Ringworld: Encyclopedia II - Megastructure - Existing megastructures

It is debatable whether any exist today. While there are a structures on earth that meet the megameter dimension requirement, such as, The Great Barrier Reef, at 2,000 km in length The Great Wall of China is a human-built megastructure, 6,700 km in length. neither of these examples satisfies the self-support requirement, making their status as megastructures open to debate. Networks of roads or railways, and collections of buildings (cities and associated suburbs), are usually not considered megastructures, despite frequently qualify ...

Ringworld: Encyclopedia II - Klemperer rosette - Misuse and misspelling

The term "Klemperer rosette" (often mis-spelled "Kemplerer rosette") is often used to mean a stable configuration of three or more equal masses, set at the points of an equilateral polygon and given an equal angular velocity about their center of mass. Klemperer does indeed mention this configuration at the start of his article, but only as an already known set of stable systems before introducing the actual rosettes. In Larry Niven's novel Ringworld, the Puppeteers' "Fleet of Worlds" is arranged in such a configu ...

Ringworld: Encyclopedia II - Kardashev scale - Usage and examples

Human civilization is currently somewhere below Type I, as it is able to harness only a portion of the energy that is available on Earth. The current state of human civilization has thus been named Type 0. Although intermediate values were not discussed in Kardashev's original proposal, Carl Sagan argued that they could easily be defined by interpolating the values given above. He calculated humanity's current civilization to be 0.7. He used a powe ...

Ringworld: Encyclopedia II - Planets in science fiction - Fictional planets

Authors have created thousands of fictional planets. Most of them are nearly indistinguishable from Earth, which is why Brian M. Stableford calls them "Earth-Clones". In these, differences with Earth life are mostly social (like Barrayar in the science fiction of Lois McMaster Bujold). More physically unusual planets have been depicted in hard science fiction books. For the Star Trek universe, a detailed planetary classification system has been devised.

The setting is a distant future based on extrapolation of as much hard science as Niven had available. Specifically, it's the 29th century. "Known space" (also the commonly used title for Larry Niven's future history science fiction series) is about 80 light years in diameter with 10,000 stars, including Human Space (40 light years diameter, 524 stars in 357 systems, 30 billion humans, 2/3 on Earth), as well as neighbouring Alien civilisations. Important Alien civilisations include the Puppeteers, paranoid pacifist herbivore centaurs, and th ...

Ringworld: Encyclopedia II - Shared universe - Amateur examples

The Internet boom in the 1990's made it possible for amateur authors with similar interests to write stories in the same shared universes. Since these authors mostly came from the role-playing game, furry, and fanfiction geek subcultures, the resulting shared universes tend toward those themes and genres most prevalent in those subcultures. While professional/corporate shared universes usually attempt to maintain overall continuity, the sheer number of amateur writers working in any given shared universe make for less stringent contin ...

Ringworld: Encyclopedia II - Startopia - Alien Races

Amusingly, every alien race in Startopia serves an in-game function, as well as a "theme". Startopia - Groulien Salt Hogs. Short but proud, Salt Hogs are considered the working class race of the game. They are the simplest to appease, needing basic facilities to be kept happy. Living on a planet created by a long-dead race, these aliens are mechanically inclined. As such, they are the only alien race able to produce and recycle materials in your station. Their speech is similar to that of a pig. ...

Ringworld: Encyclopedia II - Superconductivity - Elementary properties of superconductors

Most of the physical properties of superconductors vary from material to material, such as the heat capacity and the critical temperature at which superconductivity is destroyed. On the other hand, there is a class of properties that are independent of the underlying material. For instance, all superconductors have exactly zero resistivity to low applied currents when there is no magnetic field present. The existence of these "universal" properties imply that superconductivity is a thermodynamic phase, and thus possess certain d ...

Roman Hispalis, in the province of Hispania Baetica, became ʾIšbīliyyah (Arabic أشبيليّة) under the Moors. Though Greeks and Romans repeated a founding myth connected with Heracles' visit to the Hesperides the historical site was occupied by the Tartessos in the 8th or 9th century BCE. Later it was a trading colony occupied by the Phoenicians and the Carthaginians, who destroyed the city in 216 BCE. In 206 BCE, Scipio Africanus founded Italica nearby, to settle his wounded veterans, and be ...
