 | | | Reza Abbasi: Encyclopedia II - Mashhad - HistoryThe city was founded around 823 CE, and its name derives from mashhad-e-reza, "place of martyrdom". It is a reference to the death of Imam Reza, the Eighth Imam of Shi'ite Islam, who is believed by members of the Shi'ia sect to have been poisoned there upon orders of Caliph Al Ma'mun. Before his death the place was a small village by the name of Sanabad. A shrine was built there to commemorate the Imam, and gradually the town grew around it. Among the first major buildings was a mausoleum built by Sultan Mahmood Ghaznavi. Today the ho ...

 | | | Reza Abbasi: Encyclopedia II - Iranian art - The Persian Fine Arts
Iranian art - The Persian Rug.
See main article: Persian Rug
The art of carpet weaving in Iran has its roots in the culture and customs of its people and their instinctive feelings. Weavers mix elegant patterns with a myriad of colors. The Iranian carpet is not unsimilar to the Persian garden: full of florae, birds, and beasts.
The colors are usually made from wild flowers, and are rich in colors such as burgundy, navy blue, and accents of ivory. The proto-fabric is often washed in tea to sof ...

 | | | Reza Abbasi: Encyclopedia II - Bisexuality - Bisexuality in historyHistorical and literary records from most literate societies indicate that male bisexuality was common and indeed expected. These relationships were generally age-structured (as in the practice of pederasty in the Mediterranean Basin of antiquity, or the practice of shudo in pre-modern Japan) or gender-structured (as in the Two-Spirit North American tradition or the Central Asian bacchá practices). Male heterosexuality and homosexuality, while also documented, appear mostly as exceptions, unless we are examining cultures influenced by the A ...

Pederasty - The Greeks.
Main articles: Pederasty in Ancient Greece and Philosophy of Greek pederasty
The ancient Greeks, in the context of the pederastic city-states, were the first to describe, study, systematize, and establish pederasty as an institution. The topic of pederasty was the subject of extensive analysis. Some of the principal dilemmas discussed were:
Which form should pederasty take, chaste or erotic?
Is pederasty right or wrong?
What kind of sexual acts are allowed in this case?
Is pederasty ...

 | | | Reza Abbasi: Encyclopedia II - Safavids - OriginsThe Safavid dynasty had its origins in a long established Sufi order, called the Safaviyeh, which had flourished in Azerbaijan since the early 14th century. Its founder was Sheikh Safi al-Din (1252–1334), after whom it was named.
Sheikh Safi al-Din Abdul Fath Is'haq Ardabili came from Ardabil, a city in today's Iranian Azerbaijan where his shrine still exists. He was a disciple of the famed Sufi Grand Master Sheikh Zahed Gilani (1216–1301) of Lahijan. Spiritual heir to Sheikh Zahed, Safi Al-Din transformed the inherited Zah ...

 | | | Reza Abbasi: Encyclopedia II - Safavids - Decline of the Safavid stateIn addition to fighting its perennial enemies, the Ottomans and Uzbeks, as the 17th century progressed Iran had to contend with the rise of two more neighbors. Russian Muscovy in the previous century had deposed two western Asian khanates of the Golden Horde and expanded its influence into the Caucasus Mountains and Central Asia. In the east, the Mughal dynasty of India had expanded into Afghanistan at t ...

 | | | Reza Abbasi: Encyclopedia II - Pederasty - Modern constructsThe literary pederastic tradition was continued by writers such as André Gide, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Mann, Henry de Montherlant, Eric Satie, Benjamin Britten, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Fernando Vallejo, William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg.
After the middle of the century, the pederastic element of the gay liberation movement was repudiated by the androphile segment of the community, who knew that public acceptance and legitimacy would be impossible goals, if gay men were not trying to distance themselves from pederasts in general. This ha ...
