Retreats: Encyclopedia II - Battle of Kohima - RAF supply

At both Kohima and Imphal, the army was entirely reliant on supply by the Royal Air Force (RAF) until the road from Dimapur was cleared. At Kohima the main problem was dropping of air delivered logistics accurately on to the narrow ridgelines. By the end of the battle the RAF had flown 19,000 tons of supplies and 12,000 men into Kohima and Imphal, and flown out 13,000 casualties and 43,000 non-combatants. The increasing dominance of the RAF by this stage of the Burma Campaign was a major contributor in helping the A ...

Retreats: Encyclopedia II - Battle of Kohima - War memorial

Inscribed on the Commonwealth cemetery war memorial at Kohima, which is near the tennis court, is the well known epitaph. When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Their Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today This is a controversial epitaph for many in India because Indians fought on both sides during the battle. British Indian soldiers fought for the Allies and Indian soldiers of the Indian National Army under the command of Subash Chandra Bose unsuccessfully fought with the Japanese and the Burma National Army led by Ba Maw for the li ...

Retreats: Encyclopedia II - American Federation of Labor - Early years

The AFL was formed in large part because of the dissatisfaction of many trade union leaders with the Knights of Labor, an organization that contained many trade unions and which had played a leading role in some of the largest strikes of the era, but whose leadership had supported several rival unions that had bargained for lower wages and provided strikebreakers during other unions' strikes. The new AFL distinguished itself from the Knights by emphasizing the autonomy of each trade union affiliated with it and limiting membership to workers and organizations made up of workers, ...

Retreats: Encyclopedia II - American Federation of Labor - Conflicts between affiliated unions

From the outset the unions affiliated with the AFL found themselves in conflict when both unions claimed jurisdiction over the same group of workers: both the Brewers and the Teamsters claimed to represent beer truck drivers, both the Machinists and the International Typographical Union represented certain printroom employees, and the Machinists claimed the right to represent some of the employees whom the fledgling union known as the "Carriage, Wagon and Automobile Workers Union" sought to organize — even though it had not made any actual ...

Retreats: Encyclopedia II - Patti Smith - Re-emergence

After the deaths of her husband and brother, Patti's friends Michael Stipe and Allen Ginsberg (whom she had known since her early years in New York) urged her to go back out on the road. She toured briefly with Bob Dylan in December 1995 (chronicled in a book of photographs by Stipe). The next year, she worked with her long-time colleagues to record the haunting Gone Again, featuring tributes to her late husband and Kurt Cobain (and almost certainly reflecting, as well, the deaths of Robert Mapplethorpe, Richard Sohl, and Todd Smith). ...

Retreats: Encyclopedia II - Hutt Valley Campaign - Porirua area

Meanwhile the British had effected a landing on the coast north of Wellington, New Zealand. They could have attacked the Maori from the rear and also cut off the flow of reinforcemnts from the Wanganui area. Instead the British commander, Major Last, wasted time building a strong fortress at Paremata near Porirua. This gave Te Rangihaeata enough time to build his own fortress or Pa at Pauatahanui (at the eastern end of the harbour) from where he could block any further British advances from that direction. They successfully defended this against a B ...

Retreats: Encyclopedia II - Friends of the Western Buddhist Order - Activities

Right from the beginning there was an emphasis on teaching meditation in urban centers. Retreats in the countryside followed, as did lecture series on aspects of Buddhist thought and practice. Residential communities developed out of retreats, when people decided they wanted to live together, and team-based right-livelihood projects were started to fund activities. Eventually, permanent retreat centers were established. Centers were established in other countries including New Zealand and Australia. The FWBO is now actively teaching B ...

Retreats: Encyclopedia II - Rainbow Gathering - Shanti Sena

Within the Rainbow Gathering, security, conflict resolution, and emergency situations are handled by the Shanti Sena ("Peace Keepers"). While some individuals make serving as Shanti Sena a personal priority, everyone present at the gathering is encouraged to be prepared to assume the role of Shanti Sena as the need arises. Although lacking formal organization, experienced volunteers of the active Shanti Sena sometimes employ methods to maximize their effectiveness (these include, but are not limited to the use of Walkie-talkies, CB radio, and horses to improve communication, networking ...

Retreats: Encyclopedia II - Rainbow Gathering - Health

Rainbow Gathering - Water. Sanitation has historically been a major concern at Rainbow Gatherings. Drinking water is filtered at gatherings, both by small pump filters and large gravity-feed devices. Many of the latter have been improvised by members of the Family. Although hands, dishes, and surfaces are now routinely sterilized with bleach-wash solution, as long as novice-built water filtration systems are used at Gatherings, there will continue to be a considerable risk of water and food contamination. ...

Retreats: Encyclopedia II - Rainbow Gathering - The Gatherings

Rainbow Gathering - Gatherings outside the United States. Sizable gatherings are routinely held all over the world, in such places as Europe, Canada, and Israel, though the largest Gatherings, by far, are still the annual national Gatherings in the US. The first European Rainbow gathering was held in 1983 in northern Italy. There has been a European gathering every year since then. The 2005 European gathering was held in eastern Germany and the 2006 Gathering is planned for England. Rainbow gatherings outside of ...
