-disciple relationship are of supreme significance.

Rosary: Touch Base with God Through Atma Vidya

Sri Sathya Sai Baba is among those realised souls whose wisdom cuts across all barriers of race and religion, aimed only at restoring dharma and establishing the unity of faiths and peoples under the common banner of universal love and brotherhood.

However, to widen spirituality's reach beyond retreats and rosaries, it has to be made to touch all of life and divinise every activity. For this, the quest for atma vidya or self-knowledge is essential in a human being, for it awakens him to his inherent divinity and also promotes reverence and respect for all creation.

Rosary: Encyclopedia II - Rosary - Origins of the Rosary

Prayer beads are also found in many other religions (notably Hinduism, where the practice appears to have started), and some have been found dating back to antiquity. Similar prayer counters (originally using knotted ropes) date to about the fourth century, when they were used to pray the Jesus prayer. Other counting methods, such as pebbles or pegboards, were also used by the early Desert Fathers [3]. According to tradition, in 1214 the Virgin Mary gave to St. Dominic the basic form of the Rosary as it is known today, with minor vari ...

Rosary: Encyclopedia II - Rosary - Origins of the Rosary

It is said that when Roman explorers came into India and encountered the Japa mala, they heard jap mala instead of japa mala. Jap means "rose", and the mala was carried back to the Roman Empire as rosarium, and into English as rosary. However, this etymology seems unlikely because of the dating. According to the 1911 edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, "Thomas of Chantimpre, who wrote about the middle of the 13th century, first mentions the word 'rosary' (De apibus, ii. 13), using it apparently in a mystical sense as Mary's rose- ...

Rosary: Encyclopedia - Anglican prayer beads

Sometimes known as Anglican "rosaries", Christian prayer beads, or ecumenical prayer beads, Anglican prayer beads are a loop of strung beads which people use as a focus for prayer. They were developed by the Rev. Lynn Bauman in the mid-1980s. The Anglican rosary consists of 33 beads divided into four groups of seven. This signifies wholeness or completion in the faith, the days of creation, and the seasons of the Church year. These are called "weeks", in contrast to the Catholic r ...

Mala itself is a Sanskrit term meaning 'garland' or 'necklace'. Japa mala - Use of a Mala. Mantras are often repeated hundreds or even thousands of times. Rosary: Encyclopedia - Calendar of saints

The calendar of saints is a traditional Christian method of organising a liturgical year on the level of days by associating each day with one or more saints, and referring to the day as the saint's day of that saint. The system arose from the very early Christian custom of annual commemoration of martyrs on the date of their death. As the number of recognized saints increased during Late Antiquity and roughly the first half of the Middle Ages, eventually every day of the year had at least one saint who was commemorated on that ...

Rosary: Encyclopedia II - Presentation of Jesus at the Temple - Scripture

The event is described in the Gospel of Luke (2:22-40). According to the gospel, Mary and Joseph took the baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem forty days after his birth to dedicate him to God, in line with Jewish law of the time. Upon bringing Jesus to the temple, the family encountered Simeon; the gospel records that Simeon had been promised "he should not see death before he had seen the Messiah of the Lord." (Luke 2:26) Simeon prayed the prayer that would become known as the Nunc Dimittis, or Canticle of Simeon, and prophesied regarding Jesus. The prophetess Anna (Bible) was als ...

The Desert Fathers (third-fifth century) used knotted ropes to count prayers, typically the Jesus Prayer ("Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner"). Rosary: Encyclopedia II - Prayer beads - Buddhism

For main article, see Buddhist prayer beads Prayer beads or Japa Malas are also used in many forms of Mahayana Buddhism, often with a lesser number of beads (usually a divisor of 108). In Pure Land Buddhism, for instance, 27 beads rosaries are common. In China such rosaries are named "Shu-Zu" ("Counting Beads"); in Japan, "Juzu". These shorter rosaries are sometimes called 'prostration rosaries', because they are easier to hold when enumerating repeated prostrations. In Tibetan Buddhism, often larger malas are used of for example 111 beads: when counting, they calculate one mala as 100 mantras, and the 11 extra are ...
