Rennes: Encyclopedia II - Erlangen - History

Erlangen was first mentioned officially in 1002 under the name of "villa erlangon". In 1361, the village was sold to Emperor Karl IV. Three years later, a city was built close to the village, which in 1374 got its own coining station. In 1398, the municipal rights were confirmed. In 1402, the city was vested to the Hohenzollern as part of the principality of Brandenburg-Kulmbach (from 1603 on Bayreuth), staying under their rule until 1806. Erlangen was the capital of the so-called "Low County" (Unterland) of the principality, encompassing th ...

Rennes: Encyclopedia II - UEFA Cup - History

The first Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, held between 1955 and 1958, was a tournament open to cities that had hosted trade fairs, and not necessarily clubs - cities with more than one club sent representative teams (e.g. London). As time progressed, the competition saw more clubs and fewer representative sides enter, so that by the mid-1960s, it was exclusively for clubs, who usually qualified by being a runner-up in their domestic league. However, a rule that only one cl ...

Rennes: Encyclopedia II - Brittany - History

Human habitation in the area now called Brittany goes back to the late Paleolithic, or Epi-Palaeolithic, period. Megaliths erected in the 5th millennium BC are the best known Neolithic remains. Roman sources record the Armoricani tribes of the Veneti, Osismii, Namneti, Coriosoliti and Riedoni as inhabiting the area in the iron age. In 56 BC the area was conquered by the Romans under Julius Caesar. The Romans called the district Armorica (a Latinisation of a Celtic word meaning "coastal region"), or Gallia Lugdunensis. Th ...

Rennes: Encyclopedia II - Breakcore - Breakcore History

The style began to emerge at the peak of rave in years of 1993–1994. In Berlin and Cologne, the Bass Terror Crew provided a harder version of breakbeat by playing records on 45rpm instead of the intended 33rpm. At the same time, former hardcore techno DJ Tanith started a series of parties with 'breakcore' in bold fat letters on the flyer. As hardcore techno artists were feeling a staleness in the Roland TR-909 and Roland TB-303 drum machine-based sounds, the commercial "childish" elements in Dutch gabber and the overall assaults of ...
