Relations: Encyclopedia II - Foreign relations of Albania - Relations with Neighboring Countries

The Government of Albania is very concerned with developments in the ethnic Albanian province of Kosovo in neighboring Serbia, particularly in the post-Dayton agreement period. While maintaining a responsible and nonprovocative position, the Albanian Government has made it clear that the status and treatment of the Albanian population in Kosovo is a principal national concern. After the fall of the Albanian communist regime in 1991, relations between Greece and Albania became increasingly strained because of widespread allegations of ...

Foreign relations of India - Pakistan. The principal source of contention between India and its western neighbour has been Kashmir, whose Hindu Maharaja, Hari Singh of Dogra chose in 1947 to join India, although a majority of his subjects were Muslim. His decision was hastened by the loss of territory to invading irregulars from Pakistan backed by the Pakistan Army. India maintains that his decision, which was the norm for every other princely state at Independence, and subsequent elections, for over 40 years, in ...

While maintaining diplomatic relations with the PRC, many countries still maintain unofficial 'trade missions' or 'representative offices' in Taipei, to deal with commercial and consular issues. However, owing to political sensitivities, these countries may often forward visa applications to their nearest embassy or consulate, rather than processing them locally. Similarly, the ROC maintains Taipei Economic and Cu ...

Relations: Encyclopedia II - Foreign relations of Tibet - Wartime relations with the United States

The first United States mission to Tibet, in 1942, a reconnaissance mission sent by the OSS to scout out a possible route to southern China during World War II was headed by Captain Ilya Tolstoy, a grandson of the novelist. He was accompanied by Lieutenant Brooke Dolan II who had previously engaged in extensive naturalistic explorations in Tibet. In Lhasa they were granted an audience with the Dalai Lama, then only 7 years old. A letter from Franklin Roosevelt was delivered which was carefully phrased as being addressed to the Dalai Lama as ...

Relations: Encyclopedia II - Foreign relations of Pakistan - Bilateral and Regional Relations

Foreign relations of Pakistan - India. Since partition, relations between Pakistan and India have been characterized by rivalry and suspicion. Although many issues divide the two countries, the most sensitive one since independence has been the status of Kashmir. At the time of partition, the princely state of Kashmir, though ruled by a Hindu Maharajah, had an overwhelmingly Muslim population. When the Maharajah hesitated in acceding to either Pakistan or India in 1947, some of his Muslim subjects, aided b ...

Relations: Encyclopedia II - Japan-United States relations - Early historical relations

Numerous exchanges occurred between Japan and the Northern American continent during Japan's Nanban trade period in the early 17th century, without direct contacts with the colonies which were later to form the United States. Several Spanish ships from Nueva España (Mexico) established contact with Japan, and in 1611, the Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino left for Japan from California to establish formal relations. This embassy was reciprocated in 1613 by the embassy of the samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga, who travelled to Mexico and ...

Relations: Encyclopedia II - Japan-United States relations - Military relations

The 1952 Mutual Security Assistance Pact provided the initial basis for the nation's security relations with the United States. The pact was replaced in 1960 by the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security, which declares that both nations will maintain and develop their capacities to resist armed attack in common and that each recognizes that an armed attack on either one in territories administered by Japan will be considered dangerous to the safety of the other. The Agreed Minutes to the treaty specified that the Japanese government must ...

Relations: Encyclopedia II - Green-Kubo relations - Linear constitutive relations

So regardless of whether transport processes are stimulated thermally or mechanically, in the small field limit it is expected that a flux will be linearly proportional to an applied field. In such a case the flux and the force are said to be conjugate to each other. The relation between a thermodynamic force and its conjugate thermodynamic flux is called a linear constitutive relation, See also:

Relations: Encyclopedia II - Foreign relations of Egypt - US Relations

After the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, Egyptian foreign policy began to shift as a result of the change in Egypt's leadership from President Gamal Abdel-Nasser to Anwar Sadat and the emerging peace process between Egypt and Israel. Sadat realized that reaching a settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict is a precondition for Egyptian development. To achieve this goal, Sadat ventured to enhance US-Egyptian relations to foster a peace process with Israel. See also:

Relations: Encyclopedia II - Franco-Japanese relations - Franco-Japanese relations today

Recently France has been very involved in trade and cultural exchange initiatives with Japan. Some people see this as being a result of French leader Jacques Chirac being a Japanophile. Chirac has visited Japan over 40 times, probably more than any other world leader outside of Japan, and is an expert on the country. France has started the export promotion campaign "Le Japon, c'est possible" and the international liaison personnel exchange program JET. Together they built the Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris. France and Japan have also worked together to improve dire health situations from AI ...

Relations: Encyclopedia II - Foreign relations of Cuba - Cuban-American relations

Because of Cuba's Marxist-Leninist government, the power of the Cuban-American lobby, especially in Florida, and Castro's almost 50 years of rigid one man rule plus his constant support of destabilization relations around the world, the relations between Cuba and the United States have long been very poor. Under President John F. Kennedy, the CIA launched the failed Bay of Pigs invasion in an attempt to topple Fidel Castro. The CIA also embarked on a number of failed baroque assassination attempts. As a result of the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 the United States promised ...

Perhaps mostly because of the restrictions the United States placed on Cuba, Canada has a strong trade relationship with the country; Cuba is also one of Canadians' most popular travel destinations. Relations between Cuba and Canada have been close since before Castro came to power. Following the Cuban revolution, Canada-based banks were the only ones not nationalized. Furthermore Castro has given Canadian companies relaxed access to assets expropriated from US companies [5] (most notably mining interests [6]). Canada is outwardly annoyed by ...

George II of Great Britain died on the toilet on 25 October 1760 from an aortic dissection. According to Horace Walpole's memoirs, King George "rose as usual at six, and drank his chocolate; for all his actions were invariably methodic. A quarter after seven he went into a little closet. His German valet de chambre in waiting heard a noise, and running in, found the King dead on the floor." American film producer Don Simpson was found dead on the toilet on 19 January 1996. Relations: Encyclopedia II - Foreign relations of North Korea - Relations Outside the Peninsula

After 1945, the Soviet Union supplied the economic and military aid that enabled North Korea to mount its invasion of the South in 1950. Soviet aid and influence continued at a high level during the Korean war; as mentioned, the Soviet Union was largely responsible for rebuilding North Korea's economy after the cessation of hostilities. In addition, the assistance of Chinese "volunteers" during the war and the presence of these troops until 1958 gave China some degree of influence in North Korea. In 1961, North Korea concluded formal mutual ...

Relations: Encyclopedia II - Binary relation - Formal definition

A binary relation R is usually defined as an ordered triple (X, Y, G) where X and Y are arbitrary sets (or classes), and G is a subset of the Cartesian product X × Y. The sets X and Y are called the domain and codomain, respectively, of the relation, and G is called its graph. The statement (x,y) ∈ G is read "x is R-related to y", and is denoted by xRy or R(x,y). The latter notation corresponds to viewing R as the ...

There are two definitions of k-place relations that are commonly encountered in mathematics. In order of simplicity, the first of these definitions is as follows: Definition 1. Relations: Encyclopedia II - Social relation - Specific meaning

Although Harvard University has featured a "Department of Social Relations" (in which Talcott Parsons played a prominent role), and although the term "social relations" is frequently used in social sciences, there is in fact no commonly agreed meaning for this concept (see also the entry social). "Social" connotes association, co-operation, mutual dependence and belonging. It could be argued that a social relation is, in the first instance, simply a relation between people, but more specifically a relation between individ ...
