redneck: Encyclopedia II - Rock and the Pop Narcotic - Responses

The book was originally published in a relatively small edition in 1991. In 1994, Carducci revised it and it was republished by Henry Rollins' 2.13.61 press. The initial reaction from much of the mainstream rock press was largely a mixture of indifference and hostility. Carducci's tendency was directly counter to the politically progressive and relatively mainstream attitude of such writers as Dave Marsh or Greil Marcus, neither of whom answered the charges Carducci made against them (of ignoring quality music for political reasons). Only Ro ...

redneck: Encyclopedia II - Cel Damage - Game Engine

The physics engine in Cel Damage is pretty unique. Rather than aiming to simulate realistic real-world physics, it emulates complex cartoon physics. This can be seen for example when a car turns and the entire shape of the car deforms and flexes into the turning direction. Cars and game objects can realistically sliced into pieces, flattened, frozen, shattered, shredded, impaled, lit on fire (and subsequently burn to a crisp and fall into ashes), and more. The Cel Damage physics engine has even attracted the attention of Science News Online. The article “Calculating Cartoons” (Jan. 26, 2002) has a segment about t ...

redneck: Encyclopedia II - Neil Young - Early years

Young was born in Toronto; his father was sportswriter and novelist Scott Young and his mother Rassy Young. Having first played in high school instrumental rock bands in Winnipeg (one of whom, the Squires, had a local hit with "The Sultan") he began to work the folk clubs of Toronto, where he befriended guitarist Stephen Stills. Before fame, Young spent a summer in Thunder Bay, Ontario, playing at local clubs and gigs. In 1966, after an aborted record deal (on the Motown label) with the Rick James-fronted Mynah Birds, Young and ...

redneck: Encyclopedia II - Insult - Overview

An insult may be intentional or accidental. An example of the latter is a well-intended simple explanation, which in fact is superfluous, but is given due to underestimating intelligence or knowledge of the other. Whether speech or behavior is insulting, in practice and sometimes by the terms of local assault statutes, is often a product of the subjective sense of the person insulted. But insults to one person who might not mind the derogatory speech may indirectly insult others. Many states and local municipalities enforce prohibitio ...

redneck: Encyclopedia II - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - Atlanta Constitution

The Atlanta Constitution was first published on June 16, 1868 and was such force that by 1871 it had killed off the only Atlanta paper to survive the American Civil War, the Daily Intelligencer. In 1876 Captain Evan Howell (a former Intelligencer city editor) purchased a controlling interest and became its editor-in-chief. That same year, Joel Chandler Harris began writing the paper and soon invented the character of Uncle Remus, a black storyteller. During the 1880s, Constitution editor Henry W. Grady was a spoke ...

redneck: Encyclopedia II - WASP - The original WASPs

The original WASP élite supposedly dominated the social structure of the United States since the early 1800s. Legacy admission to prep schools and to large universities in Ivy League or small liberal arts colleges such as the "Little Ivies" taught habit and attitude and formed connections which carried over to the influential spheres of finance, culture, and politics. Intermarriage preserved large inherited fortunes. Diversions such as polo and yachting marked those with sufficient wealth and leisure to pursue them. Social registers and soc ...

redneck: Encyclopedia II - Solomon Grundy comics - Earth-Two Version's History

In the late 19th century, a mobster named Cyrus Gold was murdered and his body disposed of in Slaughter Swamp, near Gotham City. Fifty years later, the corpse was reanimated as a huge shambling figure (composed partly of the swamp matter that had accumulated around the body over the decades) with almost no memory of its past life. Gold murdered two escaped criminals who were hiding out in the marsh and stole their clothes. He showed up in a hobo camp and, when asked about his name, one of the few things he could recall was that he was "born on a Monday". One of the men at the camp mentioned the ...

redneck: Encyclopedia II - Bokken - In fiction

The suburito has been popularised in Neal Stephenson's cyberpunk novel Snow Crash as the "redneck katana". It is described as "a one-metre-long piece of heavy rebar with tape wrapped around one end to make a handle. The rebar approximates a katana, but it is very much heavier." In the anime series Outlaw Star the assassin Twilight Sazuka uses a bokken as her weapon of choice. It is stated that the reason for this is in order to prevent detection from metal detectors. In Usagi Yojimbo, the main character and his son, Jotaro were allo ...

redneck: Encyclopedia II - The Jerk film - Plot summary

Navin Johnson (Martin) is the adopted white son of black sharecroppers, who grows to adulthood naïvely unaware of the fact of his adoption, then goes into the world to make his fortune. The characters include a variety of ethnic stereotypes: simple-minded rural blacks, redneck whites, Hispanic con artists, greedy Jews. However, the stereotypes are so blatant that their inclusion in the film could be considered as the filmmakers ...

redneck: Encyclopedia II - The Jim Rome Show - The Clones

The "Clones" are what Rome calls the listeners of the show. Their devotion to Rome along with their use of "smack" makes them different from normal people, but all the same as each other. Unfortunately, callers often only reiterate Rome's exact take on an issue. During the day, Rome saves the recordings of the best calls in the rack (with the term "rack him" or "rack her" after a call, as a signal to the audience that he enjoyed the caller's take). At the end of the show, The Huge Call of the Day (the best call in Rome's opinion) is r ...

Flags of the Confederate States of America - First National Flag The Stars and Bars. The first official flag of the Confederacy was The Stars and Bars, which was flown from March 5, 1861 to May 1863. redneck: Encyclopedia II - Southern rock - 1970s – Peak of popularity

Eventually the spotlight once again turned to bands from the American South. The Allman Brothers Band out of Macon, Georgia made their national debut in 1969 and soon gained a loyal following. Their blues-rock sound on one hand incorporated long jams informed by jazz and classical music, and on the other hand incorporated softer elements of country and folk with a Southern feel. The death of guitarist and leader Duane Allman in 1971 did not prevent them from gaining widespread popular appeal for the next sever ...

redneck: Encyclopedia II - Eddie Murphy - Post SNL career

In 1982, Murphy made his big screen debut in the cop-buddy thriller 48 Hrs. alongside Nick Nolte. The movie was perhaps most notable for a scene involving Murphy (on a bet with Nolte) terrorizing a redneck bar. 48 Hrs. proved to be a smash hit when it was released in the Christmas season of 1982. Murphy and Nolte's comedic and antagonistic chemistry, alongside Murphy's believable performance as a streetwise convict aiding a bitter, aging cop, won over critics and audiences. 48 Hrs. is considered by some to be the origina ...

redneck: Encyclopedia II - Feral subculture - Poor Ferals

Ferals are usually from the lowest stratum of Australian society, lower than the roughly equivalent bogan/bevan/westy. They typically live in cheap houses, usually situated in the outer suburbs where employment is low, or ex-industrial suburbs that are yet to go through urban renewal. People in urban areas do not usually associate them with the rural poor, perhaps due to the traditionally idealist views which surround "the bush" and its rural inhabitants. However, such people are found in many rural areas ...

redneck: Encyclopedia II - Dick Tracy - The comic strip

Dick Tracy - Early years. Chester Gould introduced a raw violence to comic strips, reflecting the violence of 1930s Chicago. Gould also did his best to keep up with the latest in crime fighting techniques and, while Tracy often ends a case in a shootout, he uses forensic science, advanced gadgetry, and plain hard thinking to track the bad guy down. It has been suggested that this comic strip was the first example of the police procedural mystery story. Others have noted that actual mystery plots were relatively r ...
