regenerative circuit: Encyclopedia - Regeneration

Regeneration. In biology, regeneration is the ability to recreate lost or damaged tissues, organs and limbs. In plant ecology, regeneration refers to young plants, especially to young trees in forests. In Christian theology, regeneration is the process by which men are given new hearts; that is, the process by which they are "born again", experiencing a "new birth". In electronics, the term means a regenerative circuit (or self-regenerat

regenerative circuit: Encyclopedia II - Regenerative circuit - Description
Regenerative circuits were employed in early radio receivers, offering selectivity and sensitivity far beyond that available from a crystal radio receiver. Regenerative circuits were a great milestone in radio history. The secret to the regenerative radio receiver operation was the carefully controlled positive feedback. This also allowed the receiver to oscillate, allowing CW (Morse code) to be heard as beeps. The regenerative receiver is theoretically as sensitive as any radio can be, however, the adjustments are critical, and must be continuously monitored during listening. If ...

regenerative circuit: Encyclopedia II - Ames Iowa - Important events

Prof. John V. Atanasoff and his graduate student, Clifford Berry, are now credited with the creation of the first true electronic digital computer in the basement of the physics department during the years 1937-1942. The Atanasoff/Berry computer used binary arithmetic circuits, regenerative memory, and logic circuits. These seminal ideas were communicated by Atanasoff to John Mauchly during a visit to Iowa State in the 1940s who then used them in the design of the better-known ENIAC built some years later. Ames has been selected to host the fir ...

regenerative circuit: Encyclopedia - Crystal radio receiver

The crystal radio receiver (also known as a crystal set) was first built circa 1900 by Greenleaf Whittier Pickard, who used crystalline minerals to detect radio signals. Crystal radio receiver - History. Crystal radio receiver - Early years. People first built and used simple and inexpensive crystal radio sets without batteries or electrical power. Even though vacuum tube radios were common following World War I, crystal radios remained popular, especially among be ...

regenerative circuit: Encyclopedia II - Lee De Forest - Middle years

De Forest invented the Audion in 1906 by improving the "diode" vacuum tubes being used at the time. In 1907, he filed a patent for a three-electrode version of the Audion. It was later called the De Forest valve, and is known now as a triode. De Forest's innovation was the insertion of a third electrode, the grid or gate, in between the cathode (filament) (or connected to the filament) and the anode (plate) of the previously invented diode. The resulting triode or three-electrode vacuum tube could be used as an amplifier for electrical signa ...

Crystal radio receiver - Early years. People first built and used simple and inexpensive crystal radio sets without batteries or electrical power. Even though vacuum tube radios were common following World War I, crystal radios remained popular, especially among beginning amateur radio enthusiasts, Boy Scouts and school children, who built crystal radios to learn basic electronics and communication. Early wireless telegraphy used spark gap plasma arc transmitters powered by alternating current generators a ...

regenerative circuit: Encyclopedia II - Lee De Forest - Later years

De Forest sold one of his radio manufacturing firms to RCA in 1931. In 1934, the courts sided with De Forest against Armstrong (although the technical community did not agree with the courts). De Forest won the court battle, but he lost the battle for public opinion. His peers would not take him seriously as an inventor or trust him as a colleague. For De Forest's initially rejected (but later adopted) movie sound method, he was given an Academy Award (Oscar) in 1959/1960 for "his pioneering inventions which brought sound to the motion pictur ...

regenerative circuit: Encyclopedia II - Lee De Forest - Early years

Lee De Forest was born in Iowa to a Congregational minister who hoped that his son would become a minister like himself. His father accepted the position of President of Talladega College (a traditionally Black school) in Alabama where Lee spent most of his youth. Most citizens of the white community resented his father's efforts to educate black students. Nevertheless, Lee De Forest had several ...

regenerative circuit: Encyclopedia II - Crystal radio receiver - Composition

A crystal set is the simplest radio receiver, consisting of a long-wire antenna, a tuner to select the desired radio signal by frequency, and a detector consisting of a diode demodulator usually consisting of a sharp wire or pin pressing against a sensitive point on a galena mineral crystal in a holder. A semiconductive mineral crystal, usually lead sulfide (galena) or cadmium sulfide is fixed inside a brass cup and the radio operator finds the loudest signal by touching the wire, called a "cat's whisker", to various points on ...
