Rain: Encyclopedia - Rain

Rain is a form of precipitation, other forms of which include snow, sleet, hail, and dew. Rain forms when separate drops of water fall to the Earth's surface from clouds. Not all rain reaches the surface, however; some evaporates while falling through dry air. When none of it reaches the ground, it is a precipitation called virga. Rain - Rain in nature. Rain: Encyclopedia II - Rain - Rain in nature
Rain plays a major role in the hydrologic cycle in which moisture from the oceans evaporates, condenses into clouds, precipitates back to earth, and eventually returns to the ocean via streams and rivers to repeat the cycle again. There is also a small amount of water vapor that respires from plants and evaporates to join other water molecules in condensing into clouds. The amount of rainfall is measured using a rain gauge. It is expressed as the depth of water that collects on a flat surface, and can be measured to the nearest 0.25 m ...

Rain: Encyclopedia II - Rain gauge - Standard Rain Gauge

The standard rain gauge consists of a funnel attached to a graduated cylinder that fits into a larger container. In most cases the cylinder is marked in mm and in the picture above will measure up to 25 mm (0.98 in) of rainfall. Each horizontal line on the cylinder is 0.2 mm (0.007 in). The larger container collects any rainfall amounts over 25 mm that flows from a small hole near the top of the cylinder. A metal pipe is attached to the container and can be adjusted to ensure the rain gauge is level. This pipe then fits over a metal rod ...

Rain: The Rain on a Mountain Peak

Hindu Quotes: The Rain on a Mountain Peak

As the rain on a mountain peak runs off

The slopes on all sides, so those who see

Only the seeming multiplicity of life

Run after things on every side.

As pure water poured into pure water

Becomes the very same, so does the Self

Of the illumined man or woman, Nachiketa,

Verily become one with the Godhead.

- Katha Upanishad

Rain: Encyclopedia - Acid rain

Acid rain is defined as any type of precipitation with a pH of below 5.0. Normal rain has a pH which can range between 4.5 and 5.6 with an average value of 5.0. This natural acidity is caused by dissolved carbon dioxide dissociating to form weak carbonic acid. 'Acid rain' is caused by sulfur from volcanic venting or impurities in fossil fuels, and nitrogen from the air, combining with oxygen to form sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. These diffuse into the atmosphere and react with water to form sulfuric and nitric acids which are so ...

Rain: Encyclopedia - Cistern

A cistern (Middle English cisterne, from Latin cisterna, from cista, box, from Greek kistê, basket) is a receptacle for holding liquids, usually water. Rain: Encyclopedia II - Raining animals - Raining animals in culture

Probably the most common reference of this phenomenon in culture is the expression raining cats and dogs that describes copious rains. This sentence appeared first in Jonathan Swift’s work A Complete Collection of Polite and Ingenious Conversation, but its origin is unknown. One explanation suggests that the expression is a distortion of the French word catadoupe. Another theory is that the term originated in the Middle Ages, when dead cats and ...

Rain: Encyclopedia II - Acid rain - History

Acid rain was first reported in Manchester, England, which was an important city during the Industrial Revolution. In 1852, Robert Angus Smith found the relationship between acid rain and atmospheric pollution. The term "acid rain" was used by him in 1872. He observed that acid rain could lead to natural destruction. Though acid rain was discovered in 1852, it wasn't until the 1970s that scientists began widely observing and studying the phenomenon. Public awareness of acid rain in the U.S increased in the 1990s after the New York Tim ...

Rain: Encyclopedia II - Acid rain - Formation

One reaction leading to the production of acid rain is as follows: Evidence for an increase in the levels of acid rain comes from analysing layers of glacial ice. These show a sudden decrease in pH from the start of the industrial revolution of 6 to 4.5 or 4. Other information has been gathered from studying organisms known as diatoms which inhabit ponds. Over the years these die and are deposited in layers of sediment on the bottoms of the ponds. Diatoms thrive in certain pHs, so the numbers of diatoms found in layers of increasing depth give an indicat ...
