Rhodes: Encyclopedia II - Thrasybulus - The Coup of 411 BC

In 411 BC, in the wake of the Athenian defeat in Sicily, aristocrats at Athens who had long desired to overthrow the democracy began to work towards that goal. The leaders of this movement began their conspiracy at Samos, where Thrasybulus was stationed as a trierarch, and they conspired with aristocrats in that city to overthrow the democracy there as well[1]). Upon their return to Athens, the conspirators succeeded in ending democratic rule and imposing a narrow oligarchy of 400 rulers. At Sa ...

Rhodes: Encyclopedia II - The Guns of Navarone - Principal cast:

The film was directed by J. Lee Thompson after original director Alexander Mackendrick (best-known for the small, quirky comedies he directed for Ealing Studios) was fired by Carl Foreman due to "creative differences." The Greek island of Rhodes provided locations, and Quinn was so taken with the area that he bought land there in an area still called Anthony Quinn Bay. The film was a major box office success and the top grossing film of 1961. As a result, MacLean reunited Mallory, Miller, and Andrea in Force 10 From Navarone ...

Rhodes: Encyclopedia II - Helios - Greek mythology

The best known story involving Helios is that of his son Phaeton, who drove the sun chariot to his own disaster. Helios was sometimes referred to with the epithet Helios Panoptes ("the all-seeing"). The names of the horses were Pyrois, Eos, Aethon and Phlegon. Helios was worshipped throughout the Peloponnesus, and especially on Rhodes (an island he pulled out of the sea), where annual gymnastic tournaments were held in his honor. The Colossus of Rhodes was dedicated to him. Helios was often depicted as a haloed youth in a chariot, wearing a cloak and with a globe and a whip. Roo ...

Rhodes: Encyclopedia II - Siege of Malta 1565 - The siege

On May 18th 1565, the Ottomans, having decided to remove the Knights from their base once again, landed in Malta with an attack force. Balbi in his account of the siege gives the force that sailed from the Levant to attack Malta as 28,000, supplemented by forces from Algiers and Tripoli bringing the total invading force to 48,000 men. Spies in Constantinople saw the preparations and got word back in time for the Christians to organize defence. Balbi's numbers should be treated with caution however, as Balbi was a soldier serving with the de ...

Rhodes: Encyclopedia II - String Cheese Incident - The band's evolution

After a few years of playing local ski resorts and private functions, the band agreed that it was time to get serious with regards to their music, and formed the independent record label SCI Fidelity, on which they released their first album, Born on the Wrong Planet. At this point in their careers, the band displayed the motivation to play strong, melody-driven music that allowed room for live expansion and improvisation. Instrumentals and covers constituted half of the album, allowing much room to display musical virtuosity and even ...

Rhodes: Encyclopedia II - Teutonic Knights - History

The order was formed at the end of the 12th century in Palestine to give medical aid to pilgrims at the holy places. They received Papal orders for crusades to take and hold Jerusalem for Latin Christianity. They were based at Acre. When the mission of the order in Palestine was nearing its end, the Teutonic Knights moved their headquarter to Venice and offered their services to Christian rulers confronted with hostile non-Christian neighbors. In 1211, Andrew II of Hungary accepted their services and granted them the district of Burzenland i ...

Rhodes: Encyclopedia II - Simi - History

In Homer's Iliad the island is mentioned as the domain of King Nireus, who fought in the Trojan War on the side of the Greeks. Thucydides writes that during the Peloponnesian War there was a Battle of Syme near the island in January, 411 BC, in which an unspecified number of Spartan ships defeated a squadron of Athenian vessels. Little is known of the island until the 14th century, but archaeological evidence indicates it was continuously inhabited, and ruins of citadels suggest it was an important location. It was first part of the Roman Empire and then the Byzantine Empire, until its conquest by ...

Rhodes: Encyclopedia II - Cleomedes - On the Circular Motions of the Celestial Bodies

The book for which Cleomedes is known is a fairly basic astronomy textbook in two volumes. His purpose in writing seems to have been as philosophical as it was scientific--he spends an extensive amount of time criticizing the (admittedly fallacious) scientific ideas of the Epicureans (Cleomedes appears to have been a dedicated Stoic). Cleomedes' book is criticized by most modern astronomers as being poorly written--it is valued primarily for preserving, apparently verbatim, much of Posidonius' writings on astronomy (none of Pos ...

While the Reconquista, the centuries long fight to reconquer the Iberian peninsula on the Arabo-Barbaresque Moors (who called it al-Andalus), fills all the criteria for crusades, it is not customary to call the resulting Catholic principalities crusader states. Rhodes: Encyclopedia II - Dodecanese - History

The Dodecanese have been inhabited since prehistoric times. In the oldest historic period, they formed part of the Minoan civilization for several millennia. Following the downfall of the Minoans, the islands were ruled by the Achaeans from circa 1400 BC, until the arrival of the Dorians circa 1100 BC. It is in the Dorian period that they began to prosper as an independent entity, developing a thriving economy and culture through the following centuries. By the early Archaic Period Rhodes and Kos emerged as the major islands in the group, an ...
