Remembering Dreams: Why do people have trouble remembering their dreams?

Dream FAQ Dictionary: Why do people have trouble remembering their dreams?

Why do people have trouble remembering their dreams?

Some people have no difficulty in remembering several dreams nightly, whereas others recall dreams only occasionally or not at all. Nearly everything that happens during sleep— including dreams, the thoughts which occur throughout the night and memories of brief awakenings—is forgotten by morning. There is something about the phenomenon of sleep itself which makes it difficult to remember what has occurred and most dreams are forgotten unless they are written down. Sometimes a dream is suddenly remembered later in the day or on another day, suggesting that the memory is not totally lost but for some reason is very hard to retrieve. Sleep and dreams also are affected by a great variety of drugs and medications, including alcohol. Further, stopping certain medications suddenly may cause nightmares. It is advisable to discuss with your physician the effect of any drugs or medications you are taking.

Remembering Dreams: If I dream every night, why do I not always remember a dream when I wake up?

Dream FAQ Dictionary: If I dream every night, why do I not always remember a dream when I wake up?

If I dream every night, why do I not always remember a dream when I wake up?

Some people seem to have a natural ability to remember their dreams in vivid detail. while others struggle to recall them. Stress, food, medication and stimulants can affect sleep patterns, thus potentially disrupting dream time. You can benefit your recall by setting your intention prior to sleep to remember dreams, and by recording whatever you recall, even fragments, as soon as possible upon awakening.

Remembering Dreams: REM sleep and remembering dreams

REM (rapid eye movement) dreaming sleep usually occurs in ninety minute cycles throughout the night, before the onset of a period of SWS. As the night progresses, these intervals of REM increase in length until finally, the last two hours of slumber contain a high percentage of dreams. Therefore, we are more likely to catch ourselves dreaming towards the end of sleep - between the hours of five and eight in the morning for the average person.

Remembering Dreams: How to Improve Dream Recall

The main barrier to recall and to lucid dreaming (realizing during a dream that one is dreaming) is that waking and dreaming memory aren't connected nearly as well as they could be with greater intention, practice and focus. Making a consistent effort to remember and record your dreams will help your waking mind to ally itself more closely with your dream experience. It's also an excellent way to increase imagination and intuitive capabilities which are both intimately connected with dreams. This alone should provide strong incentive.

Remembering Dreams: Precognitive dreams and premonitions

About four out of ten reported psychic experiences involve some seeming awareness of the future. The term premonition is in general use, and the more clinical word precognition, ('before knowing'), tends to be used by parapsychologists. In descending order of frequency, premonitions come in the form of dreams, waking thoughts, waking imagery and sleep-onset, (hypnagogic), imagery.

Remembering Dreams: To be able to control your dream

'Lucid dreams have changed my life.' These are the words of former sceptic, Mark Creed. As an industrial chemist, 37-year-old Mark specialised in polymers, and like so many scientists, was schooled in the concept of behaviourism and thought that if anecdotal phenomena could not be physically measured, they probably did not exist.

Remembering Dreams: A Different Kind of Memory   What do Indigos Dream?

I have taught many parents how to interpret their children's dreams. Knowing the language of mind gives you an invaluable window into your child's consciousness. When Briana was eleven I asked her parents, who are both dream interpreters, how often she remembered her dreams. Her mother, Teresa, said she remembered about four every week. Teresa also thought Bri had an idea of what her dreams meant. I encouraged her to listen to Briana's ideas and build upon them. When Teresa said sometimes it was like "pulling teeth to get her to express her thoughts," I suggested she encourage Bri to draw or even act out her dreams.

Remembering Dreams: To evoke a specific dream

There is much evidence in existence to support the notion that we all possess the potential to incubate dreams - in other words, conjure up dreams to order. Whether they are romantic encounters, dreams that furnish solutions to problems, or even lucid dreams, with time and effort, they can be evoked. Ancient civilizations were well aware of the potential of dream incubation. The Egyptians, for example, built temples called Serapeums, named after Serapis, the god of dreams. It wasn't unusual for the expectant dreamer to undergo various procedures including cleansing, purging, offering up prayer and so forth, in order to experience the desired dream.

Remembering Dreams: Spiritual dreams - The sign of a new dawning?

Nowadays, my mailbag produces an ever increasing number of dreams which, when analysed, are spiritual or contain elements of spirituality - but why, and do these same dreams provide clues? Much can be learned from dreams, and I believe that they are screaming out at us some answers to these questions. Interestingly, this increase coincides with the general trend pervading modern society of the population apparently splitting into categories, which are becoming ever more entrenched in their own respective beliefs.Perhaps the interactive virtual reality programmes of this life have begun to run their course. Could it be that the increasing numbers of these dreams are just the early signs which do precede a new dawning of an age of spiritual awareness?

Remembering Dreams: How can I improve my dream memory?

Dream FAQ Dictionary: How can I improve my dream memory?

How can I improve my dream memory?

Before you fall asleep, remind yourself that you want to remember your dreams. Keep a paper and pen or tape-recorder by your bedside. As you awaken, try to move as little as possible and try not to think right away about your upcoming day. Write down all of your dreams and images, as they can fade quickly if not recorded. Any distractions will cause the memory of your dream to fade. If you can't remember a full dream, record the last thing that was on your mind before awakening, even if you have only a vague memory of it.

Remembering Dreams: Why is it that I don't remember my dreams?

Dream FAQ Dictionary: Why is it that I don't remember my dreams?

Does everybody dream?

Why is it that I don't remember my dreams?

A: [cf. section 6.4] Everybody dreams. Not only all humans, but infact all mammals are shown to have REM sleep, which is associated withdreams. It is a normal and necessary function of the body (though thedetails, especially the exact reason why it is important, areunknown). So if you think you don't dream you probably just don'tremember.

People vary greatly in how much they remember of their dreams. Theperhaps most important reason why people forget their dreams is thatthey don't care. Western culture does not regard dreams as especiallyimportant, rather it regards getting out of the bed in time as aprevalent survival factor. This is bad in two respects as most dreamsoccur at the end of the sleeping cycle and are often interrupted, andthe necessity of getting up fast and keeping up with the scheduleoccupies peoples' minds and prevents them from thinking about theirdreams in the morning.

Dream recall can be trained. Try to think over all what you havedreamed for some time before getting up and write it down soonafterwards. More info in section 6.

Dream FAQ Dictionary: Are dreams in color?

Are dreams in color?

Most dreams are in color, although people may not be aware of it, either because they have difficulty remembering their dreams or because color is such a natural part of visual experience. People who are very aware of color while awake probably notice color more often in their dreams.

If you are building or repairing a raft in your dream, it is a sign that only through a hard work you will be able to make progress. If you dream of being on a raft, it is very important to remember other elements of the dream such as the condition of water, was it a boisterous river or a sea. If you arrived to the destination of your dream journey, it means that despite of obstacles you will be able to succeed.
