Akiba ben Joseph (or Rabbi Akiva, Rebbi Akiva, c. 50-c. 135) was a famous Jewish rabbi of the 2nd century. The Talmud is the only ancient source of knowledge about Rabbi Akiva. According to it he was born to a proselyte named Joseph. He was an am ha'aretz (Hebrew: ignoramus) during his first forty years.
