Sendai Miyagi - Festivals. The most famous festival in Sendai is the Sendai Tanabata Festival, which attracts more than 2 million visitors every year and is the largest Tanabata Festival in Japan. The festival is relatively quiet compared to other traditional Japanese festivals, because its main attractions are the intricate Tanabata decorations. The Aoba Matsuri Festival follows more typical Japanese festival traditions, with a mikoshi, floats, a samurai parade, and traditional dancing. Local people burn their New Year decorations and pray for health in the new year during the Dontosai Festival, ...

Rennes: Encyclopedia II - France - Demographics

Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions. Four basic European ethnic stocks - Celtic (Gallic and Breton), Aquitanian (Basque related), Latin, and Germanic (Franks, Visigoths, Burgundians, Vikings) - have blended over the centuries to make up its present population. Besides these "historic" populations, new populations have migrated to France since the 19th century: Belgians, Italians, Spaniards, Portuguese, Poles, Armenians, Jews from Eastern Europe and the Maghreb, Arabs and Berbers from the ...

Rennes: Encyclopedia II - Hundred Years' War 1337-1360 - The Low Countries 1337–1341

While France in the early 14th century had become increasingly centralized, the German states of the Holy Roman Empire had become more decentralized. This meant that the Low Countries were now de facto sovereign, with their princes feeling the enroaching power of the French king. In August 1337, the majority of them signed a treaty of alliance with England. In return for their services, Edward III promised to pay them heavy fees. The neighbouring County of Flanders had difficulties of its own. While a French fief, its large cloth maki ...

Rennes: Encyclopedia II - History of Brittany - Bronze age

The early Bronze age culture is commonly believed to have grown out of Beaker roots, with some Wessex and Unetice influence. In the early Bronze age, rich individual graves are found under barrows, which indicates a complete change of the social structure. The Breton barrows have been divided into two series by Cogné and Guiot, the first dating from 1900-1600 bc, the second to 1600-1400 bc. The barrows of the first series can be up to 50 m in diameter and 6 m high. They are found in Western Brittany, along the coast, the Blavet river and at ...

Rennes: Encyclopedia II - Cork - History

Cork's city charter was granted by King John in 1185. However, Cork has its beginnings in a much earlier monastic settlement, founded by St Finbar in the sixth century. Over the centuries, much of the city was rebuilt, time and again, after numerous fires and attacks by Vikings or Norsemen. The city was at one time fully walled, and several sections and gates remain. The title of Mayor of Cork was established by royal charter in 1318, and the title was changed to Lord Mayor in 1900. In 1825, over 1800 Irish residents departed from Cor ...

Rennes: Encyclopedia II - TGV - Rolling stock

TGV rolling stock differs from other types in that trains consist of semi-permanently coupled multiple units. Bogies are located between the carriages, supporting the carriages on either side, so that each carriage shares its bogies with the two adjacent to it. Locomotives at either end of the trains have their own bogies. This design means that in the case of a derailment, the locomotive derails first and can move separately from the passenger carriages, which are more likely to stay upright and in line with the track. This is unlike normal trains which tend to ...
