Ric Flair - NWA/WCW.
After three years with AWA, Flair joined the NWA affiliated Jim Crockett Promotions based in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. On the rise, he suffered a severe back injury in a October 4, 1975 plane crash in Wilmington, North Carolina which a Mr. James Watts pulled Flair out of the plane. Doctors told Flair that he would never wrestle again but Flair proved them wrong by returning to active wrestling the next year. Flair went as far as suing the estate of the pil ...

 | | | Ron Garvin: Encyclopedia II - Jim Crockett Promotions - Mid Atlantic Championship WrestlingIn 1973, the younger Crockett took over the territory after his father retired. He decided to change the territory's name from ESCW to Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling or MACW. He managed to arrange television tapings at WRAL in Raleigh, an agreement that would last until 1981. The shows were syndicated throughout the territory.
During this period MACW had a working agreement with Frank Tunney's Maple Leaf Wrestling in Canada that allowed Crockett to co-promote shows north of the border, while MLW talent would occasionally appear in Mid Atlantic. These combined to make Mid Atlantic p ...

 | | | Ron Garvin: Encyclopedia II - American Wrestling Association - HistoryUntil the 1980s, the AWA was considered one of the top wrestling companies in the world. Verne Gagne had been its biggest star even before he took control of the company, and his position at the top only solidified with him as owner. Feuding against Gene Kiniski, Dr. Bill Miller, Fritz Von Erich, Dr. X (Dick Beyer under a mask), The Crusher, Ray Stevens and Nick Bockwinkel, he won the AWA World Heavyweight Championship 10 times before retiring from in-ring competition in 1981. Gagne was a former amateur-wrestling champion who had earned a sp ...

 | | | Ron Garvin: Encyclopedia II - Barry Darsow - OverviewHe is best known for his portrayal of Smash in the popular 1980s WWF tag team, "Demolition". Under this character, he won the WWF World Tag Team title three times from 1988-1990. After the breakup of Demolition, he was retooled as Repo Man a wrestling repossession expert, portrayed as a shifty, suspicious figure complete with a black bandit mask.

 | | | Ron Garvin: Encyclopedia II - Ric Flair - ControversyRic Flair has been the subject of controversy. In 2004, Flair engaged in an off-screen rivalry with Bret Hart, in which both claimed to be the best wrestler of all time and accused each other of performing the same routines in most of their matches. Hart responded that Flair had spent the majority of his career in the NWA/WCW which he stated "is and always has been second rate to the WWF". Flair spent two years in the WWF prior to 2001, losing th ...

 | | | Ron Garvin: Encyclopedia II - Ric Flair - LegacyDespite his age and his less-than-chiseled physique, Ric Flair can still take on wrestlers half his age. Even though he is long past his prime as a "main-eventer," he still serves a purpose by getting in the ring and making younger wrestlers look good. Flair is over in the ring due mostly to his in-ring antics, including cheating ways (earning him the distinction of being "the dirtiest player in the game"), his trademark strut a ...
