Universal asynchronous receiver transmitter - Overrun Error. A possible failure of a UART occurs when it cannot process the byte that just came in before the next one arrives. Various UART devices have differing amounts of buffer space to hold received characters. The CPU must service the UART in order to remove characters from the buffer.
