 | | | Roman Catholic Church: Encyclopedia II - Roman Catholic Church - TerminologyRoman Catholic Church is a term that other Christian Churches often, though by no means exclusively, use for this Church. The Church itself too accepts this description in its relations with other Churches, but normally calls itself the Catholic Church. It has also sometimes, because of the centrality for it of the see of Rome, sometimes applied the adjective "Roman" to itself in its entirety even in internal documents, as when, at the start of chapter 1 of the First Vatican Council's Dogmatic Constitution on the Catholic Faith ...

 | | | Roman Catholic Church: Encyclopedia II - Coadjutor bishop - Roman Catholic ChurchIn the Roman Catholic Church, a coadjutor bishop is a special kind of auxiliary bishop. Unlike auxiliary bishops, coadjutors are given the automatic right of succession to the episcopal see, meaning that when the diocesan bishop they are assisting dies, retires, resigns, or is reassigned, the coadjutor automatically becomes the next bishop of the particular church. Until then, the diocesan bishop appoints the coadjutor to act as vicar general.
In modern church practice, the appointment of a coadjutor is usually done in cases where a d ...

 | | | Roman Catholic Church: Encyclopedia II - Ecclesiastical court - Roman Catholic ChurchRoman Catholic courts are governed by the Code of Canon Law in the case of the Western Church (Latin or Roman Rite), and the Code of Canons of the Oriental Churches in the case of the Eastern Church (Byzantine, Ukrainian, Maronite, Melkite, etc., Rites). Both systems of canon law recently underwent massive revisions, resulting in the new code for the Latin Rite in 1983, and the compilation for the first time of the Eastern Rite Code in 1991.
Briefly, in each diocese the bishop (or "eparch" in the Eastern Rites) is the legislator, admi ...

 | | | Roman Catholic Church: Encyclopedia II - Primate religion - Roman Catholic ChurchIn the Western Church, a Primate is an archbishop (or rarely a suffragan or exempt bishop) of a see (called a primas) which confers precedence over the other bishops of his own province, or over a number of provinces (possibly part of a province), such as a 'national' church in (historical) political/cultural terms. This precedence gives no additional authority over these other bishops, such as that exercised by a Metropolitan bishop.
The term is generally found in the older Catholic countries, and is now purely honorific, enjo ...

Main articles: Primacy of Simon Peter, Primacy of the Roman Pontiff
In Roman Catholic tradition, Peter is considered the first bishop of Antioch, and later bishop of Rome and therefore the first pope. The first epistle ends with "The church that is in Babylon, chosen together with you, salutes you, and so does my son, Mark." (1 Pet 5:13), but Babylon has sometimes been taken figuratively to mean Rome. The preterist view of the Book of Revelation concludes that Babyl ...

 | | | Roman Catholic Church: Encyclopedia II - State funeral - Roman Catholic ChurchWhen the pope dies, the officials in Vatican City begin a vigorous series of rituals dating back to the middle ages.
After the initial determination of his death, made by calling his name three times without response, the Camerlengo ("Cardinal Chamberlain" is the English title) declares him dead, orders the papal offices and apartment sealed, and destroys the pontiff's signet ring (the Ring of the Fisherman) and seals with the silver hammer. The Pope's body is initially moved to the Clementine Hall in the Apostolic Palace, wher ...

The Nicene Creed and the Apostles' Creed, which are accepted by all major Christian denominations, can be considered a fundamental core of the Catholic Church's beliefs. However some Christian denominations have developed a different understanding of many central issues concerning Christ's role in the Church and of the salvation of believers that vary greatly from the Church's historic teachings. The Catholic Church has published a detailed exposition of its ...
